  • In Korea, more than 60% of the population lives in apartment buildings with wall structures that exhibit brittle behavior during earthquakes. Therefore, in recent performance-based seismic design, the selection of the energy dissipation coefficient for reinforced concrete (RC) walls in nonlinear dynamic analysis is very important. Previous experimental studies have reported that the main factors affecting the energy dissipation capacity of RC walls are the axial force ratio, the spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element, and the aspect ratio. The Architectural Institute of Korea and the Korea Concrete Institute proposed a concentrated plastic hinge model and the energy dissipation coefficient for each RC member in the guideline 「Nonlinear Analysis Model for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Building Structures, 2021.」 The proposed equation for the energy dissipation coefficient does not include the factors of axial force ratio and spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element. The aspect ratio is applied to the flexural plastic model, despite considering shear-dominated behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the effect of the aspect ratio according to the analysis model. In this study, the influence of each factor on the energy dissipation coefficient was analyzed by comparing the results of existing experimental research, nonlinear analysis using the fiber element model of a nonlinear analysis program(Perform 3D), and the energy dissipation coefficient proposed in the guideline. As the axial force ratio increased, the energy dissipation coefficient decreased, and as the spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element decreased, the energy dissipation coefficient increased. Additionally, as the aspect ratio increased, the energy dissipation coefficient tended to increase, with the aspect ratio showing the greatest influence.

  • In this paper the numerical method for the study of wave reflection from and transmission through submerged permeable breakwaters using the boundary element method is developed. The numerical analysis technique is based on the wave pressure function instead of velocity potential because it is difficult to define the velocity potential in the each region arising the energy dissipation. Also, the non-linear energy dissipation within the submerged porous structure is simulated by introducing the linear dissipation coefficient and the tag mass coefficient equivalent to the non-linear energy dissipation. For the validity of this analysis technique, the numerical results obtained by the present boundary element method are compared with those obtained by the other computation method. Good agreements are obtained and so the validity of the present numerical analysis technique is proved.

  • Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.

  • Although the influence of moisture content on the mechanical properties of concrete has been studied for a long time, research related to its influence on the damping and energy dissipation property of concrete structure is still very limited. In this paper, the relationship between damping property and moisture content of concrete using cyclic uniaxial compression is firstly presented, and the mechanism of the influence of moisture content on concrete damping and energy dissipation capacity is analyzed. Based on the experimental research, moisture-related damping and energy dissipation model is proposed. Results show that the dissipated energy of concrete and loss factor increase as the moisture content increasing. The energy dissipation coefficient reflecting the influence of stress level of concrete under cyclic load, decreases first and then increases as the moisture content increasing. The mechanism of moisture-related energy dissipation behavior can be divided into the reactive force of water, the development of the internal micro cracks and the pore water pressure. Finally, the proposed moisture-related damping and energy dissipation model are verified.

  • The interfacial bond strength of partially encased composite (PEC) structure tends to 0, therefore, the cast-in-place concrete theoretically cannot embody better composite effect than the fabricated structure. A total of 12 specimens were designed and experimented to investigate the energy dissipation and damage of fabricated PEC beam through unidirectional cyclic loading test. Because the concrete on both sides of the web was relatively independent, some specimens showed obvious asymmetric concrete damage, which led to specimens bearing torsion effect at the later stage of loading. Based on the concept of the ideal elastoplastic model of uniaxial tensile steel and the principle of equivalent energy dissipation, the energy dissipation ductility coefficient is proposed, which can simultaneously reflect the deformability and bearing capacity. In view of the whole deformation of the beam, the calculation formula of energy dissipation is put forward, and the energy dissipation and its proportion of shear-bending region and pure bending region are calculated respectively. The energy dissipation efficiency of the pure bending region is significantly higher than that of the shear-bending region. The setting of the screw arbors is conducive to improving the energy dissipation capacity of the specimens. Under the condition of setting the screw arbors and meeting the reasonable shear span ratio, reducing the concrete pouring thickness can lighten the deadweight of the component and improve the comprehensive benefit, and will not have an adverse impact on the energy dissipation capacity of the beam. A damage model is proposed to quantify the damage changes of PEC beams under cyclic load, which can accurately reflect the load damage and deformation damage.

