In a previous report, the properties of vegetable oils as diesel fuel substitutes were investigated and the basic load performance of a diesel engine was examined using vegetable oil. The results show that despite of the long term chain hydrocarbon structure and large droplet size due to high viscosity, vegetable oils have good basic performance and exhaust emissions, however they cause serious problems as carbon deposit buildup, they have poor durability, and also poor thermal efficiency. In this paper, the startability and engine durability with long term operation was tested by physical methods for reducing viscosity when vegetable oil was used as compared against diesel fuel. The results obtained in this investigation may be stated as follows; (1) There is no problem in startability when vegetable oil was used as diesel fuel substitutes as far as fuel temperature is higher than 30.deg. C (2) The carbon deposits were most extensive at lower loads and lower engine speeds, and deposit buildup more heavily on the cooler parts of the combustion chamber wall. (3) Blends with 25% diesel fuel and 20v-% ethanol are effective in reducing the carbon deposit buildups. (4) Significant improvement in carbon deposit and piston ring stick can be obtained by heating fuel(200.deg.).
This study deals with the numerical analysis for hood development to improve the cooling effect of the engine related components in engine room. Reducing the component temperature in engine room caused by a sudden temperature deviation can minimize the durability degradation of components. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis for the development of the hood in engine room was carried out in four parts such as generator, battery, ECU and power steel oil which are relatively easy to control temperature among the main components in engine room. In order to verify the numerical analysis, experiments were conducted under the same conditions as those assumed in the numerical analysis.

The operating torque and tribological characteristics of a cam/tappet system of an I.C. engine have an important effect on the engine efficiency. More power is lost for higher operation torque which is affected by the friction of a cam/tappet system. In this work experimental investigation of the torque behavior of a cam/tappet system was conducted to get tribological characteristics. Specifically, the torque was measured with respect to oil temperature and camshaft speed. The torque decreased with increasing camshaft speed because of decreasing friction coefficient but was hardly affected by the oil temperature. Also, the torque was the largest near the cam nose region.

Water soluble oil was obtained by pyrolysis of biomass. The characteristics of emulsified fuel by mixing water soluble oil and MDO(marine diesel oil) and engine emissions were studied with engine dynamometer. Saw dust was used as biomass. Water soluble oil was obtained by condensing of water and carbon content with pyrolysis of saw dust at $500^{\circ}C$. Emulsion fuel was obtained by emulsifying MDO and water soluble oil by the water soluble oil mixing ratio of 10 to 20% of MDO. Exhaust gas detection was performed with engine dynamometer. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the emulsion fuel, emulsion fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The heat produced from water vapour reduce the temperature of internal combustion chamber and it caused to inhibition of NOx production. It can be verified by the lower exhaust temperature of each ND-13 mode using emulsion fuel than that of MDO fuel. The NOx and smoke concentration were reduced by increasing water soluble oil content in the emulsion fuel. The power also decreased according to the increment of water soluble oil content of emulsion fuel because emulsion fuel has low calorific value due to high water content than MDO. As a result of ND-13 mode test with 20% bio oil content, it was achieved 25% reduction in NOx production, 60% reduction in smoke density, and 15% reduction in power loss.

As the performance of engines improves, the temperature of engines is increasing, resulting in a high piston temperature. An excessively high piston temperature may result in torque drop or engine failure. An oil jet is used to reduce the piston temperature. In this study, to monitor the effect of oil jet, a templug was used to measure the piston temperature. A templug is a kind of sensor and the hardness of the templug changes according to the piston temperature. Using a templug, the maximum temperature of the piston was measured with and without an oil jet. The piston temperature was lowered using the oil jet. The highest temperature region changed from the center crown to the front/rear area. In addition, the temperature difference between the highest and lowest regions became smaller.

In order to test the applicability of bunker-A in a diesel engine for small-fishing boat, the investigation of the engine performance and the exhaust emission was performed under various conditions of fuel property, intake air pressure and fuel temperature. It was also performed based on IMO NOx Technical code. At high load, the energy consumption rate of bunker-A was lower than that of diesel oil, and the characteristics of exhaust emission of bunker-A were similar to those, and NOx emission rates of both fuels satisfied the IMO NOx emission regulation limits. The energy consumption rate and characteristics of exhaust emission were improved as the intake air pressure was increased, but these were not improved remarkably as the temperature of bunker-A was heated. However, at low load the energy consumption rate, CO emission rate and HC emission rate of bunker-A were higher than those of diesel oil, but NOx emission rates of the fuels were about the same. In addition, at low load the energy consumption rate and CO emission rate of bunker-A were increased as the intake air pressure and the temperature were higher than normal conditions. Accordingly, it is thought that the use of bunker-A in a kind of test engine is possible at high load. On the other hand, it is thought that more research is needed to improve the combustion efficiency under low temperature and low load condition.
An advanced liquid lubricants for heat engines has been developed and tested successfully in a prototype engine. The lubricant possesses superior oxidation stability and high temperature stability and is capable of surviving for a minimum of three minutes at 425$^{\circ}$C (800$^{\circ}$C) at the ring zone and maintains stability at an oil sump temperature of 171$^{\circ}$C. The lubricant has been evaluated by the Cummins Engine Co. Out of a field of several dozens of lubricant, six lubricant was selected for a prototype 200 hours endurance testing. The NIST lubricant was one of the two lubricants that successfully finished the endurance testing. This paper describes the key lubricant considerations including oxidation and thermal stability, volatility, deposit control. The engine test conditions and the results will be presented.

It is very important to determine the performance and operating envelope of engine for aircraft's flight. The basic performance is provided by manufacturer, but installed engine's operating envelop is only determined by flight test. First, this study was measured cylinder head temperature(CHT), exhaust gas temperature(EGT) and oil temperature. At pre-determined altitude and power rate, these temperatures were measured by change of mixture ratio and mixture ratio condition for economic operation and max. power were found. And secondly, with the measured temperatures, possible positions of mixture lever were determined by flight test for stable flight Chang-91 and Lycoming IO-360-A series four cylinders engine with 200 hp was used for this study.

Die casting process of Mg alloys for high temperature applications was studied to produce an engine oil pan. The aim of this paper is to evaluate die casting processes of the Aluminium oil pan and in parallel to apply new Mg alloy for die casting the oil pan. Temperature distributions of the die and flow pattern of the alloys in cavity were simulated to diecast a new Mg alloy by the flow simulation software. Dies have to be modified according to material characteristics because melting temperature and heat capacity are different. We changed the shape and position of runner, gate, vent hole and overflow by the simulation results. After several trial and error, oil pans of AE44 and MRI153M Mg alloys are produced successfully without defect. Sleeve filling ratio, cavity filling time and shot speed of die casting machine are important parameter to minimize the defect for die casting Magnesium alloy.

Methanol was examined as supplemental fuel for open chamber type and pre-combustion chamber type diesel engine. Pre-determined quantities of diesel oil were injected as ordinary diesel engines and methanol was added at inlet pipe using venturi, nozzel and and float chamber for the rest of the charge. In this mode of operation, addition of methanol reduced inlet and exhaust temperature. Inlet air quantities were essentially unchanged in spite of lower inlet temperature. Exhaust smoke was significantly reduced At light load when both diesel oil and methanol were introduced with small quantities, specific heat consumption was considerably increased. However, with the increase of the quantity of methanol or diesel oil, specific heat consumption was improved. With sufficient quantities of diesel oil enough to produce the power above 3/4 load, addition of methanol showed better thermal economy.
