This paper proposes the battery-less ultra-low-power self-powered cooperating artificial neural networks device for embedded and IoT systems. This device can work without extraneous power supplying and can cooperate with other neuromorphic devices to build large-scale neural networks. This device has energy harvesting modules, so that can build a self-powered system and be used everywhere without space constraints for power supplying.
In order to harvest power in an efficient manner from a micro piezoelectric (PZT) device for charging the battery of a remote system, a new AC/DC resonant pulse power converter is proposed. The proposed power converter has two stages in the power conversion process. The first stage includes N-type MOSFET full bridge rectifier. The second stage includes a boost converter having an N-type MOSFET and a P-type MOSFET. MOSFETs work in the $1^{st}$ or $3^{rd}$ quadrant region. A small inductor for the boost converter is assigned in order to make the size of the power converter as small as possible, which makes the on-interval of the MOSFET switch of the boost converter ultimately short. Due to this short on-interval, the parasitic junction capacitances of MOSFETs affect the performance of the power converter system. In this paper, the performance of the new converter is analytically and experimentally evaluated with consideration of the parasitic capacitance of switching devices.

Eco-friendly $(Na,K)NbO_3$ (NKN)-based piezoelectric ceramic materials were fabricated by conventional ceramic method for shear mode piezoelectric energy harvesting application. $NKN-LiTaO_3$ (LT) based compositions were adopted for the high $d_{15}{\times}g_{15}$ which is proportional to harvested energy density. The composition $0.935(Na_{0.535}K_{0.485})NbO_3-0.065LiTaO_3$ was found to be lie on the boundary of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases. With reducing Ta content, the dielectric constant decreased gradually while maintaining high $d_{15}$, which resulted in increased $d_{15}{\times}g_{15}$. The composition $0.935(Na_{0.535}K_{0.485})NbO_3-0.065Li(Nb_{0.990}Ta_{0.010})O_3$ was found to possess excellent piezoelectric and electromechanical properties ($d_{15}{\times}g_{15}=29\;pm^2/N$, $d_{15}$ = 417 pC/N, $k_{15}$ = 0.55), and high curie temperature ($T_c=455^{\circ}C$).
This study presents a bio-chemical energy harvesting system which can generate electric power from bioorganic substance contained in vermicompost. It produced electricity by inoculating microbial fuel cell(MFC) with earthworm-composted food waste. The generated electricity was converted into usable voltage level for mobile electronics through power conditioning circuits. The implemented prototype showed $200{\mu}W$ of maximum output electric power, which successfully supplied a beacon device which continuously transmitted data to nearby smartphone without a battery. The proposed system can help develop portable or bio-mimetic energy supply for sustainable use with further improvement.

Electricity generation using fossil fuels has caused environmental pollution. To solve this problem, research on new renewable energy sources (solar, wind power, geothermal heat, etc.) to replace fossil fuels is ongoing. These devices are able to generate power consistently. However, they have many weaknesses, such as high installation costs and limits to possible setup environments. Therefore, an active study on piezoelectric harvesting technology that is able to surmount the limitations of existing energy technologies is underway. Piezoelectric harvesting technology uses the piezoelectric effect, which occurs in crystals that generate voltage when stress is applied. Therefore, it has advantages, such as a wider installation base and lower technological costs. In this study, a piezoelectric harvesting device imitating seaweed, which has a consistent motion caused by fluid, is used. Thus, it can regenerate electricity at sea or on a bridge pillar, which has a constant turbulent flow. The components of the device include circuitry, springs, an electric generator, and balancing and buoyancy elements. Additionally, multiphysics analysis coupled with fluid, structure, and piezoelectric elements is conducted using COMSOL Multiphysics to evaluate performance. Through this program, displacement and electric power were analyzed, and the actual performance was confirmed by the experiment.

With recent advanced in portable electric devices, wireless sensor, MEMS and bio-Mechanics device, the new typed power supply, not conventional battery but self-powered energy source is needed. Particularly, the system that harvests from their environments are interests for use in self powered devices. For very low powered devices, environmental energy may be enough to use power source. In the generality of cases, these energy harvesting systems are used in the piezoelectric materials as mechanisms to convert mechanical vibration energy into electric energy. Through the piezoelectric materials, the ambient vibration energy could be used to prolong the power supply or in the ideal case provide endless energy f9r the devices. Therefore, the piezoelectric power harvesting cantilever beam is developed. Also, the output voltage and power are predicted in this study. We also discuss the developing system of the piezoelectric energy scavenger. An experimental verification of the model is also performed to ensure its accuracy.

