This article discusses the issues of the estimated size and characteristics of irregular employment work force in Korea after IMF economic crisis in 1997. The issues of the estimated size of irregular employment work force originated from different concepts and its operationalizations among the labor economists, despite their utilization of the same labor force data, 'Economically Active Population Survey(EAPA)' collected from Korea National Statistical Office(KNSO). And the issues contribute toward the understandings of the irregular employment and the limits of the EAPA, despite its various usefulness. This article also describes the summary characteristics of irregular employment work force from both sides of labor supply and its demand. The major characteristics of irregular employment work force on the labor supply side appears in the concentration of social minorities, i.e. woman, the aged, lower educated and skilled populations. On the labor demand of irregular employment work force, the majority of it concentrated on the establishments under 10 employees, and probably the important incentives for irregular employment work force of the firms is labor cost efficiency. Finally, this article propose an alternative against the discrimination between the regular and irregular work force.
We evaluated industry growth and employment effects of every possible pairs of 22 manufacturing sectors and 16 regions (i.e, 352 region-sectors). We used annual data of manufacturing sectors from 2008 to 2014 for the evaluation. The evaluation comprises of two steps; We first find several region-sectors that outperform others with respect to the effects of industry growth and employment, which are measured by location quotient analysis, shift share method, employment to GDP ratio and employment elasticity. In addition, cross-efficiency analysis follows to classify region-sector pairs into two sub-categories : efficient region-sectors that deserve to hold the current level of investments and inefficient region-sectors where we should consider efficiency improvements. To examine the efficiency, R&D investment, employment size, and capital investment were used as input factors and production volume, added value, changes in employment size, changes in annual salary per capita were used as output factors. For region-sector pairs that have outstanding growth and employment effects but are inefficient, we employed a CCR DEA model and analyzed how much to adjust the values of input and output factors to improve the efficiency scores. The analysis results showed that inefficiency is mainly due to several factors such as R&D investment, changes in employment size and changes in annual salary per capita.
This study scrutinizes the common sense in the field of disability employment that the bigger the size of a firm, the lower the employment rate of people with disabilities. This common sense has been established by conventional cross-tabulation and multiple regression analyses without taking into account possible interactions between the sizes of firms and the industries in which they operate. This study shows that the distribution of the disability employment rate violates the linearity and homoscedasticity assumptions of the OLS. In an effort to find models that explain the data better, this study fits the OLS model, the weighted linear regression model, and the multinomial logit model as well as the path analysis which is meant to examine the relationships between firm size and other variables relevant to disability employment. The result shows that, when an interaction term between firm size and industry is added to the model, firm size does not have any significant effect on disability employment rate for those firms with 100 or more regular employees, to the contrary of the findings of prior studies. It also demonstrates that other factors such as job setting, the extent of helpfulness of disability employment employers perceive, employers' care for disability, and employers' awareness of disability policies may matter more than does firm size. This study proposes that future research and policy implementation for disability employment should pay no less attention to industry and other factors mentioned above than to firm size.

The growth and employment effects of R&D investment were analyzed according to business size, export value and manufacturing sectors so as to suggest improvement directions for effective industry policies. The effect of R&D investment was considered simultaneously from the two perspectives of growth and employment effect, and the causality analysis was carried out by using a path analysis. The result of the path analysis confirmed significant differences in the growth effect of R&D investment depending on business size. However, the effect of increasing employment was difficult to obtain statistically significant results for any various combinations of business size and export value. This is a mixture of directions for the effects of R&D investment on employment, which could be due to the failure to consider appropriate time lags between investment and effect. Efficiency analysis by industry sectors confirmed significant differences in efficiency depending on business size, but differences depending on export value were difficult to identify. In order to derive improvement policy by industry sector according to business size and export value, the direction of selective support policy and universal support policy was derived for six industry groups by combining the return to scale in the efficiency analysis and R&D concentration. Hirschman-Herfindahl index is used for calculating R&D concentration.
This project aims to provide information on organizations and characteristics of Korean designer fashion industry in order to improve employment environment in fashion designer brands. This study utilizes the questionnaires and interviews with designers or human resources managers in Korean designer brands for forms, size and way of employment. The result shows that firstly, the size of employment in fashion designer brands is almost operated by small-scale human resources. Secondly, It is researched that they recruit less than 10 temporary employees per a brand on average as a problem. Thirdly, there are differences in business according to forms of employment. As researched, permanent employees usually conduct in design, products plan and production management, but, temporary employees conduct as a business assistant and salespeople. Fourthly, it is revealed that average salaries for permanents in fashion designer brands are between 1,510,000 and 2,000,000 won as the most people said. Moreover, the average salaries for temporaries are similar with permanents' as between 1,170,000 and 1,500,000 won. In fifth, in terms of the ways for recruitment, the proportion of job seekers who find a job by nonscheduled admission and special employment is larger than other ways. Finally, as a result of a research on an employment contract, employees have written the employment contract with the brands.
This study examined the effects of the firm characteristics of the manufacturing industry on the female employment ratio. Three hypotheses regarding female employment ratio, were tested for 5,729 firms that could use financial data among the firms listed on the KOSPI from 2011 to 2019, in terms firm size, listing period, and foreign ownership. Follwing the analyses, three hypotheses were mostly adopted. It was found that as the size firm and foreign ownership ratio increased, the female employment ratio increased in the number of regular and permanent contract employees, fixed-term employees, and total employees. As for the listing period, the higher the value, the lower the female employment ratio in the number of regular and permanent contract employees, fixed-term employees, and total employees. These research results may be used as basic data for gender equal employment policies such as Affirmative Atcion for Gender Equal Employment.

