The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building materials is one of great concerns due to maintain airtight condition of a building to reduce energy consumption, and it causes the deterioration of indoor air quality. Therefore, the emission characterization of VOCs from building materials is necessary to improve indoor air quality. Emission characteristics of VOCs from a plywood flooring that is one of the most commonly used materials in an under-heating system, and from an adhesive that is generally used to stick a plywood flooring to a concrete floor were investigated using an emission chamber test in this study. It was found that the VOCs emission factor was dependent upon and proportional to indoor temperature, and the emission characteristics were closely related to the existing places and conditions of VOCs sources inside the building materials. Maximum emission factors of hexane and toluene from building materials were generally observed at the beginning, however, only that of toluene from a plywood flooring was shown after 6 hours from the beginning. It could be considered that the existing place and condition of toluene source inside a plywood flooring could influence on the VOCs emission. From this study, bake-out time more than 72 hours could be recommended before moving in to avoid the exposure to high concentration of VOCs emitted from an under-heating system.

According to domestic air pollutant emission statistics, a considerable amount of air pollutants is generated by ships. Therefore, various policies are being implemented to limit air pollutant emissions from ships and improve the air quality in ports. In addition, international conventions are carried out for the prevention of marine pollution by ships. However, because few studies and experiments have been conducted on the measurement of air pollutants emitted from actually operating ships, this study presented a method and possibility for evaluating air pollutant emissions from a 9,196GT ship actually operating using a portable emission measurement system (PEMS). A difference in emission occurred depending on the RPM and load, and the emission of NOX was 497-2,060ppm, CO2 was 1.55-6.9%, and CO was 0.002-0.14%. The emission specified in the shop test provided by the engine manufacturer differed from the actual emission measured. This study proved that the maximum emission of each air pollutant generated in the entire sailing section of the ship was included in the PEMS measurement range, and the possibility of using PEMS for ships within 10,000GT was verified.

In this paper, we studied about the radiated emission of EFT(Electrical Fast Transient)/Burst signal, referenced IEC-61000-4-4 of the international EMC standard and its effect on EUT(Equipment Under the Test) when EFT/Burst signal (Conducted noise) induced on a power cable to EUT. Firstly, we set up test sample by the standard and +4 kV standard signal is induced by EFT/Burst signal generator with 1 m length power cable for 1 minute. Consequently, we found not only induced EFT/Burst signal along power line, but also directly radiated emission signal from EFT/Burst signal generator (Radiated emission noise of EFT/Burst). The radiated emission signal of EFT/Burst was 30 dB which is higher than limit of CISPR 22 which is international EMC standard. Moreover, we measured the electric field strength by changing distance from maximum radiated emission point to electric field strength tester. As a result, this electric field strength was 23 V/m which is higher than international EMC standard test level(CISPR 24). Therefore, it was confirmed that the probability of malfunction may be high when radiated emission of EFT/Burst noise exists near the EUT.

The thermal fatigue crack(TFC) is one of the life-limiting mechanisms at the nuclear power plant operating conditions. In order to evaluate the structural integrity, various non-destructive test methods such as radiographic test, ultrasonic test and eddy current are used in the industrial field. However, these methods have restrictions that defect detection is possible after the crack growth. For this reason, acoustic emission testing(AET) is becoming one of powerful inspection methods, because AET has an advantage that possible to monitor the structure continuously. Generally, every mechanism that affects the integrity of the structure or equipment is a source of acoustic emission signal. Therefore the noise filtering is one of the major works to the almost AET researchers. In this study, acoustic emission signal was collected from the pipes which were in the successive thermal fatigue cycles. The data were filtered based on the results from previous experiments. Through the data analysis, the signal characteristics to distinguish the effective signal from the noises for the TFC were proven as the waveform difference. The experiment results provide preliminary information for the acoustic emission technique to the continuous monitoring of the structure failure detection.

Recently, an emission test procedure using a portable emissions measurement system(PEMS) has received much attention as an effective means of controlling real driving emissions from light-duty diesel vehicles. The PEMS-based test procedure will be implemented from 2017 in Europe and Korea as a complementary test procedure for certification and regulation. In the present study, on-road NOx emissions were measured for four kinds of Euro 5 Korean light-duty diesel vehicles under real driving conditions, including urban, rural, and motorway test routes. The real driving emission characteristics were evaluated using both a moving averaging window(MAW) and the weighted emission method(WEM). The evaluated NOx emission results (under real driving conditions) from the MAW and WEM showed similar tendencies for the test vehicles and routes, while exceeding the certification emission limit by 1.8~8.5 and 2.0~10.6 times, respectively.

