  • A two-dimensional numerical investigation is performed to study the influence of slot width of multi-stage stationary floating overtopping wave energy devices on overtopping flow rate and performance. The hydraulic efficiency based on captured crest energy of different device layouts is compared with that of single-stage device to determine the effect of the geometrical design. The results show optimal trends giving a huge increase in overtopping energy. Plots of efficiency versus the relative slot width show that, for multi-stage devices, the greatest hydraulic efficiency is achieved at an intermediate value of the variable within the parametric range considered, relative slot width of 0.15 and 0.2 depending on design layouts. Moreover, an application of adaptive slot width of multi-stage device is investigated. The numerical results show that the overall hydraulic efficiency of non-adaptive and adaptive slot devices are approximately on par. The effect of adaptive slot width on performance can be negligible.

  • The reasonable setting of coal pillar width plays a key role in guaranteeing the steadiness of surrounding rock of fully mechanized caving gateroad driving along the next goaf. Based on the engineering background of the Bayangaole mine, the discrete element method was used to simulate the fracture evolution of coal pillars with different pillar widths. The results show that the damage rate of the coal pillar increases with the decrease in the width of the coal pillar. Once the coal pillar width is smaller than 6 m, cracks run through the coal pillar, and the coal pillar is completely damaged. In the middle of the coal pillar, which has a width of 6 m and above, there is a relatively complete area with low damage. The results show that the pillar width of 6 m is the most appropriate. Field tests prove that the reserved width of a 6 m small coal pillar can effectively control the surrounding rock deformation, ensuring the overall steadiness of the gateroad in the thick coal seam. It is hoped that this study will offer some reference for the determination of the reasonable size of the coal pillar.

  • The interaction of head waves with an infinite row of identical, equally spaced, rectangular breakwaters is investigated in the presence of uneven bottom topography. Using linear water wave theory and matched eigenfunction expansion method, the boundary value problem is transformed into a system of linear algebraic equations which are numerically solved to know the velocity potentials completely. Utilizing this method, reflected and transmitted wave energy are computed for different physical parameters along with the wave field in the vicinity of breakwaters. It is observed that the wave field becomes more complicated when the incoming wavelength becomes smaller than the channel width. A critical ratio of the gap width to the channel width, corresponding to the inflection point of the transmitted energy variation, is identified for which 1/3 of the total energy is transmitted. Similarly, depending on the incident wavelength, there is a critical breakwater width for which a minimum energy is transmitted. Further, the accuracy of the computed results is verified by using the derived energy relation.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of collimator width on effective atomic number (EAN), relative electron density (RED), and stopping power ratio (SPR) measured by dual-layer dual-energy computed tomography (DL-DECT). Methods: CIRS electron density calibration phantoms with two different arrangements of material plugs were scanned by DL-DECT with two different collimator widths. The first phantom included two dense bone plugs, while the second excluded dense bone plugs. The collimator widths selected were 64 mm×0.625 mm for wider collimators and 16 mm×0.625 mm for narrow collimators. The scanning parameters were 120 kVp, 0.33 second gantry rotation, 3 mm slice thickness, B reconstruction filter, and spectral level 4. An image analysis portal system provided by a computed tomography (CT) manufacturer was used to derive the EAN and RED of the phantoms from the combination of low energy and high energy CT images. The EAN and RED were compared between the images scanned using the two different collimation widths. Results: The CT images with the wider collimation width generated more severe artifacts, particularly with high-density material (i.e., dense bone). RED and EAN for tissues (excluding lung and bones) with the wider collimation width showed significant relative differences compared to the theoretical value (4.5% for RED and 20.6% for EAN), while those with the narrow collimation width were closer to the theoretical value of each material (2.2% for EAN and 2.3% for RED). Scanning with narrow collimation width increased the accuracy of SPR estimation even with high-density bone plugs in the phantom. Conclusions: The effect of CT collimation width on EAN, RED, and SPR measured by DL-DECT was evaluated. In order to improve the accuracy of the measured EAN, RED, and SPR by DL-DECT, CT scanning should be performed using narrow collimation widths.

