  • Offshore wind power structures are subject to coastal hydrodynamic loading such as wind and wave loads. A considerable number of turbines have been installed in Europe, but so far none in Korea. Interest in offshore wind energy is growing in Korea, and it is expected that projects will reach the design stage in the near future. This paper discusses the level of structural reliability implied by the design rules of ABS(2010, 2013) and IEC(2009). Metocean conditions in 4 Korean seas(Gunsan, HeMOSU 1, Mokpo, Jeju) were used in the calibrations to calculate the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads as well as the structural responses of the typical designs of offshore wind turbines. Due to the higher variability of the wind and wave climate in hurricane-prone areas, applying IEC strength design criteria in combination with Korea west sea conditions could result in a design with much lower reliability index than what is anticipated from a design in European waters. To achieve the same level of safety as those in European waters, application of ABS 100 year design standards are recommended. Level-1 reliability-based design suitable for the Korean sea state conditions should be introduced because the IEC standards does not consider the typhoon effects in depth and the ABS standards is a WSD design method. In addition, the design equation should be established based on the statistical characteristics of the wind and wave loads of the Korean sea areas.

  • To analyze the effects of the system parameters on the target parameters, which include the amount of water evaporation, water solubility index(WSI) and water absorption index(WAI), test trials of fractional factorial design of the three process variables at three levels were carried out for corn grit with a laboratory twin-screw extruder with three different screw configurations. The system parameters collected from the trials, such as extrusion temperature, specific mechanical energy input(SME) and mean residence time(RT), were showed the ranges of $129{\sim}182^{\circ}C$, $67{\sim}163\;kwh/ton$ and $12{\sim}34\;sec$, respectively. Within these ranges of the system parameters, the target parameters were able to be quantified by using multiple regression equations. The correlation of results with the system parameters blocked by the screw configuration as dependent variables, yield correlation coefficients above 0.90, and the correlation using the system parameters obtained from whole experiment system as the dependent variables yield correlation coefficients around 0.80. The functional relationship, which can be quantified by second order polynomial regression equation with only two system parameters within necessary degree of accuracy, can he graped in three dimensional surface response and contour diagrams.

  • This study was carried out to predict the shelf-life of emulsified red ginseng beverage. To investigate the quality changes during the storage, physicochemical properties such as acidity, pH, droplet size, Hunter's color value and sensory evaluation test were measured periodically. It was found that acidity, pH, and droplet sizes were little changed in initial stage. After about 70 days of storage, however, they tended to be changed possibly due to Maillard reaction. From the results of correlation analysis between sensory evaluation results and physicochemical characteristics, a-value was chosen as a quality index of red ginseng emulsions. Using reaction constants at various temperature, the activation energy and the $Q_{10}$ value for the a-value from Arrhenius equation found to be 13.37 kcal/mol, 1.56-2.14, respectively. It could be concluded that the shelf-life of red ginseng emulsions estimated to be 730 days (approximately 2 years) when stored at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary variables and the prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) in middle-aged Korean adults using data from the 2007-2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Because IR is closely linked with metabolic syndrome, subjects were divided into three groups according to symptoms of metabolic syndrome: the 'Normal group' without any symptoms, the 'Risk group' with one or two symptoms, and the Metabolic syndrome (MetS) group' with three or more symptoms. Subjects between the ages of 30 and 65 years with no prior diagnosis or treatment for diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia were selected. The number of subjects per group was as follows: 2,085 adults in the Normal group, 3,699 adults in the Risk group, and 1,160 adults in the MetS group. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to Adult Treatment Panel III criteria with modified waist circumference cutoff values (men ${\geq}$ 90 cm, women ${\geq}$ 85 cm). Subjects with HOMA-IR > 2.0 were classified as IR. Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated using the following formula: (fasting plasma glucose ${\times}$ fasting plasma insulin)/22.5. Nutrients and food groups intake were obtained from a single 24-hour recall. Subjects with IR in the Normal group were more obese and less physically active than non-IR subjects. In the MetS group, subjects with IR were more obese and had a lower prevalence of smoking and drinking, compared with non-IR subjects. Men with IR in the Normal group had a tendency to consume more oils and sugars than non-IR men, while women with IR in the same group had higher intake of carbohydrate, dietary glycemic index, and dietary glycemic load than non-IR women. Women with IR in the Risk group had lower energy intake but higher intake of oils and sugars than non-IR women. In the MetS group, consumption of fruits was higher in subjects with IR than in non-IR subjects. In conclusion, findings of this study suggest that dietary carbohydrate intake, including glycemic index, may be associated with IR in healthy women. Further research in prospective cohort studies in order to examine the effects of dietary carbohydrate on IR incidence will be necessary.

