The Effect of Nursing Students' Empathy and Communication skills on Major Immersion

  • This study was conducted to determine the relationship between nursing students' empathy, communication skills, and major immersion, and to identify factors that affect major immersion. The subjects of the study were 247 nursing students from one university in the G province, and data collection was conducted from November 20 to December 1, 2023. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The subject's empathy ability was 3.49 points, communication ability was 3.64 points, and major immersion was 3.61 points. Major immersion has a positive correlation with empathy and communication ability, and the factors affecting major immersion are major satisfaction and communication ability, with an explanatory power of 42.9%. To improve nursing students' immersion in their major, it is necessary to set the direction of learning activities and develop and apply various extracurricular programs.

Factors Affecting Nursing Students' Communication Skills (간호대학생의 의사소통능력에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • This study aims to investigate factors that affect nursing students' communication skills. For the study, 232 nursing students in a certain region were surveyed from September to October 2020. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. As a result, empathy, self-acceptance, and interpersonal competence were found to have a significant effect on the students' communication skills with an explanatory power of 50.7%. As for the relationship between general characteristics and communication skills, variations were seen due to gender (F=-3.86, p=.000) and satisfaction with college life (F=3.02, p=.019). Also, self-acceptance (r=.346, p<.001), empathy (r=.531, p<.001), and interpersonal competence (r=.680, p<.001) had a statistically significant positive correlation with communication skills. In conclusion, to improve the communication skills of nursing students, it is necessary to have specialized communication programs that reflect the curriculum and also programs that help increase empathy and interpersonal competence based on the gender of the student.

The Effect of an Empathy Education Program on Nursing Students' Empathy Ability, Interpersonal Ability, and Caring (간호대학생을 위한 공감교육 프로그램이 공감능력, 대인관계 능력 및 돌봄에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of an empathy education program for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The study employed a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 46 nursing students were voluntarily recruited by convenience sampling from senior nursing students from the nursing department of K college in I city, Korea. Participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group of 23 and a control group of 23. The experimental intervention (empathy education program) was conducted from April 19 to May 6, 2016 and consisted of 150-minute sessions, twice a week, for 3 weeks for a total of 15 hours. Results: Participants demonstrated improvements in perspective taking in cognitive empathy, improved empathic concern in emotional empathy, and improved communicative empathy. Analysis of reflective writings identified four theme clusters regarding communicative empathy: improvement of empathic expression, experiencing comfort and healing, improvement of interpersonal relationships, and experience of conflict resolution. Improved interpersonal ability and caring were also identified. Conclusion: The empathy education program improved cognitive, emotional and communicative empathy, and interpersonal skills and care, which are all necessary qualities for nurses.

The Influence of Empathy and Leadership on Happiness in Nursing College Students (간호대학생의 공감과 리더십이 행복감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was attempted to find out the effect of empathy and leadership of nursing college students on happiness. For this study, from November to December 2020, 142 students were participated from C University in U City, using self reported questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. As results of this study, it was revealed that there was a significant positive correlation between the happiness of nursing students on empathy and leadership(r=.424, p<.001, r=.635, p<.001). Also, the factors affecting the happiness of nursing students were personality(β=-0.284, p<.001), health status(β=-0.375, p<.001, β=-0.178, p<.001), empathy(β=0.351, p<.001) and leadership(β=0.133, p=.039) with a total explanatory power of 58.1%. As the results of this study, in order to increase the happiness of nursing students, it is necessary to develop their empathy skills and leadership. The specific strategies are to develope and apply special programs to develop the empathy skills and leadership.

A Study on the Effects of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practicum Using Storytelling

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the empathy, communication efficacy, and communication skills of nursing students through a psychiatric nursing practice program using storytelling by allowing the students to immerse in the narratives and identify themselves with the main characters with mental illness. This study is a single group pretest-posttest design that applied psychological nursing practice using storytelling to 46 nursing students from a local university in Korea and evaluated its effectiveness. Data analysis was performed by a paired t-test to compare the effects of the participants' empathy, communication self-efficacy, and therapeutic communication ability using SPSS 21.0 program. The results showed that psychiatric nursing practice using storytelling had an effect on the empathy (t=3.565, p=.001) and communication self-efficacy (t=2.320, p=.025) of nursing students. Based on these results, psychiatric and mental health clinical practice curriculums should be developed to improve nursing students' understanding of mental disorders and develop their communication ability with patients.

