We successfully fabricated OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) with Al cathodes electrode deposited by the DC magnetron sputtering. The effects of a controlled Al cathode layer of an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)/blended single polymer layer (PVK Bu:PBD:dye)/Al light emitting diodes are described. The PVK (Poly(N-vinylcarbazole)) and Bu-PBD (2-(4-biphenyl-phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) are used hole transport polymer and electron transport molecule respectively. We found that both current injection and electroluminescence output are significantly different with a variable DC sputtering power. The difference is believed to be due to the influence near the blended polymer layer/cathode interface that results from the DC power and H$\sub$2//O in a chamber. And DC sputtering deposition is an effective way to fabricate Al electrodes with pronounced orientational characteristics without damage occurring to metal-organic interface during the sputtering deposition.

The performance of three-layered organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was investigated using TPD hole-transport and injection layers, Teflon-AF, and the electron-injection layer of $Li_2CO_3$ and LiF. The OLEDs were manufactured in a structure of TPD/$Alq_3$/LiF, TPD/$Alq_3$/$Li_2CO_3$, and AF/$Alq_3$/LiF using low-molecular organic materials. In three different three-layered OLEDs, it was found that the device with the TPD/$Alq_3$/LiF structure shows higher performance in maximum luminance, and maximum external quantum efficiency compared to those of the device with TPD/$Alq_3$/$Li_2CO_3$ and TPD/$Alq_3$/LiF by 35% and 17%, and 193% and 133%, respectively. It is thought that the combined LiF/Al cathode contributes to a reduced work function and improves an electrical conduction mechanism due to the electron injection rather than the hole transport, which then increases a recombination rate of charge carriers.
We have studied an organic layer and semitransparent Al electrode thickness dependent optical properties and microcavity effects for top-emission organic light-emitting diodes. Manufactured top-emission device structure is Al(100nm)/TPD(xnm)/Alq(ynm)/LiF(0.5nm)/Al(25nm). While a thickness of total organic layer was varied from 85nm to 165n, a ratio of those two layers was kept to be about 2:3. Semitransparent Al cathode was varied from 20nm to 30nm for the device with an organic layer total thickness of 140nm. As the thickness of total organic layer increases, the emission spectra show a shift of peak wavelength from 490nm to 580nm, and the full width at half maxima from 90nm to 35nm. The emission spectra show a blue shift as the view angle increases. Emission spectra depending on a transmittance of semitransparent cathode show a shift of peak wavelength from 515nm to 593nm. At this time, the full width at half maximum was about to be a constant of 50nm. With this kind of microcavity effect, we were able to control the emission spectra from the top-emission organic light-emitting diodes.
Organic electroluminescence devices were made from 1,4-bis-(9-anthrylvinyl)benzene (AVB) and 1,4-bis-(9-aminoanthryl)benzene (AAB) anthracene derivatives. Device structure was ITO/AVB/PANI(EB)/Al (multi-layer device) and ITO/AAB:DCM/Al(single-layer device). In these devices, AVB, polyaniline(emeraldine base) (PANI(EB)) and AAB were used as the emitting material. 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-p-(dimethylamino)styryl-4H -pyran(DCM) was used as red fluorescent dopant. We studied change of fluorescence wavelength with concentration of DCM doped in AAB. The ionization potential (IP) and optical band gap (Eg) were measured by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectrum. We compared with difference of emitting wavelength between photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectrum. In case of the multi-layer device, PANI and AVB EL spectra have similar wave pattern to each PL spectrum and when PAM and AVB were used at the same time, and multi-layer device showed that a balanced recombination and radiation kom PANI and AVB. In case of the single-layer device, with the increase of DCM concentration, the blue emission decreases and red emission increases. This indicates that DCM was excited by the energy transfer from AAB to DCM or the direct recombination at the dopant sites due to carrier trapping, or both. The device with $1.0wt\%$ DCM concentration gave white light.
Built-in voltage in organic light-emitting diodes was studied using modulated photocurrent technique ambient conditions. From the bias voltage-dependent photocurrent, built-in voltage of the device is determined. The applied bias voltage when the magnitude of modulated photocurrent is zero corresponds to a built-in voltage. Built-in voltage in the device is generated due to a difference of work function of the anode and cathode. A device was made with a structure of anode/$Alq_3$/cathode to study a built-in voltage. ITO was used as an anode, and Al and LiAl were used as a cathode. A layer thickness of Al and LiAl were 100nm. Obtained built-in voltage is about 1.0V in the Al layer was used as a cathode. The obatined built-in voltage is about 1.6V in the LiAl layer was used as a cathode. The result of built-in voltage is dependent of cathode. We can see that the built-in voltage increase up to 0.4V when the LiAl layer was used as the cathode. These results correspond to the work function of LiAl which is lower than that of Al. As a result, the barrier height for an electron injection from the cathode to the organic layer could be lowered when the LiAl was used as a cathode.
Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) are emerging as next-generation displays owing to their high color purity, wide color gamut, and solution processability. Enhancing the efficiency of QD-LEDs involves preventing non-radiative recombination mechanisms, such as Auger and interfacial recombination. Generally, ZnO serves as the electron transport layer, which is known for its higher mobility compared to that of organic semiconductors and can lead to excessive electron injection. Some of the injected electrons pass through the quantum dot emissive layer and undergo non-radiative recombination near or within the organic hole transport layer (HTL), resulting in HTL degradation. Therefore, the implementation of electron blocking layers (EBLs) is essential; however, studies on all-solution-processed inverted InP QD-LEDs are limited. In this study, poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) is introduced as an EBL to mitigate HTL degradation and enhance the emission efficiency of inverted InP QD-LEDs. Using a single-carrier device, PVK was confirmed to effectively inhibit electron overflow into the HTL, even at extremely low thicknesses. The optimization of the PVK thickness also ensured minimal disruption of the hole-injection properties. Consequently, a 1.5-fold increase in the maximum luminance was achieved in the all-solution-processed inverted InP QD-LEDs with the EBL.

