  • To reduce the vibration of cable-stayed bridges, conventional magnetorheological (MR) damper control system (CMRDS), with separate power supply, sensors and controllers, is widely investigated. In this paper, to improve the reliability and performance of the control system, one adaptive MR damper control system (AMRDS) consisting of MR damper and piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) is proposed. According to piezoelectric effect, PEH can produce energy for powering MR damper. The energy is proportional to the product of the cable displacement and velocity. Due to the damping force changing with the energy, the new system can be adjustable to reduce the cable vibration. Compared with CMRDS, the new system is structurally simplified, replacing external sensor, power supply and controller with PEH. In the paper, taking the N26 cable of Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Bridge as example, the design method for the whole AMRDS is given, and simple formulas for PEH are derived. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control system, the performance is compared with active control case and simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case. It is shown that AMRDS is better than simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case, and still needed to be improved in comparison with active control case.

  • In this paper micro-scale solar energy harvesting system with a new MPPT control are proposed. In conventional solar energy harvesting systems, continuous perturbation techniques of the clock frequency or duty cycle of a power converter have been used to implement MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) control. In this paper, we propose a new MPPT technique to control the duty cycle of a power switch powering a power converter. The proposed circuit is designed in $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and the designed chip area including pads is $770{\mu}m{\times}800{\mu}m$.

  • In 2012, a new energy capturing method called TENG was suggested for energy harvesting applications. The TENG which captures electric energy in forms of friction or vibration has been researched as a new energy harvesting generation device. However, TENG works on rather high voltage and yields relatively low current, and this requires additional energy conversion and saving methods with either in semiconductive elements or circuitry for its application. Irregular generation from vibration sources rattle under 5Hz especially requires empirical studies. In this article, we suggest a electricity generation platform with energy storage methods. The platform is mounted on large sized animals, and the generation is actively monitored and controlled via Bluetooth-Low Energy to verify the platform.

  • With recent advanced in portable electric devices, wireless sensor, MEMS and bio-Mechanics device, the new typed power supply, not conventional battery but self-powered energy source is needed. Particularly, the system that harvests from their environments are interests for use in self powered devices. For very low powered devices, environmental energy may be enough to use power source. In the generality of cases, these energy harvesting systems are used in the piezoelectric materials as mechanisms to convert mechanical vibration energy into electric energy. Through the piezoelectric materials, the ambient vibration energy could be used to prolong the power supply or in the ideal case provide endless energy f9r the devices. Therefore, the piezoelectric power harvesting cantilever beam is developed. Also, the output voltage and power are predicted in this study. We also discuss the developing system of the piezoelectric energy scavenger. An experimental verification of the model is also performed to ensure its accuracy.

  • Piezoelectric energy harvesting technologies, which can be used to convert the electricity from the mechanical energy, have been developed in order to assist or power the wearable electronics. To realize non-toxic and biocompatible electronics, the lead-free (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Ti0.90Zr0.10)O3 (BCTZ) nanoparticles (NPs) are being studied with a great attention as flexible energy harvesting device. Herein, piezoelectric hybrid nanocomposites were fabricated using BCTZ NPs-embedded poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] matrix to improve the performance of flexible energy harvester. Output performance of the fabricated energy device was investigated by the well-optimized measurement system during the periodically bending and releasing motions. The generated open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current of the piezoelectric hybrid nanocomposite-based energy harvester reached up to ~15 V and ~1.1 ㎂, respectively; moreover, the instantaneous power of 3.5 ㎼ is determined from load voltage and current at the external load of 20 MΩ. This research is expected to cultivate a new approach to high-performance wearable self-powering electronics.

  • Since recent electronics technologies have been developed and they tend to spend huge amount of electrical power, self-powered electronics have been paid attention worldwide. To realize self-powered electronics, energy harvesting technology, which generally converts ambient energy into electrical energy, has to be introduced. Among numerous energy sources, mechanical, thermal, and electrostatic event would be of broad interest in field of energy harvesting. Here, this article introduces the promising alternative energy concepts of nanogenerator including piezoelectric, triboelectric, and hybrid types. With these nanogenerators, we are able to apply onto not only self-powered system, but expect these open green energy market.

  • This paper presents a low power boost converter using offset controlled Zero Current Sensor (ZCS) control for thermoelectric energy harvesting.[1] [5] Offset controlled ZCS uses adjustable pre-offset that is controled by 6bit code each connected gate of NMOS for switching. Offset controlled ZCS demonstrates an efficiency that is higher than using analog comparator ZCS and that is smaller area than using delay line ZCS. Experimentally, the offset controlled ZCS system consumes 10 times less power than analog comparator ZCS based system at similar performance.

  • Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes.

  • In this paper a photovoltaic energy harvesting charger with battery management circuit is proposed. The proposed circuit harvests maximum power from a solar cell by employing MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) control and charges an external capacitor battery with the harvested energy. The charging state of the battery is controlled according to the signals from the battery management circuit. The proposed circuit is designed in a 0.35um CMOS process technology and its functionality has been verified through extensive simulations. The maximum efficiency of the designed entire system is 84.8%, and the chip area including pads is $1350um{\times}1200um$.