  • Using the CGE model, this paper investigates economic impacts of a shortage in crude oil resulting from voluntary export restraints, OPEC's agreement of a cut in oil production, and/or a storing on speculation. Unlike most previous studies considering oil price as the unpredictable variable, this study constructs the model to determine the oil price endogenously under the condition of an insufficient supply of crude oil. According to IEA's extraordinary steps for a shortage of crude oil, we investigate an economic impact of 7~12% shortage below the level of business as usual. The results show that oil price soars by 17.3~33.5%, the rate of economic growth falls by 0.52~0.96%p, and the consumer price index(CPI) rises by 0.8~1.51%p. These results imply that increasing in 1%p of oil price results in decreasing in 0.03%p of economic growth and increasing in 0.045%p of consumer price index. The production of electricity declines because of the increase in production cost. A shortage of crude oil has an effect on sources of electricity. Most reduction in electricity generation occurs from the reduction in the thermal power generation which is highly dependent on crude oil. The shortage of crude oil causes demand for petroleum to significantly decline but demand for coal and heat to increase because of the substitution effect with petroleum. Demand for gas rise in the first year but falls from the second year.

  • Water quality investigation was conducted for small/medium sized reservoirs in A city in June and November 2014 as a preliminary step for further use. Water quality analysis experiments were conducted for 21 reservoirs managed by a local government and water quality data were obtained from Korea Rural Community Corporation for 12 reservoirs. It was found that relatively poor water quality, not satisfied with the regulation level (somewhat poor(IV)) for agricultural use, was observed for some reservoirs and worse water quality (poor(V) and very poor(VI) grade) was observed for more reservoirs during autumn /winter season due to the decrease in water volume. Correspondingly, the trophic state was obtained as "Eutrophic" or "Hypertrophic" using the Korean trophic state index for most reservoirs. It was also revealed that significant contamination in sediments was not observed for selected 8 reservoirs considering water quality in each reservoir. The results in this study could be useful for the use of small/medium sized reservoirs as alternative water resources, tourism resources, inland fishery resources, renewable energy production sites, and anti-flooding reservoirs.

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the growth pattern of infants by anthropometric measurement according to the 5 feeding practices of infants with the subject of two hundred healthy newborn babies from their birth till sixty month of age at intervals of two months. Breast group(BF, n=38), formula group(FF, n=102) and mixed group(ME, n=14) were fed breast milk, formula milk, breast and formula milk, from birth till 6 mo. of age, respectively. Convert 1 group (C1F, n=14) and covert 2 group(CF, n=32) were fed breast milk and mixed milk at 2 mo. of age afterthat switched to formula milk, respectively. From these, the following results were made. All the infants of this study showed superiority to Korean standard growth rate in regards to each growth item for each month age. In the case of males, at their birth, the subscapular skinfold thickness and the total skin fold thickness in the BF group was significantly larger than in MF group and FF group(p<0.05). At 6th month age, the chese circumference of MF group was 45.9cm, and significantly larger than those of BF, FF and C2F groups(p<0.05). In the case of females, at theri birth and 2nd month age, there was no difference among all the feeding groups in regards to each growth rate. At 4th month age, the Kauf index of C1F group was 16.21 and significantly lower than those of four groups(p<0.05). And total skinfold thickness in BF group was larger than in C1F group. The increase rate per month age of all growth items were larger at 2nd month age than at the later months both in males and in females. And until 2nd month age males showed more increase than females in regards to each growth item but after 2nd month age, this sapect did not show up. Multiple linear regression was used to determine predictive factors for infant growth. It was expected that at 6th month age, in the measurement of head circumference and chest circumference and cross-sectional fat area, BF-males were bigger by 22-39% of the explanation index than the infants of other groups. As a result, in spite of the significant lower intakes of energy and nutrients in breast-fed infants than in formula-fed infants, breast-fed infants showed more growth than the average of Korean infant standard growth rate at every month age, and showed no significant growth difference among feeding groups.

  • This study set put to measure the environmental radiation for mountainous regions of National Parks where Integrated Environmental Radiation Monitoring Network is not installed. For the measurement method, the space dose was classified at 1 meter high from the surface and the index dose at the surface. The measured radiation energy measured gamma, alpha and beta rays. For selection of national parks, we selected 10 national parks which are within the same distribution in the southern part and central part of the nation. For measurement equipment, INTERCEPTOR$^{TM}$(Thermo, USA, 2006) was used for gamma rays. As for the results of the measurements, for the space gamma dose, a high level was measured at a sea level of 500 meter in national parks with an altitude of less than 1,000 meter. It was found that the value was more than $0.23{\mu}Svh^{-1}$ especially in Bukhan Mountain, Gyeryong Mountain and Wolchul Mountain. In national parks with an altitude of more than 1,000 meter, $1.77{\mu}Svh^{-1}$ was measured at 1,500 meter at Seorak Mountain. Therefore, this is 10 times greater than the background standard dose. The national parks were there were no significant changes in dose were Naejang Mountain, Sobaek and Jiri Mountains. For the measurement of the index dose, a high dose level was measured at middle altitudes of 500 meter and 1,000 meter. For measurement according to the composition types of crust, high doses were recorded at national parks composed of rocks and a lower environmental radiation level was measured at Hanra Mountain where volcanic activities have occurred.

