Effect of Elementary STEAM Program Emphasizing Engineering Design Process (공학적 설계 과정을 강조한 초등용 STEAM 프로그램의 효과)

  • In this study, a STEAM program emphasizing the engineering design process was developed and applied to investigate its effects on the creative engineering problem-solving proficiency and self-directed learning ability of elementary school students. In addition, the study compared and analyzed differences according to gender. The program was conducted across five sessions targeting 141 students in the fourth grade in an elementary school in the Gyeongin area. The study measured the creative engineering problem-solving disposition and self-directed learning ability of the students before and after the STEAM program. It also administered satisfaction and perception tests. The result confirmed that the STEAM program that emphasizes the engineering design process is effective in improving the creative engineering problem-solving propensity and self-directed learning ability of elementary school students, particularly female ones. Analyzing differences in changes based on gender, the study pinpointed significant improvements among female students in all factors except for the subfactor communication and collaboration within tendencies toward creative engineering problem-solving. For male students, the study observed significant effects in the factors engineering design and communication and collaboration. Lastly, the study discussed the educational implications of the findings.

  • An algorithm for solving the cardinality constrained linear programming knapsack problem is presented. The algorithm has a convenient structure for a branch-and-bound approach to the integer version, especially to the 0-1 collapsing knapsack problem. A numerical example is given.

A Case Study on Gifted Education in Mathematics

  • The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over.   • A sweep-based heuristic using common area is developed for multi-vehicle VRPs under time various and unsymmetric forward and backward vehicle moving speed. One depot and 2 delivery vehicle are assumed in this research to make the problem solving strategy simple. A common area is held to make adjustment of possible unbalance of between two vehicle delivery completion times. The 4 time zone heuristic is used to solve for efficient delivery route for each vehicle. The current size of common area needs to be studied for better results, but the suggested problem solving procedures can be expanded for any number of vehicles.

  • This paper introduces TRIZ. TRIZ is the theory of inventive problem solving which haws started by G.Altschuler since 1946, Russia. TRIZ is applicable for not only mechanical engineering, but also science, economic and pedagogy fields. Characteristics of some kind of softwares for TRIZ method are briefly reviewed Especially Catia with IMC TechOptimizer is studied in detail and it is expected to be applicable well for the Ocean Engineering fields, if applicably applied for IM-Principles, IM-Predictions and IM-Effects, even though it will need much efforts and time to study. As an application example of TRIZ, Self-expandable anchor which is pending for patent is presented briefly.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore applicability of teaching-learning methods for creative problem solving which was designed to improve students' creative thinking and problem solving competencies. Methodology is literature review and focus group interview. The students who attended the elective course 'creative women and science' was participated during 15 weeks. Through this teaching-learning methods, students were fully aware of learning methods for creative problem solving, sought for problems, clarified problems, found solutions through discussions, and continuously examined ideas by receiving feedbacks. They could deduce creative new solutions to solve encountered problems regarding team dynamics and apply it in real situation. As the results of applying teaching-learning methods for creative problem solving to a course in University, it had the advantages of enhancing students' competencies in analyzing problems and applying derived solutions in actual field.

  • The aim of this paper is to explore various ways to utilize critical thinking in engineering education. To this end, this paper, in the light of the relationship between critical thinking and the program learning performance of ABEEK, reviews engineering design education, engineering ethics education, and engineering communication education, which are major areas where critical thinking can be utilized in engineering education. As a result, it was confirmed that critical thinking skills, especially the elements and criteria of critical thinking, can contribute to the creative problem-solving process in engineering design education, the rational decision-making process in engineering ethics education, and the effective communication process in engineering communication education.

  • With the 4th Industrial Revolution, educational change is required to cultivate the ability to adapt in the rapidly changing future. Accordingly, the importance of nurturing convergent talents to create new values using the humanities imagination, science and technology creativity, and engineering problem solving ability has emerged. The purpose of this study is to develop STEAM education program with Daedeok R&D Zone and KAIST resources for middle school and high school level. With this program, we investigated the effectivenss of STEAM education on creative problem solving ability, self-efficacy and the perception of STEAM education with pre-test and poste-test model. For this study, 91 students(46 middle school, 45 high school) participated in STEAM education program. As a result student participated in the STEAM program improved the creative problem-solving ability and students' interest in math and science. Also, students perceived STEAM program provided benefits of science-related career information. The suggestions were discussed based on the results.

  • Enhanced methodologies for process diagnosis and abnormal situation management have been developed for the last two decades. However, there is no single method that always shows better performance over all kinds of diagnostic problems. In this paper, a framework of message-passing, cooperative, intelligent diagnostic agents is presented for improved on-line fault diagnosis through cooperative problem solving of different expertise. A group of diagnostic agents in charge of different process functional perform local diagnoses in parallel; exchange related information with other diagnostic agents; and cooperatively solve the global diagnostic problem of the whole process plant or business units just like human experts would do. For their better understanding, sharing and exchanging of process knowledge and information, we also suggest a way of remodeling processes and protocols, taking into account semantic abstracts of process information and data. The benefits of the suggested multi-agents-based approach are demonstrated by the implementations for solving the diagnostic problems of various chemical processes.
