Transposable elements are one of major sources to cause genomic instability through various mechanisms including de novo insertion, insertion-mediated genomic deletion, and recombination-associated genomic deletion. Among them is Alu element which is the most abundant element, composing ~10% of the human genome. The element emerged in the primate genome 65 million years ago and has since propagated successfully in the human and non-human primate genomes. Alu element is a non-autonomous retrotransposon and therefore retrotransposed using L1-enzyme machinery. The 'master gene' model has been generally accepted to explain Alu element amplification in primate genomes. According to the model, different subfamilies of Alu elements are created by mutations on the master gene and most Alu elements are amplified from the hyperactive master genes. Alu element is frequently involved in genomic rearrangements in the human genome due to its abundance and sequence identity between them. The genomic rearrangements caused by Alu elements could lead to genetic disorders such as hereditary disease, blood disorder, and neurological disorder. In fact, Alu elements are associated with approximately 0.1% of human genetic disorders. The first part of this review discusses mechanisms of Alu amplification and diversity among different Alu subfamilies. The second part discusses the particular role of Alu elements in generating genomic rearrangements as well as human genetic disorders.

In multibit Sigma-Delta Modulator, one of the DEM(Dynamic Element Matching) techniques which is DWA(Data Weighted Averaging) is widely used to get rid of non-linearity caused by mismatching of capacitor that is unit element of feedback DAC. In this paper, by adjusting clock timing used in existing DWA architecture, 2n Register block used for output was replaced with 2n S-R latch block. As a result of this, MOS Tr. can be reduced and extra clock can also be removed. Moreover, two n-bit Register block used to delay n-bit data code is decreased to one n-bit Register. After designing the 3rd 3-bit SC(Switched Capacitor) Sigma-Delta Modulator by using the proposed DWA architecture, 0.1% of mismatching into unit element in input frequency 20 kHz and sampling frequency 2.56 MHz. As a consequence of the simulation, It was able to get the same resolution as the existing architecture and was able to reduce the number of MOS Tr. by 222.

To reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the deck of a dump truck and to design an eco-friendly deck, accurate structural analysis is required. To date, the load on the deck has been calculated based on the hydrostatic pressure or by applying the earth pressure theory. However, these methods cannot be used to determine the non-uniformity of the load on the deck. Load distribution varies depending on the size distribution and interaction of aggregate particles. Compared with the finite element method, the discrete element method can simulate the behavior of aggregate particles more effectively. In this study, major properties were obtained by measuring bulk density and repose. The deck of a 15 ton dump truck was simulated using the obtained properties and bumping, breaking, and turning load conditions were applied. EDEM, which is a discrete element analysis software, was employed. The stress and strain distribution of the deck were calculated by NASTRAN and compared with the measured values. The study revealed that the results derived from a DEM simulation were more accurate than those based on mathematical assumption.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) position of the center of resistance of 4 mandibular anterior teeth, 6 mandibular anterior teeth, and the complete mandibular dentition by using 3D finite-element analysis. Methods: Finite-element models included the complete mandibular dentition, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The crowns of teeth in each group were fixed with buccal and lingual arch wires and lingual splint wires to minimize individual tooth movement and to evenly disperse the forces onto the teeth. Each group of teeth was subdivided into 0.5-mm intervals horizontally and vertically, and a force of 200 g was applied on each group. The center of resistance was defined as the point where the applied force induced parallel movement. Results: The center of resistance of the 4 mandibular anterior teeth group was 13.0 mm apical and 6.0 mm posterior, that of the 6 mandibular anterior teeth group was 13.5 mm apical and 8.5 mm posterior, and that of the complete mandibular dentition group was 13.5 mm apical and 25.0 mm posterior to the incisal edge of the mandibular central incisors. Conclusions: Finite-element analysis was useful in determining the 3D position of the center of resistance of the 4 mandibular anterior teeth group, 6 mandibular anterior teeth group, and complete mandibular dentition group.

When structural analysis modelling methods of practical fields are investigated, a slab is generally modeled by a finite element mesh using plate elements and a shear wall is modeled using a shell element or wall element for 3-D structural analysis. The point worthy of notice in this practice is that a shear wall is modelled using only one wall or shell element divided by floors and column lines to produce structural models. The modeling method like this can cause analysis errors according to the type of computer programs in use, and these errors reduce the reliability of the analysis results. Therefore, to secure the reliability of structural analysis, studies of the causes of errors and finding reasonable modeling methods are necessary. In this study, the causes of analysis errors according to the modelling methods of a shear wall, which are used in practical fields, were investigated and some considering matters for modelling a shear wall are presented to reduce the analysis errors on these analysis results.

Recently, the free form buildings are constructed frequently. Exterior and interior components of these buildings have the free cross-section and a curved shape. So, There are many usages of classical finite element having tapered section and free-style shape. Some general commercial applications like ETABS, SAP2000, MIDAS are usually used for the safety evaluation of the free form structures. However, there are some limits in the accuracy of structural analysis and the length of analysis time because a very complicated finite element mesh have to be used. Therefore, In this study, a pre and post program module was developed to take advantage of general 3-D curved beam element which has a free-style curved shape and mathematical backgrounds. Pre-post processing module has been developed in this study was developed to control the curvature of the curved members by the NURBS control points. As a result, fast geometric modeling than was possible commercial applications. In addition, realistic depiction of the shape and behavior patterns were possible because of the free-form building allows visual check of the free form.

In recent years, industrial demands for superior mechanical properties of powder metallurgy steel components with low cost are rapidly growing. Sinter hardening that combines sintering and heat treatment in continuous one step is cost-effective. The cooling rate during the sinter hardening process dominates material microstructures, which finally determine the mechanical properties of the parts. This research establishes a numerical model of the relation between various cooling rates and microstructures in a sinter hardenable material. The evolution of a martensitic phase in the treated microstructure during end quench tests using various cooling media of water, oil, and air is predicted from the cooling rate, which is influenced by cooling conditions, using the finite element method simulations. The effects of the cooling condition on the microstructure of the sinter hardening material are found. The obtained limiting size of the sinter hardening part is helpful to design complicate shaped components.
Power transformer is one of the major and key apparatus in electric power system. Monitoring and diagnosis of transformer fault is necessary for improving the life period of transformer. The failures caused by short circuits are one of the causes of transformer outages. The short circuit currents induce excessive forces in the transformer windings which result in winding deformation affecting the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the winding. In the present work, a transformer producing only the radial flux under short circuit is considered. The corresponding axial displacement profile of the windings is computed using Finite Element Method based transient structural analysis and thus obtained displacements are compared with the experimental result. The change in inter disc capacitance and mutual inductance of the deformed windings due to different short circuit currents are computed using Finite Element Method based field analyses and the corresponding Sweep Frequency Responses are computed using the modified electrical equivalent circuit. From the change in the first resonant frequency, the winding movement can be quantified which will be useful for estimating the mechanical withstand capability of the winding for different short circuit currents in the design stage itself.

This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. 3D finite element method(FEM) was used to obtain the SIF for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy theory. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete FE model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.

Composites are materials that are widely used in industries such as automobile and aircraft. The composite material is required as a material for using in a high temperature environment as well as acting as a high pressure environment like the nozzle part of the ship. It is important to know the properties of composites. Result values obtained substituting the properties of matrix and fiber numerically have an large error compared with experimental value. In this study we utilize CASADsolver EDISON program for using Finite Element Method. Properties by substituting the fiber and Matrix properties of the composite material properties were compared with those measured in the experiment and calculated by the empirical properties.