  • This study aimed to identify changes in the level of neuropeptides among current smokers, former smokers, and individuals who had never smoked, and how smoking habits affect obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Neuropeptide levels, anthropometric parameters, and metabolic syndrome diagnostic indices were determined among male workers; 117 of these had never smoked, whereas 58 and 198 were former and current smokers, respectively. The total sample comprised 373 male workers. The results obtained from anthropometric measurements showed that current smokers attained significantly lower body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and abdominal fat thickness values than former smokers and those who had never smoked. Current smokers' eating habits proved worse than those of non-smokers and individuals who had never smoked. The level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the neuropeptides in the case of former smokers was $23.6{\pm}9.2pg/ml$, higher than that of current smokers ($20.4{\pm}6.1$) and individuals who had never smoked ($22.4{\pm}5.8$) (F = 6.520, p = 0.002). The level of adiponectin among former smokers was somewhat lower than that of current smokers, whereas leptin levels were higher among former smokers than current smokers; these results were not statistically significant. A relationship was found between adiponectin and triglyceride among non-smokers (odds ratio = 0.660, ${\beta}$ value=-0.416, p < 0.01) and smokers (odds ratio = 0.827, ${\beta}$ value=-0.190, p < 0.05). Further, waist circumference among non-smokers (odds ratio = 1.622, ${\beta}$ value=0.483, p < 0.001) and smokers (odds ratio = 1.895, ${\beta}$ value=0.639, p < 0.001) was associated with leptin. It was concluded that cigarette smoking leads to an imbalance of energy expenditure and appetite by changing the concentration of neuropeptides such as adiponectin, BDNF, leptin, and hsCRP, and influences food intake, body weight, the body mass index, blood pressure, and abdominal fat, which are risk factors for MetS and cardiovascular disease.

  • This study was performed to assess diet qualities by sexes and ages of adults over thirty years old in Jeon-ju area. Diet survey with one day 24-recall method was used done for 382 subjects(129 males & 253 females). Survey sample was divided into six groups by sex and age groups: male 30-49, male 50-64, male 50-64, male 65-79, female 30-49, female 50-64 and female 65-79 years. Diet quality was assessed by NAR(Nutrient Adequacy Ratio), MAR(Mean Adequacy Ratio), INQ(Index of nutrition quality), KDDS(Koreans Dietary Diversity Score), Meal Balance, DVS(Dietary Variety Score), DQI(Diet Quality Index). The 5-point DQI assessed the important dietary guidelines for Koreans. The averages of energy, protein, P, vitamin B$_1$, vitamin B$_2$, niacin and vitamin C intakes were higher than 70% of RDA. The averages intakes of Ca and vitamin A were very lower than RDA all groups. The averages of MAR were 0.78, 0.81, 0.83 in male 30-49, 50-64, 64-79 years, 0.73, 0.77, 0.71 and in female 30-49, 50-64, 65-79 years, respectively. The averages of MAR in female 30-49 years and female 65-79 years were significantly lower than the averages MAR of male 65-79 years. The averages of Sugars and Beverages intakes were significantly higher in male 30-49 years than others. Animal food intake ratio(% total food intake) in the male 65-79 years(16%) was significantly higher than male 30-49 years(11%). The averages of Nutrition intakes were higher in male compared to female. The subjects who consumed all of the major five food groups were 5% in male 30-49, 17.8% in male 50-64, 25.0% in male 65-79 years, 18.9% in female 30-49, 23.7% in female 50-64, 11.5% in female 65-79 years. The averages of KDDS were 3.5, 3.9, 3.9, 3.8, 3.8, 3.5, respectively. The averages of Meal Balance were 8.6, 9.1, 9.1, 8.3, 8.4, 7.8, respectively. The averages of DVS 20.1, 19.9, 19.9, 20.5, 19.0, 17.2, respectively. The averages of DQI were 1.7, 2.2, 2.1, 2.0, 2.1, 1.7, respectively. 81.8% of the subjects had KDDS scores of 2 to 4 and 87.3% of the subjects has Meal Balance scores 4 to 10. In contrast, 89.8% of the subjects had DQI scores of 0 to 3. In view of these facts there are few who observed the five dietary guidelines for Koreans. There findings suggest that dietary qualities were associated with nutrient intake the relation factors may vary by sex and age of adults over thirty years old in Jeon-ju area. Common problems were lack of Ca, vitamin A and dairy products intakes. Therefore adults over thirty years old in Jeon-ju area need the important nutrient management such as Ca, vitamin A.
