  • The present study was conducted to investigate physical characteristics, food habits of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellites(GDM). The subjects were consecutive pregnant women, 21 GDM and 43 non-GDM controls who received antenatal care at the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic. There were no significant difference in the mean age between the two groups(GDM:30.8years, non-GDM:30.5years). Significant differences were observed in several anthropometric characteristics such as height(GDM:159.7cm, non-GDM:162.3cm), prepregnancy weight(GDM:61.6kg, non-GDM:54.1kg), body mass index(GDM:23.9kg/$m^2$, non-GDM:20.5kg/$m^2$), and triceps skin fold thicknesses(GDM:30.9mm, non-GDM:24.7mm) between the two groups. The GDM group had an high incidence of(52.4%) family history of diabetes mellitus than those of control group(23.3%). In the GDM group, more irregularities of meals and more bed-time snacking were observed than those of control group. The intake amount of carbohydrates as well as the total energy were significantly higher in the GDM group when thery were compared with the control. These results suggest that the GDM women in Korea do exhibit clearly distinctive anthropometric and dietary characteristics. Nutritional management such as weight control before conception and throughout pregnancy, monitoring total energy and carbohydrate intakes, and implementing more rigorous meal scheduling might be beneficial for the prevention or reduction of the prevalence of the GDM or its complications. • This study investigated nutritional status and eating behaviors among 59 nephritic patients with mild kidney malfunction in Korea. Nutritional status was measured by blood analysis and 1-3 day dietary recall and records, and eating behaviors were assessed by a questionnaire. Mean Body Mass Index(BMI) was within the normal range, while 21% and 14% of the patients were underweight and overweight, respectively. They received nutrition information mainly from doctors, nurses and mass media, but rarely from nutrition professionals. A quarter of patients skipped breakfast at least 3 times per 12% of the patients, respectively. Energy intake of 83% of the patients was less than the recommended level. Protein intakes of 56% of them were either under or over the recommended levels. Patients had low vitamin B$_2$ and calcium(<75% of the RDA) and excessive phosphorus(138% RDA) and vitamin C(170% RDA). Major food sources to absolute nutrient intakes were similar to those for the average Koreas, except for milk. Milk intake was low in our patients. Dietary quantity and quality were associated positively with BMI, albumin, and HDL-cholesterol and negatively with triglycerides and BUN. Results of this study indicate low nutritional status of the patients and, in turn a need for conducting nutritional education or counselling at regular at regular basis for the nephritic patients with mild kidney malfunction.

  • A novel algorithm is proposed to regulate the neutral point potential in neutral point clamped three-level inverters. Oscillations of the neutral point potential and an unbalanced dc-link voltage cause distortions of the output voltage. Large capacitors, which make the application costly and bulky, are needed to eliminate oscillations. Thus, the algorithm proposed in this paper utilizes the finite-control-set model predictive control and the multistage medium vector to solve these issues. The proposed strategy consists of a two-step prediction and a cost function to evaluate the selected multistage medium vector. Unlike the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector is a mixture of the virtual vector and the original vector. In addition, its amplitude is variable. The neutral point current generated by it can be used to adjust the neutral point potential. When compared with the virtual vector method, the multistage medium vector contributes to decreasing the regulation time when the modulation index is high. The vectors are rearranged to cope with the variable switching frequency of the model predictive control. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed strategy.

  • PVB was blended with PMMA in order to recycle scraped PVB material which recovered in the safety glass manufactories. The purpose of this research on PVB/PMMA blend was applied with excellent tackiness and transparency of PVB as a material of high strength to make the maximum use. Also, the blending of PVB with PMMA was aimed at the increase of impact strength of PMMA because the elastic property of PVB might decrease the brittleness of PMMA due to the lack of inner impact resistance. Izod impact resistance was propotional to increase the content of PVB, which was predominantly increased in the addition of 10phr above MBS. High rate impact resistance showed a tendency to Increase but it showed a tendency to decrease maximum load and energy if the contents of PVB increased. On the other hand total energy and ductile index showed a tendency to increase excellent impact resistance in the addition of MBS contents. As a result of observed surface of PVB/PMMA blends, the size of PVB domain increased distribution homogenuously, in the addited MBS contents increased it showed distribution homogeneously and partially a wetability.

  • In this study, we found a relationship between wind shear exponent, ${\alpha}$, and a few factors such as the wind speed, $V$, ruggedness index($RIX$), and the Weibull shape parameter, $k$ of sites in complex terrain in Korea. Wind shear exponents in main wind directions were calculated using wind speed data measured for one year from various heights of eleven meteorological masts in Gangwon province. It was found from the analysis that the reciprocal of the wind shear exponent can be expressed by an exponentially decaying function with respect to a multiple of $V$, $RIX$ and $k$. This result is considered useful to be used to characterize wind characteristics of specific sites in complex terrain in Korea with limited information.

  • We have measured the optical properties, thickness, and energy band gap of the P $b_{1-x}$/100/L $a_{x}$100/ $Ti_{1-}$0.25x/100/ $O_{3}$ (PLT(x)) thin film prepared by the sol-gel method with varying the La concentration, x, fyom 15 nto 33 mol%. We have obtained the values from the tranmission spectrum and employed the envelope method in anayzing the spectrum. We have also performed the simulation of the transmission spectrum on the PC (personal computer) to verify the accuracy of the values 15 to 33mol%, the refractive index (at .lambda.=632.8nm) increases from 2.39 to 2.44. The extinction coefficient does not depend on the la concentration but mainly on te wavelength, and has the values between 0.2 and 0.5 at the wavelength shorter than 330nm and between 0.001 and 0.008 at the wavelength longer than 700nm. The energy band gap of the PLT (x) thin film has been obtained on the assumption of the direct band-to-band transition. It decreases from 3.28 to 3.17eV as the La concentration increases from 15 to 33 mol%. The thickness of the PLT(x) thin film has been also obtained in high accuracy by the envelope method..

  • It is highly important issue to use an energy efficiently for sustainable prosperity of mankind. From this point of view, using LED lighting can be a good alternative because it has a lot of advantages such as high efficiency, long life time and eco-friendly manufacturing process. That is the reason why using LED lighting has been encouraged worldwide. However, in situations that LED lighting is replacing traditional lighting quickly, the problem of the flicker of LED lighting has emerged as an important issue. Therefore, in foreign countries like US or Japan in order to ensure the reliability of LED lighting, study for flickering effects of the human body and test methods are have been actively conducted. But related research in domestic situation is an insufficient condition. In this study, a flicker characteristic was measured conventional lamps such as incandescent lamps or fluorescent lamp and 81 items of LED lightings which are distributed in domestic markets.

  • This study was conducted to examine the influences of chitosan, sericin and collagen extract complexes (1:1:1, w/w/w, CSC-F-005) in blood glucose and lipid concentrations in the sera of streptozotocin (STZ, 55 mg/kg BW, IP injection)-induced diabetic rats (SD strain) fed on experimental diets for 5 weeks. The concentrations of blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, ratio of HDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL-cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, triglyceride (TG) and phospholipid (PL) in serum were effective on the metabolic regulation in diabetic rats. The activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aminotransferase (AST, ALT) in serum were lower in the extract complexes (CSC-F-005) than in the diabetic rats. The results shown above suggested that CSC-F-005 extract complexes supplementation effectively improvement of blood glucose and lipid components in the serum of STZ-induced diabetic rats.
