  • A chi-squared test of multivariate normality is suggested which is mainly focused on detecting deviations from elliptical symmetry. This test uses Mahalanobis distances of observations to have some power for deviations from multivariate normality. We derive the limiting distribution of the test statistic by a conditional limit theorem. A simulation study is conducted to study the accuracy of the limiting distribution in finite samples. Finally, we compare the power of our method with those of other popular tests of multivariate normality under two non-normal distributions.

  • We present a photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy M86 in the Virgo Cluster, using the Washington $CT_1$ images taken at the KPNO 4 m telescope. The color distribution of the GCs in M86 is bimodal. The radial number density profile of the blue GCs decreases more slowly as the galactocentric distance increases than that of the red GCs. The density profile of the red GCs is similar to the surface brightness profile of M86 stellar halo. The blue GCs have a roughly circular spatial distribution, while the red GCs have a spatial distribution somewhat elongated, which is consistent with the distribution of the galaxy stellar light. M86 GCs have the negative radial color gradient because the number ratio of the blue GCs to the red GCs increases as galactocentric radius increases. The mean color of the red GCs is similar to that of the stellar halo. The bright blue GCs in the outer region of M86 reveal a blue tilt that the mean colors of the blue GCs get redder as they get brighter. We discuss these results in comparison with other giant elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.

  • Meta-analysis refers to quantitative methods for combining results from independent studies in order to draw overall conclusions. We consider hierarchical models including selection models under a skewed heavy tailed error distribution proposed originally by Chen et al. (1999) and Branco and Dey (2001). These rich classes of models combine the information of independent studies, allowing investigation of variability both between and within studies, and incorporate weight function. Here, the testing for the skewness parameter is discussed. The score test statistic for such a test can be shown to be expressed as the posterior expectations. Also, we consider the detail computational scheme under skewed normal and skewed Student-t distribution using MCMC method. Finally, we introduce one example from Johnson (1993)'s real data and apply our proposed methodology. We investigate sensitivity of our results under different skewed errors and under different prior distributions.

  • Recently it turns out that simple-looking elliptical galaxies and lenticular galaxies are more complex and intriguing than expected. One of the most surprising and intriguing findings in extragalactic studies during the last two decades is a discovery that color distribution of the globular clusters in these galaxies is bimodal, suggesting that there are two subpopulations: blue and red globular clusters. We present a determination of the two-dimensional shape parameters of the blue and red globular cluster systems (GCSs) in a large number of bright elliptical galaxies and lenticular galaxies. The position angles of both and red GCSs show a correlation with those of the stellar light distribution, showing that the major axes of the GCSs are well aligned with those of their host galaxies. However, the shapes of the red GCSs show a tight correlation with the stellar light distribution as with the rotation property of their host galaxies, while the shapes of the blue GCSs do much less. These provide clear geometric evidence that the origins of the blue and red globular clusters are distinct and that these galaxies may have dual halos: a blue (metal-poor) halo and a red (metal-rich) halo. These two halos show significant differences in metallicity, structure, and kinematics, indicating that they are formed in two distinguishable ways. The red halos might have formed via dissipational processes with rotation, while the blue halos are through accretion.

  • We present the structural parameters of ~ 910 dwarf elliptical-like galaxies in the local universe ($z{\lesssim}0.01$) derived from the r-band images of the Sloan Digital SKy Survey (SDSS). We examine the dependence of structural parameters on the morphological types (dS0, dE, dEbc, dSph, and dEblue) and the environment. There is not much difference in the structural parameters among the five subtypes but the mean surface brightness within the effective radius (<${\mu}e$>) of dSph galaxies is clearly different from that of other subtypes. The frequency of disk features such as spiral arm, bar, lens, and rings strongly depends on the morphology of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies with no disk features in dSph galaxies. The absence of disk features and the low surface brightness of dSph galaxies are thought to be closely related to their low mass which leads to different evolution from other subtypes of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies. • In this work, thermo-elastic stability behavior of laminated cross-ply elliptical cylindrical shells subjected to uniform temperature rise is studied employing the finite element approach based on higher-order theory that accounts for the transverse shear and transverse normal deformations, and nonlinear in-plane displacement approximations through the thickness with slope discontinuity at the layer interfaces. The combined influence of higher-order shear deformation, shell geometry and non-circularity on the prebuckling thermal stress distribution and critical temperature parameter of laminated elliptical cylindrical shells is examined.

  • During the deep drawing process an initially flat blank is clamped between the die and the blank holder after which the punch moves down to deform the clamped blank into the desired shape. In general, sheet metal forming may involve stretching, drawing, bending or various combinations of those basic modes of deformation. The deformation problems of sheet metal working involve non-linearity in geometry and material. In this work, The punch load and thickness strain of electro-galvanized sheet steel (SECD) for elliptical deep drawing are examined under the various process conditions including, punch shape radius, die shape radius. The changes of punch load and thickness strain distribution of the deformed elliptical cup are affected by the size of each die shape radius.

  • The aim of this study is to obtain the nonlinear and post-buckling responses of relatively thick functionally graded plates with oblique elliptical cutouts using a new semi-analytical approach. To model the oblique elliptical hole in a FGM plate, six plate-elements are used and the connection between these elements is provided by the well-known Penalty method. Therefore, the semi-analytical technique used in this paper is known as the plate assembly technique. In order to take into account for functionality of the material in a perforated plate, the volume fraction of the material constituents follows a simple power law distribution. Since the FGM perforated plates are relatively thick in this research, the structural model is assumed to be the first order shear deformation theory and Von-Karman's assumptions are used to incorporate geometric nonlinearity. The equilibrium equations for FGM plates containing elliptical holes are obtained by the principle of minimum of total potential energy. The obtained nonlinear equilibrium equations are solved numerically using the quadratic extrapolation technique. Various sets of boundary conditions for FGM plates and different cutout sizes and orientations are assumed here and their effects on nonlinear response of plates under compressive loads are examined.
