The Estimation of Benzo(a)pyrene Emission from Fuel Combustion in the Seosan Area (서산지역에서 연료연소에 의해 배출된 benzo(a)pyrene의 배출량 산정)

  • Objectives: This study estimated the emission quantity of benzo(a)pyrene(BaP) produced by fuel combustion in the Seosan area, and analyzed the uncertainty regarding the emissions. Methods: It was based on data from a national agency and from public institutions. Emissions were estimated by using national-level guidelines. The total estimated emissions were analyzed by performing Monte Carlo analysis. Results: The full emission quantity of BaP which was discharged by fuel combustion in the Seosan area stood at 1,194.79 g/yr. The point source emissions came to 184.16 g/yr (95% CI; 158.40-209.39). The line source emissions reached 315.33 g/yr (95% CI; 284.99-344.03). The area source emissions accounted for 695.31 g/yr (95% CI; 605.10-793.88). Chemical and compound manufacturing was the highest with 639.13 g/yr (95% CI; 542.95-728.24) in terms of emissions and oil refinery emissions were high with 153.10 g/yr (95% CI; 129.19~177.46). It was found in the Seosan area that the major source of BaP is the manufacturing of chemicals and chemical products. Conclusion: The emission quantity of BaP which was discharged by the fuel combustion in Seosan area reached 1,194.79 g/yr. Research needs to be continued for the definite estimation of emission of BaP henceforth.

A Study of NO Fmission Characteristics in a Non-premixed Counterflow Flame with $H_2/CO_2/Ar$ Blended-fuel (수소/이산화탄소/알곤 혼합 연료의 비예혼합 대향류 화염에서 NO 배출 특성 연구)

  • The detailed chemistry with reaction mechanism of GRI 2.11, which consists of 49 species and 279 elementary reactions, have been numerically conducted to investigate the flame structure and NO emission characteristics in a non-premixed counterflow flame of blended fuel of $H_2/CO_2/Ar$. The combination of $H_2,\;CO_2$, and Ar as fuel is selected to clearly display the contribution of hydrocarbon products to flame structure and NO emission characteristics due to the breakdown of $CO_2$. Radiative heat loss term is involved to correctly describe the flame dynamics especially at low strain rates. All mechanisms including thermal, $NO_2,\;N_2O$, and Fenimore are also taken into account to separately evaluate the effects of $CO_2$ addition on NO emission characteristics. The increase of added $CO_2$ quantity causes flame temperature to fall since at high strain rates diluent effect is prevailing and at low strain rates the breakdown of $CO_2$ produces relatively populous hydrocarbon products and thus the existence of hydrocarbon products inhibits chain branching. It is also found that the ratio of the contribution by Fenimore mechanism to that by thermal mechanism in the total mole production rate becomes much larger with increase in the $CO_2$ quantity and strain rate, even though the absolute quantity of NO production is deceased. Consequently, as strain rate and $CO_2$ quantity increase, NO production by Fenimore mechanism is remarkably augmented.

A Study on the Engine Performance and Exhaust Emission with Intake Port Methanol Injection in a DI Diesel Engine (직분식 디젤기관의 메탄올 흡기분사에 의한 기관성능과 배기배출물에 관한 연구)

  • In order to investigate the effectiveness of methanol, which has high latent heat of evaporation and oxygen contents, for DI diesel engine performance and exhaust emission, the methanol was injected at the suction port of DI diesel engine. The injector used for test was conventional gasoline engine injector and controlled the quantity of methanol per cycle by the power supply controller which designed specially for injector. The results shown that the maximum pressure point was delayed, the value of maximum pressure was decreased, and the concentrations of both NOx and Soot were decreased, as the methanol injection quantity increased, and also the thermal efficiency of engine injected methanol under the high load condition was similar to no methanol injection but under the medium load condition was decreased within the experimental conditions.

