  • We developed a Windows-based program for discrete event simulation of truck-loader haulage systems in an underground mine. The Daesung MDI limestone mine located in Samcheok City, Gangwon Province, Korea was selected as the study area to design the program. The developed program is composed of the graphic user interface (GUI) and simulation engine implemented by Visual Basic.NET 2012 and the GPSS/H simulation language, respectively. When a user sets up input parameters for the discrete event simulation through GUI, the program activates the simulation engine, and then simulation results are displayed on GUI. This paper describes the details of the program development as well as its applications to the study area to determine the optimal number of trucks dispatched at each loading point under different operating conditions.

  • Understanding the frictional properties of rock discontinuities is crucial to ensure the stability of underground structures. In particular, the frictional behavior at depth depends on the complex interaction among mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and chemical characteristics and their coupled effects. In this study, a series of shear tests were carried out in a triaxial compression chamber to investigate the shearing behavior of saw-cut granite surface and rough shear surface of synthetic rocks. The test results were analyzed using Coulomb's shear strength criterion. The frictional behavior of saw-cut granite surface showed little variation at different confining, water pressures and temperature conditions, however in case of synthetic rocks, the frictional behavior showed different trend depending on normal stress level. In addition, the variation of stiffness and dilation at different testing conditions were analyzed, and the stiffness and dilation showed little variation at different water pressures and temperature conditions.

  • Magnesium is one of the light weight materials, which can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions in automotive industry. Recently, magnesium alloys have gained considerable attention due to good mechanical properties. In this work, we have performed an explosive welding using the magnesium alloys (AZ31) and stainless steel (SUS 304). As a result, SUS304/AZ31 were successfully combined each other; however, a resolidified interlayer was observed at the point of welded layer. To reduce the resolidified interlayer, we have changed the thickness (0.5 mm and 1 mm) of stainless steel, distance (45 mm and 60 mm) between explosive and the center of materials and initial angle ($20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$) of explosive. In the case of the thickness 0.5 mm and angle of $30^{\circ}$, the resolidfied interlayer was not observed due to the increase of distance from the explosive. To accurately estimate the resolidified interlayer, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) method and hardness were used. For the EPMA analysis, mixed materials were confirmed at the resolidified interlayer, and the measurement exhibited the middle value compared with the AZ31 and SUS304.

  • Many studies have been carried out to produce 3D features in the size range between $10{\mu}m\~10,000{\mu}m$, called Meso-scale. If these miniaturized systems have high relative accuracy and good volumetric utilization, it is possible to manufacture more complex and accurate shapes with various materials as well as there are advantages of reducing energy, space and resources. Due to imperfect components and misalignment in assembly, it is necessary to assess the accuracy of the miniaturized system itself to obtain high relative accuracy. Laser interferometers are widely used to measure geometric errors called as quasi-static errors. For miniaturized system, however, it is difficult to install the required accessories such as optics and the measuring range is limited because of the size of the system and also this method is very expensive. Moreover, it is impossible to measure each error component simultaneously. A new system to measure simultaneously multiple geometric errors is proposed using capacitance sensors. Each error was measured using capacitance sensors and a measurement algorithm was mathematically derived. The experiments show that the proposed measurement system can be used effectively to assess the accuracy of miniaturized system at a low cost.

  • The incidence of cardiovascular disease increases rapidly after 40's. The thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue was measured to analyze the risk factors affecting the thickness change. We present the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for high impacted variables. For the study, 547 patients underwent echocardiography, epicardial adipose tissue thickness, body mass index, abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and diabetes mellitus were used as analytical variables. As a result, multiple regression analysis of age group showed that diabetes mellitus was highly influential in all age group, so we could predict the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for diabetes mellitus. As a result of ROC curve analysis, cut off value of 7.44 mm was obtained with sensitivity of 79.6% and specificity of 60.6% for diab etes variab le. Logistic regression analysis b ased on this value showed that the risk for diab etes increased 6 times with each increase in the thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue. Among the various obesity indexes, epicardial adipose tissue is used as an important index especially to prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we suggest that the use of echocardiography as a routine screening method for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, which is rapidly increasing in patients over 40's age, will enable more effective monitoring. Radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium.

