  • Herbal medicine is the use of medicinal plants for prevention and treatment of diseases: it ranges from traditional and popular medicines of every country to the use of standardized and tritated herbal extracts. Generally cultural rootedness enduring and widespread use in a traditional medical system may indicate safety, but also efficacy of treatments, especially in herbal medicine where tradition is almost completely based on remedies containing active principles at very low and ultra low concentrations or relying on magical-energetic principles. The efficacy and safety assessments of medicines, whether modern or herbal, invariably encounter challenges or problems during the course of pre-clinical and clinical research. Some of the challenges in evidence-based herbal medicinal research are unique, and the researcher must be cognizant of them in order to safeguard the quality of the data obtained. Key challenges are: the quality of raw materials; appropriateness of biological/pharmacological activity assessment methodology, and data interpretation; standardization methodology; pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of active constituents and metabolites; clinical dosage formulation/production; and clinical study designs and outcome measures.

  • ITO films were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate substrate by a dc reactive magnetron sputtering using rf bias without substrate heater and post-deposition thermal treatment. The dependency of rf substrate bias on plasma sputter processing was investigated to control energetic particles and improve ITO film properties. The substrate was applied negative rf bias voltage from 0 to -80 V. The composition of indium, tin, and oxygen atoms is strongly depended on the rf substrate bias. Oxygen deficiency is the highest at rf bias of -20 V. The electrical and optical properties of ITO films also are dominated obviously by negative rf bias.

  • U. S. and NATO allies have recently increased their emphasis on reducing the hazards of tactical munitions that contain energetic materials and actively started many investigations on Insensitive munitions(IM) of missile propulsion. All subcomponents of rocket motor should be properly designed and understood to increase IM properties. Insensitive propellant, motor case, ignitor and mitigation devices are important components of IM technologies of rocket motors.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide fundamental information on the subject of high explosives not only to the explosive scientist but also to the chemical engineer. Technologies for the development of high explosives are divided into 5 areas: (1) synthesis of new energetics, (2) preparation of functional explosives, (3) formulation study of plastic bonded explosives, (4) application of high explosives to munitions, (5) demilitarization process. This paper outlines the basic technologies need to understand the high explosives.

  • The combustion pressure and thrust of aft-igniter were measured to investigate the characteristics of ignition charge. Granule and pellet shape ignition charge of $BKNO_3$ and MTV(Magnesium-Teflon-Viton) were used for igniters. Ignitions with granule charges show abrupt increases of combustion pressure and thrust compared to those of pellet charge. $BKNO_3$ igniter shows higher combustion pressure than MTV igniter due to higher combstion rate. Mg particle size affects the combustion pressure of MTV igniter.

  • Intramolecular ${\pi}-{\pi}$ and ${\sigma}-{\pi}$ interactions are omnipresent for numerous energetic and structural phenomena in nature, and the exact description of these nonbonding interactions plays an important role in the accurate prediction of the three-dimensional structures for numerous interesting molecular systems such as protein folding and polymer shaping. We have selected two prototype molecular systems for benchmarking calculations of intramolecular ${\pi}-{\pi}$ and ${\sigma}-{\pi}$ interactions. Accurately describing conformational energy of such systems requires highly elaborate but very expensive ab initio methods such as coupled cluster singles, doubles, and (triples) (CCSD(T)). Our calculations reveal a double hybrid density functional incorporating dispersion correction (B2PLYP-D) that agrees excellently with the CCSD(T) results, indicating that B2PLYP-D can serve as a practical method of choice.

  • The interfacial electronic structure of a bilayer of chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) and pentacene grown on indium tin oxide (ITO) has been studied using synchrotron radiation-excited photoelectron spectroscopy. The energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of the pentacene layer and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of the ClAlPc layer (EDHOMO - EALUMO) was determined and compared with that of C60/pentacene bilayers. The EDHOMO - EALUMO of a heterojunction with ClAlPc was found to be 1.4 eV, while that with C60 was 1.0 eV. This difference is discussed in terms of the difference of the ionization energy of each acceptor materials. We also obtained the complete energy level diagrams of ClAlPc/pentacene/ITO and C60/pentacene/ITO, respectively.

  • Discussions on this paper are related to the effects of organic materials to treeing phenomena of low density polyethylene. As additives, 11 kinds of organic compounds are selected by considering the respective features such as melting point, boiling point, electron affinity as well as molecular structure, and then the specimens of low density polyethylene are prepared by blending with 10wt% of the selected additives. For the comparison of effectiveness of treeing resistance and interpretation of the mechanism of compounds as treeing retardants, several investigations such as the tree acceleration test, the prestressed test and the measurement of internally occurred partial discharge are carried out. As the results, meta-Cresol is regard as the most effective retardant among those, and it is supposed that this aromatic compound to be comprised of radical having large electron affinity has strong capability to accept energetic electron to prevent or delay the growth of discharge streamer. Furthermore, by activating partial discharge at the wall of tree pit through the function of trapped electron at this material, the gas pressure in the pit is increased up to prevent the growth of streamer.

  • We have investigated the structures, the energetic, and the nanomechanics of the single-wall boron-, aluminum-, and gallium-nitride nanotubes using atomistic simulations based on the Tersoff-type potential. The Tersoff-type potential for the III-nitride materials has effectively described the properties of the III-nitride nanotubes. Nanomechanics of boron-, aluminum-, and gallium-nitride nanotubes under the compression loading has been investigated and their Young's moduli were calculated.