  • In this study, the W-interconnected dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) modules composed of a number of rectangular cells connected in series were investigated, where neighboring cells are processed in reverse. The DSSC modules, a module of dimension about 200 mm ${\times}$ 200 mm, were fabricated with different working electrode width ranging from 5 mm to 21 mm. The short-circuit current of the module increased as the working electrode width increased. Whereas, the decrease in the working electrode width resulted in the increase of the conversion energy efficiency, fill factor, and open-circuit voltage, which is explained by the fact that the possibility that electrons are recombined along their path on the transparent conductive oxide substrate decreases. The module with the conversion energy efficiency of 3.59% was obtained with the working electrode width of 5 mm.

  • This study was on electrode design for the realization of a solar cell that combines electrode formation and module integration process to overcome printing limitations. We used the passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) solar cell. Wafer size was 156.75 mm ×156.75 mm. The fabricated cell results showed that the open-circuit voltage of 649 mV, short-circuit current density of 36.15 mA/cm2, fill factor of 68.5%, and efficiency of 16.06% with electrode conditions the 24BBs with the width 190 ㎛ and 90FBs with the width 45 ㎛. For improving efficiency, the characteristics of the solar cell were checked according to the change in the number of BBs and FBs and the change in line fine width. It is confirmed that the efficiency of the solar cell will be improved by increasing the number of FBs from 90 to 120, and increasing the line width of the FBs by about 10 ㎛ compared to the manufacturing solar cells.

  • Yielding dampers exhibit varying cyclic behavior based on their geometry. These dampers not only increase the energy dissipation of the structure but also increase the strength and stiffness of the structure. In this study, parametric investigations were carried out to explore the impact of angled U-shape damper (AUSD) dimensions on its cyclic behavior. Initially, the numerical model was calibrated using the experimental specimen. Subsequently, analytical equations were presented to calculate the yield strength and elastic stiffness, which agreed with the experimental results. The outcomes of the parametric studies encompassed ultimate strength, effective stiffness, energy dissipation, and equivalent viscous damper ratio (EVDR). These output parameters were compared with similar dampers. Also, the magnitude of the effect of damper dimensions on the results was investigated. The results of parametric studies showed that the yield strength is independent of the damper width. The length and thickness of the damper have the greatest effect on the elastic stiffness. Reducing length and width resulted in increased energy dissipation, effective stiffness, and ultimate strength. Damper width had a more significant effect on EVDR than its length. On average, every 5 mm increase in damper thickness resulted in a 3.6 times increase in energy dissipation, 3 times the effective stiffness, and 3 times the ultimate strength of the model. Every 15 mm reduction in damper width and length increased energy dissipation by 14% and 24%, respectively.

  • There are many researches to make low-energy building. Lots of them focus on facility systems and insulation performance of building materials. However, not only systematic solutions but also approaches in early design stages are important to reduce energy consumption. Using BIM(Building Information Modelling) is considered as an effective and efficient way to simulate building energy and decide alternatives than traditional energy simulation because BIM based energy simulation makes to reduce much time for energy modeling. This study focuses on development of optimized geometry for super tall office buildings in Seoul, Korea. Specifically, length to width ratio and building orientation are main topics of this study because these two topics are the most basic and preceding factors deciding mass design. In this study, Revit MEP 2011 and Ecotect Analysis 2011 are used to make case models and calculate energy load in early design stages. Energy properties of material abide by Korean Standards for Energy Conservation in Building, Korean Guideline for Energy Conservation in Public Office and ASHRAE Standard in USA. This study presents best length to width ratio of plan and optimized orientation by evaluating the case models. Furthermore, this study suggests what should be considered for each case to decrease energy load.

  • Detonation cell width is an important parameter in hydrogen explosion assessments. The experimental data on gas detonation are statistically analyzed to establish a universal method to numerically predict detonation cell widths. It is commonly understood that detonation cell width, ${\lambda}$, is highly correlated with the characteristic reaction zone width, ${\delta}$. Classical parametric regression methods were widely applied in earlier research to build an explicit semiempirical correlation for the ratio of ${\lambda}/{\delta}$. The obtained correlations formulate the dependency of the ratio ${\lambda}/{\delta}$ on a dimensionless effective chemical activation energy and a dimensionless temperature of the gas mixture. In this paper, support vector regression (SVR), which is based on nonparametric machine learning, is applied to achieve functions with better fitness to experimental data and more accurate predictions. Furthermore, a third parameter, dimensionless pressure, is considered as an additional independent variable. It is found that three-parameter SVR can significantly improve the performance of the fitting function. Meanwhile, SVR also provides better adaptability and the model functions can be easily renewed when experimental database is updated or new regression parameters are considered.
