Electron Spin Resonance Line-widths of Carbon Nanotubes based on the Hyperfine Interaction

  • The Kubo formalism and utilizing the projection operator technique (POT) introduced by Kawabata, the electron spin resonance (ESR) line-shape formula for carbon nanotubes through the hyperfine interaction introduced earlier in terms of POT. We can see that the line-width decreases exponentially as the temperature increases. The spin relaxation time show gradual decrease as magnetic field becomes larger. The analysis reveals the peculiarities in spin relaxation inherent to one dimensional system at low temperature and weak magnetic fields. Thus, the present technique is considered to be more convenient to explain the carbon nanotubes as in the case of other optical transitions.

ESR detection of optically-induced hyperpolarization of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond

  • Nitrogen vacancy center (NV center) in diamond has recently been appeared as a promising candidate for hyperpolarization applications due to its optical pumping property by laser. Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) has been used as a conventional method to obtain the resonance spectrum of NV centers. ODMR, however, has a shortcoming of sensitivity and a limitation of subjects, such that the degree of hyperpolarization can hardly be estimated, and that the spins other than NV centers are invisible. In contrast, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is known to proportionally reflect the degree of spin polarization. In this work, we successfully observed the optically-induced hyperpolarization of NV spins in diamond through CW-ESR spectroscopy with an X-band system. All the NV peaks were identified by calculating the eigenvalues of NV spin Hamiltonian. The intensities of NV peaks were enhanced over 240 times after optical pumping. The enhanced peaks corresponding to the transition from |ms=0> to |ms=-1> revealed inverted phases, while other peaks remained in-phase. The optically-induced hyperpolarization on NV spins can be a useful polarization source, leading to 13C nuclear hyperpolarization in diamond.

Development of High-Sensitivity Cantilever-Detected ESR Measurement Using a Fiber-Optic Interferometer

  • Cantilever-detected high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) is a powerful method of sub-terahertz and terahertz ESR spectroscopy for a tiny magnetic sample at low temperature. In this technique, a small magnetization change associated with ESR transition is detected as deflection of a sample-mounted cantilever. So far, we have succeeded in ESR detection at 370 GHz using a commercial piezoresistive microcantilever. The spin sensitivity was estimated to ${\sim}10^{12}$ spins/gauss. In order to further increase the sensitivity, we adopt a fiber-optic-based detection system using a Fabry-Perot interferometer in place of piezoresistive system. Fabry-Perot cavity is formed between an optical-fiber end and microcantilever surface, and a change in the interference signal, corresponding to the cantilever deflection, is sensitively detected. This system is suitable for low-temperature and high-magnetic-field experiments because of its compact setup and less heat dissipation. In this study, performance of Fabry-Perot interferometer is evaluated, and its application to cantilever-detected ESR measurement is described.

Electron Spin Transition Line-width of Mn-doped Wurtzite GaN Film for the Quantum Limit

  • Starting with Kubo's formula and using the projection operator technique introduced by Kawabata, EPR lineprofile function for a $Mn^{2+}$-doped wurtzite structure GaN semiconductor was derived as a function of temperature at a frequency of 9.49 GHz (X-band) in the presence of external electromagnetic field. The line-width is barely affected in the low-temperature region because there is no correlation between the resonance fields and the distribution function. At higher temperature the line-width increases with increasing temperature due to the interaction of electrons with acoustic phonons. Thus, the present technique is considered to be more convenient to explain the resonant system as in the case of other optical transition systems.

자성박막 소자 에칭용 전자 사이클로트론 공명 이온밀링 시스템 제작과 특성연구 (Fabrication and Performance of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Milling System for Etching of Magnetic Film Device)

  • 자성박막의 미세패턴 소자 제작을 위해 전자 사이크로트론 공명(electron cyclotron resonance; ECR) Ar 이온밀링 시스템을 제작하였다. 소자 식각에 적용한 ECR 이온밀링 시스템에서 주파수 2.45 GHz 파장 12.24 cm의 마이크로파 소스인 마그네트론은 전력 600 W에 의해 가동되어 파장의 정수배에 맞추어 만든 도파관을 통하여 전달되도록 설계하였다. 마이크로파 주파수와 공명시키기 위해 전자석으로 908 G의 자기장을 인가하였고, 알곤 개스를 cavity에 유입시켜서 방전된 이온들은 그리드 사이에 인가한 약 1000 V의 가속전압에 의한 에너지를 갖고 표면을 밀링한다. 이것을 이용하여 다층구조 GMR-SV(giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) 자성박막에 광 리소그래피, 이온밀링 및 전극제작 공정과정을 마치고 폭이 $1{\mu}m$에서 $9{\mu}m$까지의 소자들을 제작하여 광학현미경으로 소자 크기를 관찰하였다.

  • The chalcogenide glass (ALS, $Al_2S_3-La_2S_3$) was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of aluminum powder and $La_2S_3$ under $H_2S$ atmosphere at $1200{\circ}C$. Glasses containing 0.1-0.1% of $Mn^{2+},\;Gd^{3+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ were also prepared. The characteristic features of the ESR spectra for the transition metal containing ALS glasses are interpreted.

Pulsed Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Application on the Photoinduced Charge Separation of Alkylphenothiazine Derivatives in Molecular Assemblies

  • Photoinduced charge separation of alkylphenothiazines in molecular assemblies such as positively, negatively and neutrally charged micelle interface results in the paramagnetic phenothiazine cation radical. This was studied as a model system for the light energy conversion into chemical energy. The photoproduced phenothaizne cation radical was identified and its amount was quantized with electron spin resonance (ESR). The microenvironment of photoproduced cation radical was studied with pulsed-ESR. Such a charge separation is enhanced by the optimization of various structural factors of the molecular assemblies. The structural factors of molecular assemblies have focused on the interface charge, interface structure with different headgroups and interfacial perturbation by disolving interface active organic additives.