The goal of this research is to understand the NOx emission in direct injected diesel engine with premixed hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen fuel was supplied into the test engine through the intake pipe. Amount of hydrogen-supplemented fuel was 70 % basis on heating value of the total input fuel. The effects of intake air temperature and exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on NOx emission were studied. The intake air temperatures were varied from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$ by using liquid nitrogen. Also, the exhaust gas was recirculated to the intake manifold and the amount of exhaust gas was controlled by the valve. The major conclusions of this work include: ( i ) nitrogen concentrations in the intake pipe were increased by 30% and cylinder gas temperature was decreased by 24% as the intake air temperature were changed from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$; ( ii ) NOx emission per unit heating value of supplied fuel was decreased by 45% with same decrease of intake air temperature; and (iii) NOx emission was decreased by 77% with 30% of EGR ratio. Therefore, it may be concluded that EGR is effective method to lower NOx emission in hydrogen fueled engine.

In Korea, the number of recreational vehicle (RV) has been increased dramatically recent year. Now there are emission regulations for RV which include pollutants such as CO, HC, NOx, PM. However considering the trend of preferring RV, there needs more strict strategies to control emissions from this type of vehicle. For that reason, we studied emission characteristics of RV and provided basic emission data to evaluate the contribution of RV to the total air pollutant emissions and to establish RV emission management plan. A total of 21 RV were tested on the chassis dynamometer system ranging from small to large engine displacement by vehicle speed, fuel types, regulations and fuel efficiency in order to investigate the characteristics of CO, HC, NOx and PM. For the test modes, 10 different driving speed modes and CVS-75 mode were used. On the basis of this study, RV pollutants emission factors and management strategies will be proposed.

An experiment was conducted with a common-rail direct injection diesel engine operated with neat dimethyl ether (DME). In order to investigate the effect of combustion characteristics and emission reduction of DME fuel, the experiment was performed at various injection pressure from 35 MPa to 50MPa. Also, the exhaust emissions from the engine were compared with that of diesel fuel. In this work, Cooled EGR was implemented to reduce $NO_x$ exhaust emissions. The results showed that DME has shorter ignition delay than that of diesel fuel. Despite of the increased $NO_x$ emissions with DME at an equal engine power compared to the case of fueling diesel, the engine emitted zero soot emissions all over the operating conditions in this work. $NO_x$ emission can be decreased greatly by adopting 45% of EGR while maintaining zero soot emission. Judging from the result of engine test, DME is a suitable fuel for common-rail diesel engine due to it's clean emission characteristics.

Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the characteristics of the emission reduction were tested using a engine dynamometer at various operating conditions. The emission reduction performance of Pt-V catalyst was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. The effects of Pt-V and Pt catalysts on regulated and unregulated emissions were investigated using a 0.05 weight percent sulfur content fuel with an engine dynamometer Experiments for gaseous emissions (CO, HC and aldehyde) as well as particulate emissions (TPM, SOF and sulfate) have been conducted at several operating conditions such as T-7 mode, D-13 mode and S-13 mode before and after installing the Pt-V and Pt catalysts in the exhaust system. The emission reduction performance of Pt catalyst with respect to CO, HC, SOF, PAHs and aldehyde was found to be a little higher than that of Pt-V catalyst, but the Pt catalyst showed innate disadvantage of causing an increase of PM due to the sulfate formation via high SO2 conversion at high exhaust temperature, especially above 45$0^{\circ}C$.
Odor dispersion around a cubic building from rooftop odor emissions was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Shear Stress Transport (here after SST) $k-{\omega}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate the flow and odor dispersion around a cubic building. The CFD simulations were performed for three different configurations of cubic buildings comprised of one building, two buildings or three buildings. Five test emission rates were assumed as 1000 OU/s, 2000 OU/s, 3000 OU/s, 4000 OU/s and 5000 OU/s, respectively. Experimental data from wind tunnels obtained by previous studies are used to validate the numerical result of an isolated cubic building. The simulated flow and concentration results of neutral stability condition were compared with the wind tunnel experiments. The profile of streamline velocity and concentration simulation results show a reasonable level of agreement with wind tunnel data. In case of a two-building configuration, the result of emission rate 1000 OU/s illustrates the same plume behavior as a one-building configuration. However, the plume tends to the cover rooftop surface and windward facet of a downstream building as the emission rate increases. In case of a three-building configuration, low emission rates (<4000 OU/s) form a similar plume zone to that of a two-building configuration. However, the addition of a third building, with an emission rate of 5000 OU/s, creates a much greater odorous plume zone on the surface of second building in comparison with a two-building configuration.