  • A cement which is used in construction and a concrete which is a hydration product of cement is considered anti-environmental materials because of lots of $CO_2$ emission in progress of producing and making them. But a concrete absorbs the $CO_2$ gas in atmosphere after hydration and in its lifetime. Based on Papadakis' theses, this research is carried on calculation of the $CO_2$ absorption quantity in concrete. Also, the emission of $CO_2$ was calculated by cement manufacture. As a result, It is said that the $CO_2$ which was emitted during cement manufacturing, was absorbed the 53% of emission quantity by the carbonation of concrete.

Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Reduction according to Different Scenarios of Zero Food Waste Residential Buildings (음식물류폐기물 제로화 주거단지 구축 시나리오별 비용 및 환경효과 분석)

  • In this study, traditional treatment scenario of food wastes that collected and transported food waste is recycled in large treatment facilities and suggested treatment scenario of onsite zero discharge system that food waste is treated in housing complex were supposed. The scenarios were compared and analyzed by capital expenditure, oil consumption, $CO_2$ emission quantity, operating expenditure and management expenses. The capital expenditure, oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity of small scale dispersion dealing method is the lowest compared to traditional treatment method. As a results, it is possible to obtain the effect that operating expenditure was reduced by 91% and management expenses was reduced by 40% with suggested treatment method. The treatment method that have low capital expenditure is tend to lower oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity. The small scale dispersion dealing method have the lowest capital expenditure, oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity and the linked method with sewage treatment have the highest expenditure and $CO_2$ emission quantity. Eventually, the optimal model of onsite zero discharge system in housing complex is small scale dispersion dealing method.

  • It is well known that SOx and NOx concentration has a considerable influence on the $N_2O$ emission of the greenhouse gas properties. The quantity of SOx generated during combustion, on fuel specific basis, is directly related to the sulfur content of the fuel oil. However, restricting the fuel oil sulfur content is only a partial response to limiting the overall quantity of SOx emissions, as there remains no over control on the fuel oil consumption other than the commercial pressure which have always directed the attention. This study was carried out as a new basic experiment method of emission control, manly targeted to the vessel. In the experiment, where the scrubbing was achieved through spray tower with high alkaline water made from the electrolysis of seawater, the combined action was to neutralize the exhaust gases (SOx, PM, CO etc.), dilute it, and wash it out. The results showed that SOx reduction of around 95 percent or over could be achieved when using in the high alkaline water, and also leaded to a reduction in the stability of the each pollutant components including the PM (Particulate Matter). The results suggest that the seawater electrolysis method has a very effective reduction of emissions without heavy cost, or catalysts particularly on board.

  • The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental treaty to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. In order to fulfil the commitments of the countries in an economically efficient way, the UNFCCC adapted the emission trading scheme in the Kyoto Protocol. If the UNFCCC's scheme is enforced in the country, considerable changes in electric power industry are expected due to the imposed greenhouse gas emission reduction. This paper proposes a game theoretic model of the case when generation companies participate in both competitive electricity market and emission market simultaneously. The model is designed such that generation companies select strategically between power quantity and greenhouse gas reduction to maximize their profits in both markets. Demand function and Environmental Welfare of emission trading market is proposed in this model. From the simulation results using the proposed model the impact of the emission trading on generation companies seems very severe in case that the emission prices are significantly high.

  • In this paper, we have established the procedures for $CO_2$ emission estimation BIM libraries by using the material takeoff function that BIM tools fundamentally provide, and verified its availability by applying to steel structures. The BIM library set-up procedures were made up of $CO_2$ emission coefficients and parameter extraction, project unit setting, parameter setting, and $CO_2$ emission quantity calculation formula set-up. We used Revit Architecture 2013 as BIM tool, and established the steel members' family libraries as BIM libraries. It is possible to calculate the $CO_2$ emission quantity by following the proposed BIM library set-up procedures, and users have only to input the $CO_2$ emission coefficients and unit weights of steel members being used. We expect that the results contribute to practical use of BIM in field, and vitalizations of the eco-friendly construction.
