  • This study evaluated the recycling potential of in-site waste soil as pile back filling material (PBFM). We performed experiments to check workability, segregation resistance, bond strength, direct shear stress test, and dynamic load test using in-site waste soil in coastal areas. We found that PBFM showed better performance than general cement paste in terms of workability, segregation resistance, and bond strength. On the other hand, the structural performance of PBFM was slightly lower than that of general cement paste due to the skin friction force of pile by Pile Driving Analyzer and direct shear stress. However, because this type of performance degradation in terms of structure can be improved through the use of piles with larger diameter or by changing the type of pile, considering the economics and environment, we considered that recycling of PBFM has sufficient value.

  • Work Guideline of Construction Quality Management was revised in July 2017, and it has changed the perception of scaffolding in South Korea. The on site investigation and survey was performed on manufacturers, leasing companies, and quality inspection agencies regarding the compliance with the guideline for the scaffolding and the related components brought to the site. Moreover, the related guidelines and identified unsatisfactory quality management items were analyzed by each subject. As a result, the major factors that cause the problems were reasonably deducted. The related regulations to prohibit the delivery of faulty scaffolding components to the construction site in order to secure the safety of the temporary structure was suggested.

  • In this study, the composition and morphology of deposited dust particles with size ranging from a few to tens ㎛ were investigated using SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer). Then deposited dust particles were classified into 8 groups: quartz, aluminosilicates, ca-rich, Fe/Ti oxide, carbon-rich, industrial particle, Fe-rich, and biogenic particle. The sources of deposited dust were high in the order of aluminosilicates 41% > biogenic 18% > Fe-rich 11% > quartz and C-rich 8% > industrial 7% > Fe/Ti oxide 5% > Ca-rich 1%. In particular, the ratio of biogenic particles was relatively high due to influence of pollen. The ratio of carbon-rich was 11% at YM site, 10% at MD site, and 4% at MO site, and the site close to the large emission source was high.

  • Recently, research and development to revitalize smart construction are being actively carried out. Accordingly, 3D mapping technology that digitizes construction site is drawing attention. To create a 3D digital map for construction site a point cloud generation method based on LiDAR(Light detection and ranging) using MMS(Mobile mapping system) is mainly used. The purpose of this study is to analyze the accuracy of MMS LiDAR-based point cloud data. As a result, accuracy of MMS point cloud data was analyzed as dx = 0.048m, dy = 0.018m, dz = 0.045m on average. In future studies, accuracy comparison of point cloud data produced via UAV(Unmanned aerial vegicle) photogrammetry and MMS LiDAR should be studied.

  • 4D simulation integrates the 3 dimensional model of a building with the construction schedule, and it leads to the possibility of virtually checking the construction process and the building itself in advance. However, the existing problem of 4D simulation is the difference between the demands of architects, engineers, and construction site workers in 4D simulation. This study suggests the possible way to enhance the availability of 4D simulation, considering more the practical demands from the construction site. In order to conduct this study, we build a 3D BIM model of a business-residential complex and link the model with the pre-defined construction schedule in order to make a 4D simulation. This study concludes with the optimized 4D simulation methodology based on BIM model considering the demands in perspective of the construction site. It would contribute to the harmonic collaboration among architects, engineers, and labors in the construction site when using 4D simulation based on BIM model.

  • On construction sites, it is important to monitor the performance of construction equipment and workers to achieve successful construction project management; especially, vision-based detection methods have advantages for the real-time site data collection for safety and productivity analyses. Although many researchers developed vision-based detection methods with acceptable performance, there are still limitations to be addressed: 1) sensitiveness to the shape and appearance changes of moving objects in difference working postures, and 2) high computation time. To deal with the limitations, this paper proposes a detection algorithm of construction equipment based on Integral Channel Features. For validation, 16,850 frames of video streams were recorded and analyzed. The results showed that the proposed method worked in high performance in terms of accuracy and processing time. In conclusion, the developed method can help to understand useful site information including working pattern, working time and input manpower analyses.

  • A construction temporary work is main process and importance trade section. A technology system of construction temporary has very low availability of field works and needs improvements in Korea as construction site has a quick response about new requirements. This study reviews literature researches and can verify that changes to a comprehensive technology system for construction site. In addition, it suggests a breakdown structure of new standards for temporary construction technology based on views of construction site managers. Meanwhile, temporary construction technology in Korea has changed with a specification of construction temporary work which had been revised in 2014. However, the revision is merely dividing the design and building off of construction temporary technology. It is lacking in many ways to change this in a new standard system for temporary construction technology. Henceforth, it needs to develop a standard system for temporary construction technology and a professional system that is appropriate for different purposes by detail trade sections.

  • Quality management work at construction sites requires a lot of time and effort in Excel-based document preparation and approval in addition to conducting quality tests. Because Excel-based quality management tasks are divided into quality test report printing and test progress, test report documentation, test report printout and approval, and management ledger preparation. This divided processes increase work time and reduce efficiency. Accordingly, a cloud-based construction site quality management system (Q-BOX) was developed to improve the productivity of quality management work. The purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of Q-BOX, which is in the early stages of construction site introduction.

  • This paper presents a computational method that identifies an exact set of optimal overlap rates between critical activities to meet job site specific needs by using rework cost-slope. The procedures to compute the exact solution are provided in peudocode algorithm. The method is coded into Exact Concurrent Construction Scheduling system that allows practitioners to make more informed decision in accordance with the site-specific condition involved in the overlapping of critical activities. Test cases verify the validity of the computational method and the usability of the system.
