A technology that newly attract attention in the area of energy-related study is the energy harvesting(or scavenging) technology. In this paper, the performance of power generation for the energy harvesting block with a combination of piezoelectric technology and electromagnetic technology among various energy harvesting technologies was investigated. The goal of this study is to evaluate on the applicability of our developed energy harvesting block into the field of urban & housing. First, we evaluated the performance of power generation for the multi-layer energy harvester at laboratory scale. Second, we described the features of our developed prototype module that includes amplification technologies to improve power density per module and evaluated the performance of power generation for the energy harvesting block in a variety of ways. From the test results, the developed product increased the performance of power generation up to 255% or 505% compared to the existing product and its superiority were shown. Finally, we suggested the direction for the improvement of the energy harvesting block module.
In this paper, an energy harvesting and profiling system is designed for smart video devices in internet of things environments without dedicated power source. The energy harvesting module provides the harvested energy from solar panel to the smart video device. The energy profiling module measures the battery outflow current and the battery voltage of the smart video device and the consumed energy of processes, and calculate the harvested energy from the energy harvesting module to the smart video device and the total energy consumption of the smart video device. The accuracy of the harvested energy measured by the device energy profiling module is validated by comparing with the calculated energy using the regional solar radiation provided by Korea Meteorological Administration. Energy harvesting data from the designed energy harvesting and profiling system can be used to design the perpetual operation of smart video devices or Internet of Things sensors.

This paper investigated the method for the output of power management IC (PMIC) for BLE beacon with energy harvesting device to be maintained constantly. The capacitor was used to store the energy supplied from energy harvesting device such as solar module and the capacitance was estimated to the optimum value according to the interval for the BLE beacon to send advertising signal.
This paper reports a novel mobile-type wave energy harvesting system. The proposed system adopts a wave glider's propulsion mechanism. A wave glider's blades were mounted on a circular layout and generated a rotational motion. Combining the wave converting system with the wave glider, a mobile floating-type robotic buoy system was developed. It enabled the relocation of the buoy position, as well as station-keeping for long term operation. It had a small size and could efficiently harvest wave energy. A feasibility study and modeling were carried out, and a prototype system was constructed. Various tank tests were performed to optimize the proposed wave energy harvesting system.

Energy harvesting sensor networks have the ability to collect energy from the environment to overcome the power limitations of traditional sensor networks. The sensor network, which has a limited transmission range, delivers data to the destination node through a multi-hop method. The routing protocol should consider the power situation of nodes, which is determined by the residual power and energy harvesting rate. At this time, if only considering the magnitude of the power, power imbalance can occur among nodes and it can induce instantaneous power shortages and reduction of network lifetime. In this paper, we designed a routing protocol that considers the balance of power as well as the residual power and energy harvesting rate.
Recent research on energy harvesting wireless sensor networks focuses on the development of techniques to solve the limited energy resource problem and to extend the whole network life efficiently. Energy harvesting technology can increase the lifetime of a network, but data transmission becomes unavailable when it harvests energy from radio frequency, resulting longer network delay with respect to the increased time in energy harvesting. Therefore, building energy harvesting wireless sensor network should consider the possible network delay as well as the network lifetime problem. In this paper, we propose a new MAC protocol that minimizes end-to-end network delay by adjusting the data transmission time for a packet based on estimating the energy for data transmission along with the amount of traffic flowing into the network and harvested energy. For this goal, it engineers an energy management mechanism that adjusts the sleep time of the network by measuring energy harvesting time. In addition, with simulation results it shows that the proposed MAC protocol improves the performance in terms of energy consumption and end-to-end delay, compared to the existing MAC protocols.
Powering wireless sensors with energy harvested from the environment is coming of age due to the increasing power densities of both storage and harvesting devices and the electronics performing energy efficient energy conversion. In order to maximize the functionality of the wireless sensor network, minimize missing packets, minimize latency and prevent the waste of energy, problems like congestion and inefficient energy usage must be addressed. Many sleep-awake protocols and efficient message priority techniques have been developed to properly manage the energy of the nodes and to minimize congestion. For a WSN that is operating in a strictly energy constrained environment, an energy-efficient transmission strategy is necessary. In this paper, we present a novel transmission priority decision scheme for a heterogeneous body sensor network composed of normal nodes and an energy harvesting node that acts as a cluster head. The energy harvesting node's decision whether or not to clear a normal node for sending is based on a set of metrics which includes the energy harvesting node's remaining energy, the total harvested energy, the type of message in a normal node's queue and finally, the implementation context of the wireless sensor network.
Wearable electronic devices with batteries must be lightweight, flexible and highly durable. Most importantly, the battery should be able to self-generate to operate the devices without having to be too frequently charged externally. An eco-friendly energy harvesting technology from various sources, such as solar energy, electromagnetic energy and wind energy, has been developed for a self-charging flexible battery. Although the energy harvesting from such sources are often unstable according to the surrounding environment, the energy harvesting from body movements and vibrations has been less affected by the surrounding environment. In this regard, flexible piezoelectric modules are the most attractive solution for this issue, because they convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and harvest energy from the human body motions. Among the various flexible piezoelectric modules, piezoelectric nanofibers have advantages when used as an energy harvester in wearable devices, due to their simple manufacturing process with good applicability to polymers and ceramics. This review focused on diverse flexible piezoelectric nanofibers and discusses their applications as various energy harvesting systems.

Energy harvesting is a recent technology involving the harvest and utilization of extremely small surrounding energy. Energy harvesting research is conducted in various fields. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are energy harvesting technologies that use static electricity generated by physical movement or friction. Although TENGs generate output power in microwatt levels, they experience high internal impedance compared with other energy harvesting generators, thereby making the continuous transfer of electric power to loads difficult. This study proposes a power management system for TENGs that consists of three stages, that is, an AC/DC rectifier, an impedance coupler switch with a capacitor bank, and a DC/DC converter. In addition, the selection method of the AC/DC rectifier and DC/DC converter is proposed to maximize the amount of power transferred from energy harvesting areas. Furthermore, the impedance coupler switch and capacitor bank are discussed in detail. The validity and performance of the proposed three-stage power management system for TENGs are verified using a prototype system.
A decode-and-forward system with an energy-harvesting relay is analyzed for the case when an arbitrary number of independent interference signals affect the communication at both the relay and the destination nodes. The scenario in which the relay harvests energy from both the source and interference signals using a time switching scheme is analyzed. The analysis is performed for the interference-limited Nakagami-m fading environment, assuming a realistic nonlinearity for the electronic devices. The closed-form outage probability expression for the system with a nonlinear energy harvester is derived. An asymptotic expression valid for the case of a simpler linear harvesting model is also provided. The derived analytical results are corroborated by an independent simulation model. The impacts of the saturation threshold power, the energy-harvesting ratio, and the number and power of the interference signals on the system performance are analyzed.