  • In an effort to find the optimum porous of Taewoo through the mathematical model 2 - dimensional tank water experiment among the approached to a problem related to ocean engineering, this study analyzed the porosity by dividing it into 9 cases. As the wave penetrates through the longitudinal porous of the Taewoo model, it was found that there is a wave energy loss because of the phenomenon of the separation of the porous due to the eddy. Looking into the general tendency based on the wave-height meter (probe) data, it was found that the shorter wavelength and higher frequency area, the more reflection coefficients increased, but in contrast, the longer wavelength and lower frequency area, the transmission coefficients showed the increasing trend and energy dissipation was in a similar way with reflection coefficients. In addition, it was found that the bigger the porosity was, the narrower distribution range of reflection coefficients was, and the more its average value decreased. On the other hand the transmission coefficients in direct opposition to reflection was found to show the wider range and the more gradual increase in the average value as porosity was the bigger around the average value. In contrast, energy dissipation rate was found to increase linearly as porosity increased the more around the porosity of 0.2518 but it decreased gradually around the peak point. Through the above results, it is judged that the porous of optimum in the longitudinal direction of the Taewoo model perforated plate was about 2.6cm because it was found that the porosity which produced the lowest reflection and transmission coefficient and the highest energy dissipation. As a result of comparing this to the case where there was no porosity at all, it showed the function of wave absorbing about 31.60%.

  • Recently, as the interest in energy savings has increased, there has been increasing use of LED lighting, which is an eco-friendly device that replaces high energy consuming fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps. In the case of a high output LED, however, the life time is shortened due to deterioration caused by heat generation. As a solution to this problem, this paper evaluated the LED life extension effect by increasing the convective heat transfer coefficient of the heat sink surface for LED packaging. A roughing process was carried out using sandpaper and sand blasting. The changes in surface roughness and surface area after each surface treatment process were evaluated quantitatively and the convective heat transfer coefficient was measured. When sandblasting and sandpaper were used to roughen the aluminum surface, a higher convection heat transfer coefficient was obtained compared to the untreated case, and a high heat dissipation efficiency of 82.76% was obtained in the sandblast treatment. Therefore, it is expected that the application of heat dissipation to the heat sink will extend the lifetime of the LED significantly and economically by increasing the heat efficiency.

  • In this paper, a numerical simulation study was conducted on the seismic behavior and ductility demand of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems with partially self-centering hysteresis. Unlike fully self-centering systems, partially self-centering systems display noticeable residual displacement after unloading is completed. Such partially self-centering behavior has been observed in a number of recently researched self-centering structural systems with energy dissipation devices. It is thus of interest to examine the seismic performance such as ductility demand of partially self-centering systems. In this study, a modified flag-shaped hysteresis model with residual displacement is proposed to represent the hysteretic behavior of partially self-centering structural systems. A parametric study considering the effect of variations in post-yield stiffness ratio, energy dissipation coefficient, and residual displacement ratio on the displacement ductility demand of partially self-centering systems was conducted using a suite of 192 scaled ground motions. The results of this parametric study reveal that increasing the post-yield stiffness, energy dissipation coefficient or residual displacement ratio of the partially self-centering systems generally leads to reduced ductility demand, especially for systems with lower yield strength.

  • A novel type of buckling restrained brace with built-up angle steel was developed. The core segment was formed by welding angle steel, and the middle section was reduced by cutting technology to solve the problem that the end of BRB was easy to buckle. The experimental program has been undertaken to study the performance of BRBs with different unbonded materials (silica gel, kraft paper) and different filler materials (ordinary concrete, full light-weight concrete). Four specimens were designed and fabricated for low cycle reciprocating load tests to simulate horizontal seismic action. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, tension-compression unbalance coefficient and other mechanical parameters were compared and analyzed. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to conduct numerical simulation, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental phenomena. The test results indicated that the hysteretic curve of each specimen was plump. Sustaining cumulative strains of each specimen was greater than the minimum value of 200 required by the code, which indicated the ductility of BRB was relatively good. The energy dissipation coefficient of the specimen with silica gel as unbonded material was about 13% higher than that with kraft paper. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.

  • The present study numerically investigated the influence of the waveform distribution on the tsunami-vegetation interaction using a non-reflected wave generation system for various tsunami waveforms in a two-dimensional numerical wave tank. First, it was possible to determine the wave attenuation mechanism due to the tsunami-vegetation interaction from the spatial waveform, flow field, vorticity field, and wave height distribution. The combination of fluid resistance in the vegetation and a large gap and creates a vortex according to the flow velocity difference in and out of the vegetation zone. Thus, the energy of a tsunami was increasingly reduced, resulting in a gradual reduction in wave height. Compared to existing approximation theories, the double volumetric ratio of the waveform increased the reflection coefficient of the tsunami-vegetation interaction by 34%, while decreasing the transfer coefficient and energy attenuation coefficient by 25% and 13%, respectively. Therefore, the hydraulic characteristics of a tsunami is highly likely to be underestimated if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied for the tsunami.
