Accurate stress intensity factor analyses and crack growth rate of surface -cracked components in inhomogeneous materials are needed fur reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. This paper describes an automated stress intensity factor analysis of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in inhomogeneous materials. 3D finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor fur subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions. Then the system is applied to analyze cladding effect of subsurface cracks in inhomogeneous materials. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. It is clearly demonstrated from these analyses that the stress intensity factors for subsurface cracks are less than those of surface cracks. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.

This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-coded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete finite element(FE) model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. To demonstrate practical performances of the present system, semi-elliptical surface cracks in a inhomogeneous plate subjected to uniform tension are solved.
Many military and commercial aging aircrafts flying beyond their design life may experience severe crack and corrosion damage, and thus lead to catastrophic failures. In this paper, were used in a finite element model to evaluate the effect of corrosion on the adhesive damage in bonded composite repair of aircraft structures. The damage zone theory was implemented in the finite element code in order to achieve this objective. In addition, the effect of the corrosion, on the repair efficiency. Four different patch shapes were chosen to analyze the adhesive damage: rectangular, trapezoidal, circular and elliptical. The modified damage zone theory was implemented in the FE code to evaluate the adhesive damage. The obtained results show that the adhesive damage localized on the level of corrosion and in the sides of patch, and the rectangular patch offers high safety it reduces considerably the risk of the adhesive failure.
Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.
The present paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. The proposed equation is based on the reference stress approach, and the most relevant normalising loads to define the reference stress for accurate J estimations are given for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. Comparisons with J results from extensive 3-D FE analyses, covering a wide range of crack geometry, plate geometry and loading combination, show overall good agreement not only at the deepest point but also at arbitrary points along the crack front. for pure tension, agreement between the estimated J and the FE results is excellent, even at the surface point. On the other hand, for pure bending and combined bending and tension, the estimated J values become less accurate for locations close to the surface point. Thus the results in this paper will be useful to assess short-term fracture or low cycle fatigue of surface defects in plates under combined bending and tension.
When wet-paddy is threshed by conventional auto-fed thresher, the threshed material under the concave is difficult to separate with pneumatic separation only. The development of thresher with an oscillating sieve in addition to the conventional pneumatic separation has been recommanded to improve the separation of grains from straw and chaff having high moisture content. This study was intended to evaluate the separating performance of an oscillating sieve and to obtain the effective operation conditions of the sieve separation. The sieve with oscillating in an elliptical motion was developed and installed in the experimental unit which can simulate the separating operation of the conventional auto-fed thresher. Results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. The flowing velocity of grains on oscillating sieve was increased as the sieve frequency increased but the feed rate did not significantly affect the flowing velocity of grains on sieve. 2. The effects of sieve frequency and the direction of sieve rotation on the separating performance by oscillating sieve show that increasing the frequency of sieve driving crank above the 460 rpm in the same direction of material flow (con-flow) improved the separating performance. 3. The height of grain guide plate and air velocity through the sieve to optimize the separating performance of oscillating sieve were experimentally determined to give about 10cm above the sieve and 7 m/s, respectively.
Piezoelectric linear motors have been widely studied for auto focusing devices of digital cameras and cellular phones due to their simple structure. In this paper, we confirmed that novel piezoelectric butterfly linear motor was fabricated and its dynamic properties were analyzed. The piezoelectric transducer (having size $9{\times}8{\times}1\;mm^3$) is composed of an elastic plate, which includes a tip for energy transfer and two fixing protrusions for fixture, and two piezoelectric ceramics. The butterfly linear motor has been designed and optimized using A TILA simulation program. The superposed motion is an elliptical vibration on the tip. The actual movement of the manufactured actuator was confirmed by a 3D laser dopier vibrometer and compared with the simulation results. The results of numerical study and experimental investigation will be used for the future optimization of the actuator and the realization of the advanced ultrasonic motor.
