  • An unbraced cantilever beam subjected to loads which cause bending about the major axis may buckle in a flexuraltorsional mode by deflecting laterally and twisting. For the efficient design of these structures, design engineers require a simple accurate equation for the elastic flexural-torsional buckling load. Existing solutions for the flexural-torsional buckling of cantilever beams have mainly been derived by numerical methods which are tedious to implement. In this research, an attempt is made to derive a theoretical equation by the energy method using different buckled shapes. However, the results of a finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis reveal that the buckled shapes for the lateral deflection and twist rotation are different for cantilever beams. In particular, the buckled shape for the twist rotation also varies with the section size. In light of these findings, the finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis was then used to derive simple accurate equations for the elastic buckling load and moment for cantilever beams subjected to end point load, uniformly distributed load and end moment. The results are compared with previous research and it was found that the equations derived in this study are accurate and simple to use.

  • Diverse strengthening methods for reinforced concrete are applied to real structures with a variety of materials. On the other hand, only external prestressing is used for strengthening damaged prestressed concrete girders. But the end brackets for external prestressing are hard to design and to manufacture, the magnitude of prestressing is limited when applied to real structures. The current end brackets are not clearly understood in load transmitting mechanisms and they may damage the original girder by drilling during construction. And also the designed welding area of the current bracket is insufficient to support the high load. The problems of current end bracket are solved in this study. And a new and improved end bracket is proposed and tested. The tested end bracket is similar to the end bearing bracket, but many supportting plates are addded to increase its welding length of the weakest point of the bracket. The increased welding length finally increases its load carrying capacity significantly.

Cutting forces, here, are modeled form the machanistic model of the ball end milling. To this end, we need undeformed chip thickness which is used for calculating chip load. It is derived form the z-map data of a CAD model. That is, chip load is the height difference between the cutting tool contact point and the workpiece at arbitrary position. • A method is developed for solving the elastica of cantilever beam subjected to a tip point load and uniform load. The Bernoulli-Euler differential equation of deflected beam is used. The Runge-Kutta method and the Regula Falsi method are used to perform the integration of the differential eqution and to determine the horizontal deflection, respectively. The horizontal and vertical deflections of the free end, and the free-end rotations are calculated for a range of parameters representing variations in tip point load and uniform load. All results are presented in nondimensional forms. And some typical elastic are also presented.

  • The accuracy of point load apparatus is depend on point to point coaxial fitting. Also, the estimation of applied point load using the pressure gauge frequently lead to erroneous results. An improved point load apparatus has been developed in this study by mounting linear bearing on polished support rod, and eccentric error of point to point axis has been sustained less than 0.1 mm even under series of extreme work load conditions. Two digital displacement gauges are attached to measure the distance from point to point with sample specimen. A load cell mounted at the end of upper conical platen measure the applied net load on sample instead of preassure gauge. Total of 107 point load tests has been achieved to assure the quality and performance of developed apparatus. This exercise turned out to be successful.

  • Model tests on free standing pile groups and piled footings with varying a pile spacing in two layered soils are carried out. The influence of pile cap on the behaviors of end bearing pile groups is analyzed by comparing the bearing behavior in piled footings with those in a single pile, a shallow footing(cap alone) and free standing pile groups. From the test results, it is found that the bearing characteristics of cap-soil-pile system are related with load levels and pile spacings. Before yield, the bearing resistance by cap is not fully mobilized, however, as the applied load increases, the bearing resistance of cap approaches to that of cap alone and settlement hardening occurs after yield due to the compaction caused by the contact pressure between cap and soil. By the cap-soil-pile interaction, shaft friction and point resistance of piles considerably increase with dependency of pile spacings. In two layered soil, the increasing effect of dilatancy in dense sandy soil adjacent to pile tips, increases the point resistance of pile.

  • This paper considers large deflection problem of a simply supported beam with variable are length subjected to a point load. The beam has one of its ends hinged and at a fixed distance from this end propped by a frictionless support over which the beam can slide freely. This highly nonlinear flexural problem is solved by elliptic-integral method and shooting-optimization technique, thereby providing independent checks on the new solutions. Because the beam can slide freely over the frictionless support, there is a maximum or critical load which the beam can carry and it is dependent on the position of the load. Interestingly, two possible equilibrium configurations can be obtained for a given load magnitude which is less than the critical value. The maximum arc-length was found to be equal to about 2.19 times the fixed distance between the supports and this value is independent of the load position.

  • In this paper, the estimation of dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness on fracture mode II in CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates in made. Dynamic ENF(End Notched Flexure) apparatus used in this paper is manufactured by suing Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. The static and impact load history in the CFRP specimen is measured by using manufactured dynamic ENF tester and 3-point bending test is carried out to find the load history. Also dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness can be found by using the J integral obrained from dynamic analysis in consideration of intertia-force effect.

  • Lateral-torsional buckling moment resistances of I-shaped stepped beams with continuous lateral top-flange bracing under a single point load on the top flange and negative end moments were investigated. Stepped beam factors and a moment gradient correction factor suggested by Park et al. (2003, 2004) were used to develop new lateral buckling formula for beam designs. From the investigation of finite element analysis (FEA), new lateral buckling formula of beams with singly or doubly stepped member changes and with continuous lateral top-flange bracing subjected to a single point load on top flange and end moments were developed. The new design equation includes the length-to-height ratio factor to account for the increase of lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance as the increase of length-to-height ratio of stepped beams. The calculation examples for obtaining lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance using the new design equation indicate that engineers should easily determine the buckling capacity of the stepped beams.
