The Effects of Base Oil Quality on the Performance of GF-3 Engine Oil

  • The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-3 passenger car engine oil specification has been introduced commercially in July 2001. The new specification oil provides superior performance in terms of fuel economy, control of high temperature deposits, and oil consumption. These enhanced performances of GF-3 engine oil need high quality base oil as well as a better additive system. In this paper, the effect of base oil on various performances of ILSAC GF-3 engine oil was investigated. From the GF-3 sequence engine tests, Group III base oil shows better performance in fuel economy retention, oxidation and varnish control than combination of group III and group II or group III and group 1.

오일필터 일체형 엔진오일퇴화감지센서 시작품 개발 I (The Prototype Development of an Engine Oil Deterioration Sensor Installed Inside an Oil Filter)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the proto type sensor installed inside an oil filter in order to detect oil deterioration level. The sensor is made up with two concentric cylinders with constant gap in between and a filter element inside the central area. The size will be designed as similar as real oil filters. The sensor will be tested on a test rig, which is circulating engine oil, with the same size of an oil filter adapting housing as real engines'. It will be measured the capacitance of a sample engine oil, then be able to be gotten the dielectric constant. The changes in the dielectric constant could be correlated with the engine oil deterioration level if the sensor development would be completed. In this paper, it will be shown the test results carrying out under variable temperature conditions at atmosphere pressure.

  • This paper presents the test results of small dipstick-gage-type engine-oil-deterioration-detection sensor. The measured sensor signal characteristics for the capacitance and temperature are analyzed. The engine oil deterioration condition correlates with the electrical property of the dielectric constant that comprised with physical properties such as TAN (Total Acid Number), TBN (Total Base Number) and viscosity. Several problems encontered during the test of the sensor system are improved. The results of vehicle tests show that the capacitance signal is stable after the engine stops. Therefore, the sensor should start measuring the parameters for monitoring the engine oil condition after the engine stops. The engine is considered to be in a stopped state if the difference between the maximum and minimum values of the oil capacitance measured every 1 min is below 0.02 pF. The key test results in this paper will help in the development of an engine oil change warning algorithm.

  • Engine oil of the vehicle is very important to reduce friction and wear of the moving parts as long as possible without deterioration. As the technique of engine design and manufacturing improves, the performance of engine was increased greatly with the improvement of the quality of engine oil. All the additives and formulations skill of engine oil produced in our country are imported from foreign country. So it is necessary to study the basic knowledge of the mechanism of friction and wear of engine oil for the development of our own formula and additives. From this research, the basic mechanism of tribology and the change of oil properties were studied with a home made oil and two foreign oils by bench and engine test and laboratory works.

초고주파 구형도파로를 이용한 엔진 오일의 유전율 측정 (Microwave Rectangular Waveguide Measurement of the Engine Oil Dielectric Constant)

  • The rectangular waveguide technique can be used to measure the complex permittivity of dielectric material of various thickness and cross section. This paper presents the analysis system of engine oil permittivity at which deterioration of engine oil is measured at the X-band(8-12.5 GHz). The middle of the rectangular waveguide has engine oil case and is connected with VNA(Vector Network Analyzer) for the measurement of the transmission$(S_{21})$ and reflection$(S_11)$ and then the permittivity is extracted. The deterioration of engine oil is proved by the comparison with both the extracted data and reference data. As the additional research, This paper suggest that an accurate permittivity is considered by not only the wave guide length but the air gap between oil case and the waveguide.

  • A Parametric study based on a computer analysis of the lubrication system of a four-cylinder gasoline engine is illustrated. Through the parametric study, the effects of various aeration levels on the change of oil flow rate and pressure are investigated. Also, at high oil temperature and low engine speed, the effect of oil aeration level on oil flow characteristics in lubrication system is investigated. The illustrated results may give to designers the guide lines of oil aeration level for the safe design of engine lubrication systems in terms of minimum pressure at crank oil bore.

엔진오일 내 연료성분 정량분석 (Quantitative Analysis of Fuel in Engine Oil)

  • 연료가 혼합된 엔진오일은 차량의 문제(엔진마모, 화재, 급발진 등)를 초래하여, 운전자의 안전을 위협할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 연료가 혼합된 엔진오일의 다양한 성능을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 연료혼합 엔진오일은 인화점, 유동점, 밀도, 동점도, 저온 겉보기점도가 낮아졌다. 사구법 내마모성능시험에서는 연료가 혼합된 엔진오일이 열악한 윤활성으로 마모흔(wear scar)이 증가하였다. 또한 우리 연구팀은 ASTM D2887 방법을 적용한 고온모사증류시험(SIMDIST, simulated distillation)을 통해 엔진오일 내 연료성분을 분석하였다. SIMDIST 분석결과 연료는 엔진오일보다 짧은 머무름시간을 보였으며, 엔진오일 내 연료성분의 정량분석이 가능하였다. 이 SIMDIST 분석방법을 통해 기존 많은 분석장비, 시료양, 분석시간이 필요한 물성분석법을 대신하여 엔진오일 내 연료 오염여부 및 정도를 효과적으로 판단할 수 있을 것이다.

  • In development process of engine lubrication system, many failure cases are related with aeration problem. Therefore, it is very important to clarify the aeration in the engine oil circuit system. As of today, many factors have been introduced as the major cause in the engine oil aeration. However, still many test data related with those are required to clearly understand it. In this paper the aeration measurement system and calculation method are introduced. And also using this system we measured engine oil aeration for various cases. From these results some conclusions are reduced.

LPG엔진에서의 윤활유 열화 (The Deterioration of Lubricants in LPG Engine)

  • Recently, the population of vehicles using LPG as fuel has been increasing due to relatively low fuel price and low tax. Although gasoline engine oils we usually used to lubricate LPG engines, some troubles such as oil thickening and TBN depletion were found in them under severe operating condition. In order to investigate the deterioration mechanism of lubricants in LPG engine, field trials were performed. The results from the field trials showed that the deterioration of oils in LPG engine is different from that in normal gasoline engine. LPG engine oil was deteriorated mainly through oxidation and nitration at high temperature rather than contamination of fuel combustion products.