Over the past several years, Colloidal core/shell type quantum dots lighting-emitting diodes (QDLEDs) have been developed for the future of optoelectronic applications. An inverted-type quantum-dot light-emitting-diode (QDLED), employing low work function organic material polyethylenimine ethoxylated(PEIE) (<10 nm)[1] modified ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) as electron injection and transport layer, was fabricated by all solution processing method, instead of electrode in the device. The PEIE surface modifier incorporated on the top of the ZnO NPs film, facilitates the enhancement of both electorn injection into the CdSe-ZnS QD emissive layer by lowering the workfunction of ZnO from 3.58eV to 2.87eV and charge balance on the QD emitter. In this inverted QDLEDs, blend of poly (9,9-di-n-octyl-fluorene-alt-benzothiadiazolo) and poly(N,N'-bis(4-butylphenyl)-N,N'-bis(phenyl)benzidine] are used as hole transporting layer (HTL) to improve hole transporting property. At the operating voltage of 7.5 V, the QDLED device emitted spectrally orange color lights with high luminance up to 11110 cd/m2, and showed current efficiency of 2.27 cd/A.[2]

We have carried out the fabrications of a barrier layer on a polyethersulfon (PES) film and organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on a plastic substrate by means of atomic layer deposition (ALD). Simultaneous deposition of 30 nm $AlO_x$ film on both sides of the PES film gave a water vapor transition rate (WVTR) of $0.062 g/m^2/day (@38^{\circ}C,\;100%\;R.H.)$. Further, the double layer of 200 nm $SiN_x$ film deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and 20 nm $AlO_x$ film by ALD resulted in a WVTR value lower than the detection limit of MOCON. We have investigated the OLED encapsulation performance of the double layer using the OLED structure of ITO / MTDATA (20 nm) / NPD (40 nm) / AlQ (60 nm) / LiF (1 nm) / Al (75 nm) on a plastic substrate. The preliminary life time to reach 91% of the initial luminance $(1300 cd/m^2)$ was 260 hours for the OLED encapsulated with 100 nm of PECVD-deposited $SiN_x$ and 30 nm of ALD-deposited $AlO_x$.
