  • This study was carried out in order to draw some implications for teaching statistical graph in mathematics education with respect to practical statistics education for promoting students' statistical literacy. We analyze 133 graphs appearing in 99 elementary textbooks of other subjects (subjects except from mathematics) by subjects and types, and identify some cases of graphs addressed by other subjects. As a results, statistical graph was most addressed in social studies, and bar graphs, line graphs, tables, and circle graphs are most used in other subjects. Moreover, there are some issues related to contents-(1) the problem of curricular sequencing between mathematics and other subjects, (2) the level of addressing ratio graph, and (3) the use of wavy lines. In terms of forms, (1) the visual variation of graphical representations, (2) representation combining multiple graphs, and (2) graphs specialized for particular subjects are drawn as other issues. We suggest some implications to be considered when teaching the statistical graph in elementary mathematics classes.

  • Teaching practicum plays a significant role in teacher education program because it provides pre-service teachers with an opportunity to apply what they have learned to the actual teaching contexts. As such, it needs to be conducted in terms of close collaboration between university and school. Given that, in a mathematics methods course the prospective teachers in this study had an opportunity to discuss mathematics lessons they had implemented during their teaching practicum. This paper analyzed in what ways prospective teachers' comments on elementary mathematics instruction were changed through this experience. The results of this study showed that in late comment the teachers tended to focus more on mathematical discourse, consider not only the teacher of the lesson but also students, and suggest alternative approaches on the classroom events they had noticed. It is noticeable that the results analyzed by researchers were consistent with prospective teachers' self-assessment. Building on these results, this paper provides implications of teacher preparation programs to enhance prospective teachers' ability to analyze elementary mathematics lessons.

  • Exercise is still an important method for mathematics learning and teaching, but there is only a few researches which involve the effectiveness of exercise in mathematics learning. This study is designed for giving some implications to researchers who are interested in developing mathematics exercise books for low achievers with respect to effectiveness. For this, 'Suhak-Ikhimchaek', the Korean elementary mathematics workbook, is chosen and in particular, 'multiplication number fact', one of the units of the book, is analyzed with the following respects: achievement levels of learners, arrays of exercise, the amounts and period of exercise, exercise type. Finally, this study proposes composing principles for developing exercise books for low achievers in mathematics.

  • Problems in mathematics textbooks are very important because there is a high reliance on textbooks in elementary school mathematics classes and there is a strong belief that mathematics is to find the solution to problems. Considering this importance, we analyzed problems in elementary mathematics textbooks quantitatively and qualitatively. Concretely, problems of addition and subtraction with carry on in the range of two digit numbers in the mathematics textbooks from the 1st to the 2015 national revised curriculum were analyzed. As a result, the problems in each textbook were found to reveal important features of the textbook reflecting changes in curriculum and educational background. And the problem of textbooks has changed in the direction of enhancing students' reasoning, communication, and problem solving ability. Based on these results, we suggested several implications for dealing with problems in elementary mathematics textbooks.

  • Despite the recent emphasis on value research in mathematics education along with the significance of values from a new perspective, there has been a lack of research on the values perceived by teachers and students in Korea. This paper analyzes how fifth-grade students would perceive the values of a master teacher with expertise in elementary mathematics education after her teaching of mathematics and whether their values on mathematics learning would change. According to the study, the students recognized that the master teacher valued understanding, preview-review, picture, problem, and reason in mathematics learning. Among these, the value of understanding was perceived as the core value. An analysis of the students' values on general mathematics learning and personal mathematics learning showed that preview and review were the most important before and after the master teachers' teaching. An analysis of the changes in the values of students showed the greatest change in the value of understanding. Instead of accepting the values of the master teacher as it were, students actively reconstructed and maintained them. Based on these results, this paper has drawn implications regarding the consideration of students' values in mathematics learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and implement an alternative elementary mathematics curriculum to enhance creative problem solving ability. The curriculum consisting of three main elements was developed. The three elements are content knowledge, process knowledge and creative thinking skills. The curriculum contents and the units were developed by mathematics educators, elementary educators, psychologists, elementary school teachers and curriculum specialists for 3 years. In order to test the effectiveness of the developed curriculum, the 5 units based on a problem-based-learning (PBL) method were implemented in a 5th grade class as an experimental group during the second semester. For the comparison group the ordinary lesson based on the 6th national mathematics curriculum was implemented during the same period. Performance assessment was developed and used for the pre and post test. T-est was use to testify that the effect of the curriculum is statistically signigicant. The results of the test showed that the experimental group progressed significantly in the creative problem solving ability, but the comparison group did not.

  • The seventh curriculum of mathematics which value much of the learners' participative activities became conspicuous by introducing a new system of ‘activities’ to the textbook in particular, Then I categorized and analyzed the ‘activities’ proposed in actual textbooks in the context of specific operative activities. The objective of this study is for understanding the features and trends of the activities proposed in textbooks.

  • 'Saembon' was elementary mathematics textbook in the Period of Syllabus in Korea. First I classified Saembons in five groups. And then I regrouped them into two kinds. One kinds were published under U.S. Army Military Government, and other kinds were made under Republic of Koera. Two kinds of Saembon were very different in several aspects. I showed how they were different through real examples. Finally I tried to explain that Saembons under Republic of Koera were better than Saembons under U.S. Army Military Government.

  • Intuition plays an important role in the mathematical education as well as the process of invention in mathematics. And many mathematics educators became interested in intuition in mathematics education. So we need to analyze the effect of the characters of intuition of elementary students. In this study, the questionnaire and the interview were used. The subjects were 6 grade-103 students in the questionnaire. They were asked to solve the problems in the questionnaire which was designed by the researcher and to describe the reasons why they answered like that. Students are effected directly by the characters of intuition, ie self-evidence, intrinsic certainty, implicitness, etc. And the effect come from intuitive and ordinary experiences and the results of previous learning. In conclusion, we have to be interested in teaching via intuition and to control the effect of the characters of intuition.

  • Teaching and learning mathematics in a classroom setting is based on the interactions between the teacher and her students. Using classroom observations and interviews of students and the teacher, this research examines a first-year teacher and her students' interactions in the mathematics classroom. In this mathematics classroom, teacher and students interaction had inconsistency between mathematical topics and non-mathematical topics. For non-mathematical topics, their interactions were very active but for mathematical topics their interactions were very limited. This paper ends with raising questions for future research and calling for the opportunities for first-year teachers to reflect on their interactions with their students, in particular about mathematical topics.