In this study, we attempted to harvest energy using water droplet based on Reverse Electro Wetting On Dielectric (REWOD) phenomenon between water droplet and dielectric surface without external bias. REWOD device can be fabricated via simple coating process, which is highly economic and easy. We believe that our system is well-suited for IoT(Internet of Things) embedded electronics that require low but consistent electricity. Moreover, our device can be integrated with window to generate electricity upon raindrops.

Battery has major drawbacks including its size and life expectancy, and environmental problem. As an alternative, energy harvesting is emerging as a potential solution to replace battery along with more energy-efficient IT devices. The idea of harnessing energy from our living environment is sustainable, semi-permanent, and eco-friendly. Also, unlike battery, energy harvester does not require much space to store energy. Therefore, energy harvesting can provide a better source of power for small, portable, and wireless devices. Among various ways of harvesting energy from our surroundings, triboelectricity is chosen due to its potential to be miniaturized, and efficient. Triboelectric effect occurs as two different materials with different polarity of charge separation come into contact through friction, and then become separated so that electric potential difference is achieved. In this research, such characteristic of triboelectricity is used as a way to convert ambient mechanical energy into electric energy.Series of recent researches have shown promising results that the triboelectric energy harvester can be simple and cost effective. However, sufficient electricity level required to operate mobile devices has not yet been achieved. In this research, our group focuses on the design and optimization of triboelectric energy harvesting device to enhance its output. By using maskless lithography to pattern Kapton film and silicon substrate, which is used as a mold for PDMS thin layer, and sputtering metal electrodes on each side, we fabricate and demonstrate different designs of triboelectric energy harvester that utilizes the contact electrification between a polymer thin film and a metal thin foil. In order to achieve optimized result, the output voltage and current are measured under diverse conditions, which include different surface structure and pattern, material, and the gap between layers.

The pollution problem of fossil energy sources has caused the development of green energy harvesting systems. Piezoelectric energy harvesting technology has been developed under those external environmental factors. A piezoelectric energy harvester can be defined as a device which transforms mechanical vibration or impact energy into electrical energy. Most researches have focused on bender structures. However, these have a limitation on energy efficiency because of the small effective electromechanical coupling factor, around 10%. Therefore, we should look for a new design for energy harvesting. A cymbal energy harvester can be a good candidate for the high-power energy harvester because it uses a high amplification mechanism using endcaps while keeping a higher electromechanical coupling factor. In this research, we focused on energy efficiency improvements of the cymbal energy harvester by changing the polarization direction, because the electromechanical coupling factor of the k33 mode and the k15 mode is larger than that of the k31 mode. Theoretically, we checked the cymbal harvester with radial polarization and it could obtain 6 times larger energy than that with the k31 direction polarization. Furthermore, we verified the theoretical expectation using the finite element method program. Consequently, we could expect a more efficient cymbal harvester with the radial polarization by comparing two polarization directions.
In this paper the tuned mass-damper-inerter (TMDI) is considered for passive vibration control and energy harvesting in harmonically excited structures. The TMDI couples the classical tuned mass-damper (TMD) with a grounded inerter: a two-terminal linear device resisting the relative acceleration of its terminals by a constant of proportionality termed inertance. In this manner, the TMD is endowed with additional inertia, beyond the one offered by the attached mass, without any substantial increase to the overall weight. Closed-form analytical expressions for optimal TMDI parameters, stiffness and damping, given attached mass and inertance are derived by application of Den Hartog's tuning approach to suppress the response amplitude of force and base-acceleration excited single-degree-of-freedom structures. It is analytically shown that the TMDI is more effective from a same mass/weight TMD to suppress vibrations close to the natural frequency of the uncontrolled structure, while it is more robust to detuning effects. Moreover, it is shown that the mass amplification effect of the inerter achieves significant weight reduction for a target/predefined level of vibration suppression in a performance-based oriented design approach compared to the classical TMD. Lastly, the potential of using the TMDI for energy harvesting is explored by substituting the dissipative damper with an electromagnetic motor and assuming that the inertance can vary through the use of a flywheel-based inerter device. It is analytically shown that by reducing the inertance, treated as a mass/inertia-related design parameter not considered in conventional TMD-based energy harvesters, the available power for electric generation increases for fixed attached mass/weight, electromechanical damping, and stiffness properties.