Enhancing Effect of Organic Substances on Hydroxyl Radical Generation During Ozonation of Water: Stopped-Flow ESR Technique

  • Generation of hydroxyl radical, one of their major active species in ozonation of water was directly observed with spin-trapping/electron spin resonance (ESR) technique using 5,5-dimethyl-pyrrolidine-1-oxyl (DMPO) as a spin-trapping reagent. Hydroxyl radical was trapped with DMPO as a stable radical, DMPO-OH. 80 mM of ozone produced $1.08{\times}10^{-6}$M of DMPO-OH, indicating that 1.4% of ${\cdot}$OH is trapped with DMPO if ${\cdot}$OH is produced stoichiometrically from ozone. Humic acid suppressed DMPO-OH generation in a dose-dependent manner. Generation rate of DMPO-OH was determined with ESR/stopped-flow measurement. Phenol derivatives increased the amount and generation rate of DMPO-OH, indicating that phenol derivatives enhance·OH generation during ozonation of water.

Alanine/ESR Spectroscopy에 의한 고에너지 전자선의 선량측정 (High Energy Electron Dosimetry by Alanine/ESR Spectroscopy)

  • 물질에 방사선을 조사시키면 구성원자 또는 분자의 일부분이 전리되며 특수한 유기화합물은 장기간 free radical상태로 존재하고 그 밀도는 조사된 방사선량에 비례한다. Free radical상태의 물질에 마이크로파와 같은 전자파를 투과시키면 free radicl된 전자의 고유진동과 일치된 전자파를 흡수하는 전자스핀공명(Electron Spin Resonance)이 일어나며 흡수된 전파의 강도를 측정함으로서 조사된 방사선량을 추측할 수 있다. ESR를 이용한 free radical dosimeter로서 가장 잘 알려진 물질이 아미노산 alanine이므로 이것과 파라핀 $10\%$를 혼합하여 $0.4\times1cm$의 alanine dosimeter를 제작하였다. 측정 방법은 방사선 흡수선량을 직접 측정할 수 있도록 조직등가인 물 팬텀과 방수된 Alanine dosimeter holder를 제작하고 의료용 선형가속기에서 발생되는 $6\~21$ MeV전자선을 조사하면서 최대 흡수 선량과 깊이에 따른 선량분포를 측정하였다. 전자선 조사선량은 1 Gy에 60 Gy까지의 방사선 치료선량 범위를 선택하였으며 측정결과 전자선량 증가에 따라 ESR신호의 진폭이 선형비례적으로 증가하였다. 그러나 전자선량이 4 Gy이하에서는 alanine dosimeter의 선량 균일성 이 $\pm2\~4\%$ (표준편차)의 오차가 있었으며 4 Gy이상에서는 $\pm1\%$ 이하의 오차를 나타냄으로서 환자에 대한 전자선 조사량 범위인 1Gy에서 60Gy까지의 흡수선량을 정확히 측정할 수 있었다. 측정한 결과 전자선 에너지 12 MeV이하에서는 전리상으로 측정 계산된 선량과 일치하였지만 15 MeV이상에서는 표면에서 깊이 2cm까지의 흡수선량이 약$2\~5\%$가 높았다. 이와 같은 현상은 의료용 선형가속기의 전자선 방출구에 장착된 산란판과 조사면을 조정하는 cone에 의하여 발생되는 저 에너지 산란전자선이 alanine dosimeter에 측정된 것으로서 에너지가 증가될수록 오염 정도가 증가되었다. 본 실험을 통하여 지금까지 고에너지 전자선량계측에서 전리상에 의한 전기량 측정과 산란선이 없는 단일 에너지로만 간주하여 계산하였던 전자선 흡수선량 측정방법을 직접 흡수선량 측정이 가능한 Alanine/ESR dosimetry로서 교정하는 것이 바람직하다고 생각한다.

Convenient Assay of O2- Generated on Potato Tuber Tissue Slices Treated with Fungal Elicitor by Electron Spin Resonance - No Secondary Oxidative Burst Induction by H2O2 Treatment

  • Since the discovery of generation of $O_2^-$ in plant, many evidence for the oxidative burst (OXB) has been accumulated in various combinations of plant and pathogen or elicitor systems. $O_2^-$ generating system responsible for the OXB was coupled with oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) in microsomal fraction isolated from sliced aged potato tuber slices which were treated by hyphal wall components elicitor from Phytophthora infestans (HWC). We developed new assay method for quantitative measurement of oxygen radical $O_2^-$ by using electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis during elicitor­induced OXB on the surface of plant tissues. The ESR analysis using an $O_2^-$ trapper, Tiron (1,2-dihydroxy-3,5­benzenedisulfonic acid), provided a convenient assay for detecting only $O_2^-$ during elicitor-induced OXB producing various active oxygen species (AOS) on plant tissue surface. Tiron was oxidized to Tiron semiquinon radical by $O_2^-$. Quantity of the radical signal was measured by specific spectra on ESR spectroscopy. The level of $O_2^-$ was high in from surface of potato tuber tissue treated with hyphal cell wall elicitor (HWC) from Phytophthora infestans. There was no secondary OXB induction by $H_2O_2$ treatment in plant.