  • This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP(Smoke Movement Estimating Program) code to the simulation of fire induced flows in the two types of atrium space containing a ceiling heat flux. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k- epsilon turbulence model with buoyancy term. Compressibility is assumed and the perfect gas law is used. The results of the calculated upper-layer average temperature and smoke layer interface height has shown reasonable agreement compared with the zone models. The zone models used are the CFAST developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratory NIST U.S.A. and the NBTC one-room of FIRECALC developed at CSIRO, Australia. The smoke layer interface heights that are important in fire safety were not as sensitive as the smoke layer temperature to the nature of ceiling heat flux condition.

  • From January 1980 to May 1995, ninety-six patients had been treated by free-flap transfer for the soft tissue defects of the extremities. Ninety-eight cases of free-tissue transfer were reviewed to evaluate the clinical reliability in terms of survival and quality of long-time function after reconstructive surgery. Among these 98 cases(27 cases in latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, 25 in dorsalis pedis flap, 20 in forearm fasciocutaneous flap, 9 in groin flap, 7 in gracilis myocutaneous flap, 6 in 1st web space flap of foot and 4 cases in tensor fascia lata flap), 92 cases of then were survived. 7 cases were performed with vein grafts. We ananalyzed the reconstruction of the extremities on 98 cases with the soft tissue defects which had been reconstructed free-flap transfer and followed for minimum 1 year period at Korea University Hospital. 1. 92 cases(93.9%) of the total 98 cases were successful and can be obtained the excellent results in soft tissue free-flap transfer. 2. While there were no clinically significant differences in survival rate of flaps transferred from different potential flap donor sites,3 cases of 9 groin flaps were showed higher failure rate due to the complications such as arterial thrombosis, infection and anatomical variation of vessels. 3. Postoperative thrombectomy was performed in 30 cases to be occured in the arterial and venous thrombosis. The revision was failed in 2 cases due to persistent arterial thrombosis and infection, then treated with skin graft. 4. Vein graft was frequently required in severely compromised-soft tissue defects resulted from high-energy trauma. The vein graft was not stitistically significant on the frequency of flap failure rate(P<0.04). 5. Meticulous monitoring, careful planning, early revision and technical considerations will provide for a high clinical success of the free-flap transfer.

  • The present study developed a new technique with no physical object on the flow stream but enabling the air flow measurement and easily incorporated with the devices for cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) procedure. A turbulence chamber was formed in the middle of the respiratory tube by locally enlarging the cross-sectional area where the flow related turbulence was generated inducing energy loss which was in turn converted into pressure difference. The turbulence chamber was simply an empty enlarged air space, thus no physical object existed on the flow stream, but still the flow rate could be evaluated. Computer simulation demonstrated stable turbulence formation big enough to measure. Experiment was followed on the proto-type transducer, the results of which were within ${\pm}5%$ error compared to the simulation data. Both inspiratory and expiratory flows were obtained with symmetric measurement characteristics. Quadratic curve fitting provided excellent calibration formula with a correlation coefficient>0.999(P<0.0001) and the mean relative error<1%. The present results can be usefully applied to accurately monitor the air flow rate during CPR.

A Study on the ecological characteristics of the 'traditional house' and how it is ecologically applied from a natural aspect (자연성에 근거한 전통주거건축의 생태학적 특성과 적용에 관한 연구)

  • The concept of the true house' is based on the balance of a person's life and nature and represents the life in which lies an organic harmony between environment and ecology. However, humans have always been in a position of dominance over nature and with their developments have brought on much destruction and corruption to the ecosystem. With this, the position of the true house has intensified and the ecological approach of architecture has started to come into consideration as its alternative plan. Accordingly, it is essential to reconstruct and take on a new perspective of nature. The conversion to a more Oriental approach, which dwells in the adaptation and harmony of nature, is especially sufficient to the ecological aspect of architecture. From this we can realize that the ecological approach is none other than a modern interpretation of what our ancestors have lived by. In other words, an architectural concept deriving from the adaptation of climate, season, and nature-the coexistence of man and nature. From an ecological point of view, the idea of favoring nature in the traditional house can be found in the inclination of being one with nature by adapting to its geographical and preferable climate conditions. This results in the use of natural energy, the use of natural resources, the organic connection between the inner and outer natural space, and the application of nature itself. By approaching these elements from a modern point of view and applying it to the current time, we can open up the door to a more lasting human-environment based ecological position of architecture where our own climatic characteristics and traditions can be reflected in the pursuit of harmony between man and nature.
