  • Effect of rib heights is found as significant parameter to enhance convective heat transfer performance under laminar and low turbulent regime. Circular ribs with different ribheight to channel height ratios, e/H = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, are fabricated over the copper substrate respectively in a rectangular duct having 7.5 cross sectional aspect ratio. Only one rib pitch to rib height ratio (P/e = 10) has been chosen for all different height ribs. The result shows that the arithmetic average of turbulence intensity decreases with decreasing roughness height calculated between two ribs under laminar and low turbulent region. It occurs because the area of recirculation and reattachment zone also decreases with decreasing rib height. Optimum thermal enhancement factor is derived by 0.1 rib height to channel height ratio under low turbulent region but 0.15 rib height to channel height ratio gives maximum subjected to laminar flow.

  • In recent days, there was a significant development on the electrical, thermal, mechanical, physical, chemical, magnetic and optical properties of the polyamide enamel, varnish and other insulating materials by the addition of nano fillers to it. Enamel was used in High Voltage Apparatuses used in Medical Electronics as insulation. Insulating materials determine the life time of the electrical apparatuses. The life time of the insulating materials was improved by the addition of nano fillers to it. Hence the life time of the electrical apparatuses was improved by the mixing of nano fillers to the enamel. In this research, the basic dielectric properties of the enamel and enamel mixed with nano composites of silica and alumina were analyzed and compared with each other. The addition of nano fillers has improved the quality factor and capacitance of the enamel. It was also observed that the addition of nano fillers has reduced the dissipation factor and dielectric losses of the enamel. Heat produced by the dielectric losses was also reduced by adding nano fillers to it.

  • A three dimensional numerical study has been applied to predict the turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics for the rectangular channel with different types of baffles. Four different types of the baffles are used. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8 cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55 cm, and the inclination angle of $5^{\circ}$. Reynolds number is varied between 23,000 and 57,000. The SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model is used in the present numerical study. The validity of the numerical results is examined with the experimental data. The numerical results of the flow field depict that the flow patterns around the different baffle type are entirely different and it significantly affects the local heat transfer characteristics. The heat transfer and friction factor depend significantly on the number of baffle holes. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the best values.

  • Results of an experimental program are presented in this paper for the influence of vertical load on the in-plane behavior of masonry infilled steel frames. Five half-scaled single-story, single-bay steel frame specimens were tested under cyclic lateral loading. The specimens included four infilled frames and one bare frame. Two similar specimens as well as the bare frame had moment-resisting steel frames, while the remaining two specimens had pinned steel frames. For each frame type, one specimen was tested under simultaneous vertical and lateral loading, whereas the other was subjected only to lateral loading. The experimental results show that the vertical load changes the cracking patterns and failure modes of the infill panels. It improves dissipated hysteresis energy and equivalent viscous damping. Global responses of specimens, including stiffness and maximum strength, do no change by vertical loading considerably. Regarding the ductility, the presence of vertical load is ignorable in the specimen with moment-resisting frame. However, it increases the ductility of the infilled pinned frame specimen, leading to an enhancement in the m-factor by at least 2.5 times. In summary, it is concluded that the influence of the vertical load on the lateral response of infilled frames can be conservatively ignored.

  • Hydrogen peroxide has a characteristic of being dissociated rapidly into atomic oxygen and water when it is contacted with organic materials, resulting in a decrease in molecular weight of a polymer like carbohydrate. This effect on inulin hydrolysis under ultrasound irradiation was investigated. Maximum effect of hydrogen peroxide appeared at the H2O2 concentration of 2.3%(w/v) under the range of $50∼60^{\circ}C$ and 0.1∼0.3%(w/w) HCl. Compared to control reactions, the promotion effect reached 9∼43%. The activation energy, 26kca1/mo1, of inulin hydrolysis with H2O2 addition was similar to that without H2O2 addition, 25kca1/mo1. This implies that the rate enhancement of inulin hydrolysis with H2O2 addition is due to the increase of frequency factor.

  • The enhancement of service life of damaged or cracked structures is currently major issue to the researchers and engineers. In order to improve the life of cracked aging aircraft structures, the repair technique which uses adhesively bonded boron/epoxy composite patches is being widely considered as a cost-effective and reliable method. This paper is to study the performance of the bonded composite patch repair of a plate containing an inclined central through-crack. A 3-dimensional finite element method having three layers to the cracked plate, composite patch and adhesive layer, is used to compute the stress intensity factor. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors near the crack-tip are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including composite patch thickness, and material properties of the composite patch and thickness of the adhesive layer, materials of patch etc., and the crack length, Finally, The problem of how to optimize the patch geometric configurations has been discussed.

  • Usually, a window tends to have a lower thermal performance, than that of an ordinary wall. This study analyzes the enhancement of thermal performance of a window, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter is installed. The analyses were conducted at the laboratory, and with a full-scale mockup house, and the U-factor and heating load were examined. The laboratory results show that the U-factor increased by approximately 28%, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter was installed. The temperature difference was about $5^{\circ}C$, and this shows that the Thermal Insulation Shutter enhances the thermal performance of the window, when installed. The mockup house was used to calculate the heating load; the heating load was reduced by more than 41%, and shows that the installation of a Thermal Insulation Shutter is an effective way to reduce heating energy consumption.

  • This paper empirically studies the effect of public procurement on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Republic of Korea using firm-level data. Public procurement, the purchase of goods and services from private firms by the public sector, is regarded as an important policy measure for providing support to firms, particularly SMEs. This study uses establishment-level panel data of the mining and manufacturing sectors from the Korean National Bureau of Statistics (Statistics Korea) and procurement history from the Korean Public Procurement Service to empirically estimate the effects of public procurement on firms' productivity (total factor productivity) and survivability. Using a propensity score matching estimation method, we find that participating firms showed higher productivity than non-participating ones in the control group only for the year of participation, that is, 2009. After two years, in 2011, they exhibited significantly lower productivity. In contrast, establishments that participated in public procurement for SMEs in 2009 were more likely to survive than those that did not do so in 2011. These results can be interpreted as the negative consequences of government intervention. The market's efficiency enhancement is hindered if underserving companies survive owing to government intervention but fail to improve efficiency.
