  • Recently, wind power generation is an emerging industry expanding its market rapidly thanks to the increasing need to solve the scarcity of fossil fuels and the risk of potential global warming. Wind power generation has shown to be an effective response plan to global warming, showing the most price competitiveness among the renewable energy sources by its higher efficiency. Therefore wind energy has attracted considerable attention as the industrial growth drive for the next generation. Considering Korea's high dependence of overseas energy resources, the importance of wind power is growing as the most effective alternative energy source to ensure energy security as well as becoming a key strategic industry for exports. In this study, the social and economic effects of the wind power industry is discussed and the current status and the future prospects of the wind energy market is also examined.

  • Buildings nowadays are increasingly expected to need higher and more economic performance requirements. Energy consumption in buildings accounts for over 30% of total energy use. The Building Energy Management System (BEMS) and renewable energy (RE) technologies are considered as a potential measure to improve energy efficiency and reduce use of grid-power. It is, however, a challenge to utilise the intermittent energy supply of RE in building energy systems. This paper presents an experimental study on a RE-embedded BEMS. A control algorithm for the RE-embedded BEMS was designed to maximise the utilisation of RE and eventually to reduce electrical utility bill. The proposed system is tested at a laboratorial chamber with an air conditioner, fan and heater. The contribution of RE in building energy system is discussed to this end.

  • The technology of harvesting energy wasted in daily life is becoming increasingly important for sustainable energy production and climate change. In this study, we investigated an electrochemical energy harvesting system using blue energy generated by the movement of electrodes. We observed that energy could be harvested based on the electrification phenomenon that occurs when an electrode comes into contact with an electrolyte, particularly when the electrode is modified with a self-as-sembled monolayer (SAM) containing the fluorocarbons. The static charges, which are generated by electrification based on the energy level difference between the electrode and the electrolyte, could be transferred to an external circuit. Additionally, we discovered that structural features of SAM molecules are related to the efficiency of energy harvesting, including the number of fluorocarbons. This system successfully powered an LED, proving the practicality of electrochemical harvesting using blue energy. The results suggest the potential for developing more efficient and high-output energy harvesting systems through the application of various SAM molecules.

  • Energy management aims to financial and ecological success by optimizing the energy consuming sources such as sensors, computers and appliances. Hence, acquiring energy-related data from the sources in an automated manner is the starting point of managing energy. Recently, awareness computing has been emerging in system and cybernetics area. Awareness is the most fundamental ability for any living things to survive, and also the first step to make systems intelligent with the help of artificial intelligence. Even though the potential reciprocal benefits between energy management and awareness computing, frameworks which show how awareness computing contributes to manage energy-related strategy have been very few. Hence, this paper aims to introduce the awareness computing issues to improve energy management. In particular, we focus on satisfaction awareness computing which potentially realize the balance of energy savings and user's utility.

  • The General program evaluation guide is intended for use by managers of both deployment and R&D programs within the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), although most of the examples of evaluations pertain to deployment programs(EERE,2006). It could help managers determine what kinds of timely adjustments may be needed in program design or implementation to improve the rate or quality of achievement relative to the committed resources. To consider the adaptation of the method in Korea, we have studied the evaluation case for solar america initiative using cost-benefit evaluation. The President's Solar America Initiative (SAI) was launched in January 2006 as part of the administration's Advanced Energy Initiative. The SAI has a goal of installing 5-10 GW of photovoltaic (PV) systems in the U.S. by 2015 and 70-100 GW of PV systems in the U.S. by 2030. The evaluation report presents estimates of the potential benefits should the SAI PV installation goals be achieved. For this analysis, the areas researched include energy, economic, and environmental benefits. As a result, research suggests that 500 MW of PV may have been enough to avoid lackout. The ability of PV to prevent specific blackouts will depend on very specific information on where the PV installations are installed and their ability to relieve pressure on the high stress points on the grid. While this level of detail is outside the scope of this study, it appears that there will be some potential benefit for blackout prevention should the SAI PV goals be achieved.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has received significant attention recently because of its potential for the clean and efficient power generation. The current manufacturing processes for the SOFC components are somehow complex and expensive, therefore, new and innovative techniques are necessary to provide a great deal of cell performance and fabricability. Three-dimensional (3D) printing processes have the potential to provide a solution to all these problems. This study reviews the literature for manufacturing the SOFC components using 3D printing processes. The technical aspects for fabrication of SOFC components, 3D printing processes optimization and material characterizations are discussed. Comparison of the SOFC components fabricated by 3D printing to those manufactured by conventional ceramic processes is highlighted. Further advancements in the 3D printing of the SOFC components can be a step closer to the cost reduction and commercialization of this technology.

  • South Korea, ranks 10th largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, will probably be under the obligation to reduce GHG emission from 2013. It is very important to reduce the electrical energy consumption since 30% of GHG emission in South Korea is made during electricity generation. In this study, based on "the 1st national energy master plan", the GHG emission reduction potential and the feasibility of the scenario in the electricity generation have been analyzed using LEAP(Long-range Energy Alternative Planning system). The scenario of the mater plan contains the 41% expansion of nuclear power plant facilities and the 11% diffusion of renewable energy until 2030. In result, total $CO_2$ emission reduction rate is 28.8% in 2030. Also $CO_2$ emission of unit electricity generation of bituminous coal power plant is $0.85kgCO_2/kWh$ and its LNG power plant is $0.51kgCO_2/kWh$ in BAU scenario. Therefore when existing facilities is exchanged for nuclear or renewable energy power plant, substitute of bituminous power plant is more effective than LNG power.

  • New and renewable has the potential to play an important role in providing energy with sustainability to Vietnamese people. Over the past few years, the Vietnamese government has promulgated several policies in an effort to promote the use of new and renewable energy. However, the development of new and renewable energy in Vietnam is still stagnant, the share of new and renewable energy in total commercial energy is insignificant. The study aims to analyze the developments in renewable energy policies and prospects for Vietnam based on the Korean experience in promoting new and renewable energy. By referring to the policy instruments adopted by the Korean government as well as the results of these policy, recommendations and proposals are provided in order to overcome the barriers to the new and renewable development in Vietnam.

  • With the prospect of an increasing shortage of energy resources, there has been a growing interest in renewable alternative sources of energy. An increasing effort is being directed towards resolving the problems of extracting energy from the world's oceans, as they represent a vast potential source of renewable energy. This paper summarizes the extraction and conversion techniques of the ocean's energy resources, namely, energy derived from the ocean waves, tides, thermal gradients, and currents. For each energy extraction and conversion technique, case studies are discussed.

  • The recent technology of Wind Energy Conversion System(WECS) in the world is well-developed and the feasibility of WECS is better than the past time. So, it is necessary to re-analyze the characteristics of wind energy in this country. This paper deals with the analysis of wind energy distribution in Korean Peninsula, Cheju and Ullung island. The assessment was performed based on the raw data collected 64 meteorological stations for the last 10 years. The wind energy characteristics were analyzed hourly, monthly, seasonally and annually. The Weibull distribution was assumed and two parameters in all areas were calculated and the wind energy potential distribution in Korea was obtained.