The Effects of Right Practice and Self-Concept on Social Skills of Adolescents (청소년의 권리실제와 자아개념이 사회적 기술에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is intended to identify the difference in social skills among adolescent students, by grade gender, rights practice, and self-awareness. It will raise awareness of the importance of the rights of adolescents and provide basic data of guaranteed rights for adolescents and social skills. Using questionnaires, a 569 adolescents, in four middle and high schools in Seoul and the Capital Area, were analyzed. The study results were as follows: first, females showed higher empathy skills than males did in social skills. In the case of male adolescents, self-control skills among social skills, was higher than those of females. Second, practice for rights and self-concept had positive influences on social skills. The higher the practice for rights, the higher cooperation, assertiveness, empathy, and self-control the adolescents had. The more positive self-concept of physical appearance, gymnastic ability, friends, and honesty, trust and value, indicated a higher assertiveness. The result implied that the adolescents' practice for their rights, self-concept, and social skills were highly correlated with one another, and adequate practice for their rights and positive self-concept had influences on their social skills. Based on the results, in order for adolescents with a low level of social skills to have a satisfactory social life, they should be encouraged to practice their own rights in the right direction and to acquire positive self-concept in the future.

Mediating Effect of Empathy in the Relationship between Communication Skills and Interpersonal Relationship of MZ Generation Nursing Students (MZ세대 간호대학생의 의사소통능력과 대인관계유능성의 관계에서 공감능력의 매개효과)

  • This is a descriptive research study to confirm the mediating effect of empathy in the relationship between communication skills and interpersonal relationship of MZ generation nursing students. The subjects of this study were 129 nursing students born in 1981 to 2006, corresponding to the MZ generation, and the data collection period was from May 20 to July 30, 2023. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program, and the mediating effect of empathy was tested by Baron and Kenny's three-step mediating effect verification procedure, and Sobel test was conducted to test the statistical significance of the mediating effect. As a result of the analysis, communication skills (β=.45, p<.001) and empathy (β=.18, p=.008) had a significant effect on interpersonal relationship. These variables were found to have 48.4% explanatory power for interpersonal relationship. Empathy had a partial mediating effect (z=2.39, p=.016) in the relationship between communication skills and interpersonal relationship. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the MZ generation familiar with the non-face-to-face culture that will be in charge of future nursing and to develop effective programs to improve their interpersonal relationship.

Effects of Empathy, Communication skills and Resilience on the Adaptation of Clinical Practice in Nursing College Student (간호대학생의 공감능력과 의사소통능력, 회복탄력성이 임상실습적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was attempted to provide basic data for preparing a learning strategy for effective clinical practice education by examining the effects of empathy, communication ability, and resilience on adaptation to clinical practice for nursing students. Participants in this study were 244 nursing students from 3 universities in B city. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0 program with real number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The subjects' empathy ability was 3.49±.44 points, communication ability 3.86±.85 points, resilience 3.63±.56 points, and clinical practice adaptation 3.63±.52 points. Factors affecting adaptation to clinical practice were empathy, communication ability, and resilience, and the explanation power was 39.9%. Through the results of this study, it is necessary to prepare an educational program to improve empathy, communication ability and resilience that affect the adaptation to clinical practice of nursing students.

Development and Validation of a Scale to Measure Engineering Empathy (공학적 공감능력 검사도구 개발 및 타당화 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and validate an Engineering Empathy Instrument. Engineering empathy is defined as the ability that encompasses the following three qualities, a skill to interpret social issues and phenomenon that may occur in the process of interactions between human beings and engineering systems, a practical orientation that enables one to take stakeholders' perspectives to carry out an engineering project, and a professional way of being that acknowledges empathic skills and associated practice orientations. Based on this notion, we develop a scale to measure engineering empathy and have surveyed 429 engineering students. Evidence for the validity and reliability of the scale is presented. In conclusion, we find that engineering empathy can be measured and conceptualized as three domains: a Learnable Skill (ELS), a Practical Orientation (EPO), and a Professional Way (EPW). We also find that sophomores show the highest level of engineering empathy as compared with other graders. While students accumulate technical knowledge, their understanding about engineering in social and interpretational contexts gets weakened. This implies that engineering education necessarily emphasizes the impacts of engineering solutions in interpersonal, societal, technologies, and environmental contexts.