This paper relates recent empirical research on the growth. Smaller and younger firms have been growing more quickly than larger and older firms, thus, generating proportionately more new jobs. It is not difficult to understand why small and medium firms receive so much attention. Because SMEs provide about 80 percent of private sector employment so SMEs performance is an important economic and social factor. Despite this, they are subject to higher risk and mobility than those at the large firms. This paper is analyzes the relationship between firm growth measured as growth in employment, sales and production and firms age, size and R&D investment. The growth and its relationship with the determinants is linked to industrial policy in Korea. Empirical results are based on an unbalanced panel data covering period 1999-2002. Results show significant relationship between growth, size and age of firm.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine factors affecting the burden on employment of occupational health care providers as well as to develop strategies to reduce burden on employment of them in the middle size manufacturing enterprises. Methods: The target population of this study was 123 managers working in the middle size manufacturing enterprises. The study questionnaires were selected, as theories and literature suggested, for explaining employment burden, general characteristics of participants and occupational health providers, general characteristics of companies, evaluation of occupational health provider's role and burden score. Results: The mean of employment burden score of manager was 2.2. There was a significant difference in the employment burden scores, manager's age and education, and occupational health provider's age, type of work, certification, and employment status. Also there was a negative relationship between employment burden scores and occupational health provider's role scores (need, role, satisfaction, and benefit). In the results of the standard multiple regression analysis, manager's need scores on occupational health providers were significant predictors of the employment burden scores. Conclusion: It is necessary to change the manager's perception to promote employment of occupational health providers.

This paper estimates the TFP in IT manufacturing (total factor productivity) by employment size of establishment and analyses the determinants of it. And the panel data is consisted of time series and cross section data of 4 employment size of establishment over $1990{\sim}2004$. During the period from 1991 to 1997 TFP increased positively irrespective of the employment size of establishment, but from 1998 to 2004 TFP increase rate turned negative except large size(more than 300) of establishment. TFP assume macro variables and policy variables as the determinants of IT manufacturing TFP. The analysis of whole size of establishment shows that sales growth rate is significantly positive, which makes us conclude that there is a teaming by doing effect and economy of scale. But some variables(i.e. IT capital stock, policy financing, and openness etc.) are significant in only a few models. So there may be different effect by employment size of establishment. In TFP determinants analysis by employment size of establishment, we find that coefficients of policy financing and openness variables are significantly positive. The larger employment size of establishment is, the larger scale economy is. And for large size(more than 300) establishment, IT capital stock helps propel the increase of the productivity.
We have analysed the impact of innovation on the employment in the Korean Service sector using KIS 2006 data. Our study is based on Bogliacino and Pianta (2010)'s model, which involves two main innovation strategies, technological competitiveness and cost competitiveness, as the main explanatory innovation variables for the employment dynamics. Empirical results show that an increase in demand was the strongest driver for an increase in employment in all four service sectors, including Science-based, specialized supplier, size and information intensive, and supplier dominated. Innovation strategy appeared to have a significant effect on employment at the firm level; Technological competitiveness showed a positive effect on employment in science based sector while cost competitiveness appeared to give a negative effect in specialized supplier sector. The firms in size and information intensive sector showed that increase in wages gives negative impact on their employment. However, cost competitiveness did not give any significant effect on employment dynamics of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector. This finding is different from the research of Bogliacino and Pianta (2010) on the European countries. One possible explanation would be that innovation strategy does not affect employment of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector since the level of innovativeness of these sectors in Korea fall behind that of European countries.
