  • Purpose: We investigated the changes of plastic lens after etching of coating films by comparing uncoated lens. Methods: CR-39, middle index and high index lenses of 0 (zero) diopter were etched at $80^{\circ}C$ and room temperature using a coating remover, and then changes of refractive power, transmittance and surface morphology were investigated. Results: There were no differences in refractive power and transmittance between uncoated and etched lenses. The etching rate was similar in both CR-39 and middle index lens, but in the case of high index lens, it was slower and less steady than the others. From the SEM observation of lens surface, etching damage was found out on the surface of etched lens. It was shown the least damage in middle index lens but the most damage in high index lens. Conclusions: If the etching of coating films is demanded on condition that the surface of ophthalmic lenses are not damaged, a using of most adequate coating remover based on lens material should be considered, and a caution for proper etching conditions is required.

  • Experimental studies of laser micromachining on Mo metal using piezo Q-switched Nd:YAG laser have been performed. Miniaturized microcolumn electron gun arrays as a potential electron beam lithography or portable mini-scanning electron microscope application have recently extensively examined. For these purpose, the electro-static electron lens and deflector system called microcolumn has to be assembled. The conventional microcolumn fabrication technique would gave a limitation on the minimization of aberration. The current technique of a 1 $\mu$m misalignment would lead to ~1.3 nm coma. In order to reduce aberration, assembling the microcolumn component followed by laser drilling should be very beneficial. In this report, we will address the preliminary report of laser micromachining on Mo substrate using piezo Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The geometrical figures, such as the diameter and the depth of the frilled aperture are dependent upon the total energy of the laser pulse train, laser pulsewidth, and the diameter of laser beam in addition to the materials-dependent parameters.

  • We have investigated the characteristics of the electron beam (e-beam) in the miniaturized free electron laser module by using the commercial 3D simulation tool OPERA. The e-beam was made parallel before entering the slit-type wiggler by the negative bias applied to the central electrode of the electron lens. With respect to the different structures of the wiggler, we obtained the inner distributions of the electrical potential and the electric field, which was, in turn, used to calculate the trajectory of the e-beam in the wiggler.

  • Purpose: The present study was conducted to investigate the changes in the physical properties of RGP lenses induced by the polishing during the process of RGP lens manufacturing, and further evaluate the differences in the actual wearer's comfort and the tear film break-up time caused by these changes. Methods: RGP lenses (fluorosilicone acrylate material) were divided into 4 groups by the different lens-polishing time like 0, 25, 50 and 100 seconds and the thickness, the surface roughness and the wetting angle of those lenses were compared. Furthermore, the comfortability of the lens wear was surveyed after applying these lenses on the subject's eyes with normal tear volume and the non-invasive tear break-up time of the wearers was measured. Results: The central thickness of 4 RGP lenses made of different lens-polishing time was not significantly different however, the lens surface was changed smoother after polishing to be confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The wetting angle of the RGP lens significantly decreased in accordance with the increase of polishing time. Thus, the difference of approximately $16^{\circ}$ between 0 second and 100 seconds-polishing was statistically significant. The actual wearing feeling of RGP lens was tended to improve in accordance with the increase of the lens wettability however, it was not proportional improvement. The non-invasive tear break-up time of the lens wearers showed different aspect compared with the changes in lens wettability and the actual feeling of RGP lens wear. Conclusions: In this study, better lens wettability, thinner lens thickness, and/or improved lens surface induced by physical stimuli in the process of RGP lens manufacturing was not well-correlated with the increase of actual subjective/objective satisfaction in RGP lens wear. Thus, the consideration of physical properties of the lens as well as the lens wearers' physiological factors in the process of RGP lens manufacturing may be suggested.

  • A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a complex system, consisting of many sophisticated components. For a systematic characterization, a $2^4$ full factorial experiment was conducted. The SEM components examined include condenser lens 1 and 2 (denoted as A and B, respectively), and Objective lens (coarse and fine-denoted as C and D respectively). A statistical analysis was conduced to investigate factor effects and variations In response surfaces. Among four factors, main effect analysis revealed that A and D were Identified as the dominant factor. Moreover, B showed conflicting effect against C. The $R^2$ of statistical regression model constructed was about 69.6%. The model generated 3D response surface plots facilitated understanding of complex tactor effects.

  • Purpose: The present study was conducted to investigate whether the elution of the dyes from the circle contact lenses existed or not when rubbed with cotton swab. Methods: The change of lens surface was observed by scanning electron microscope when a total of seven kinds of circle contact lens were rubbed with cotton swab, and the dye elution was further compared when the lenses were soaked in multi-purpose solution in $20^{\circ}C$ and $36.5^{\circ}C$ for a week. Results: Five of a total of 7 circle contact lenses showed the dye elution from the front or the back surface of the lens when rubbed with cotton swabs, and existence of dye elution was varied depending on the type of contact lenses and different at the front and back surface even in the same lens. The tear-off of the pigmented portion by the rubbing was found through scanning electron microscopic observation when the dye elution existed. However, the dye was not eluted when the circle contact lenses was soaked in a multi-purpose solution in $20^{\circ}C$ or $36.5^{\circ}C$ for a week. Ingredient of colorant was not provided by the manufacturers in more than 50% of the circle contact lenses investigated for this study and the basic information such as the pigmentation method was provided inappropriately. Conclusions: In this study, the result was the dye elution from circle contact lenses was obtained when a physical force is applied thus, it may appear to contribute the development of circle contact lenses and safety of lens wear.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to figure out how the characteristics of soft contact lens materials and pigmentation affect the adherence of C. albicans on soft contact lenses pre-deposited with tear constituents. Methods: The adherent number of C. albicans on clear soft contact lenses (hereinafter clear lenses) and circle soft contact lenses (hereinafter circle lenses) made of etafilcon A, hilaiflcon B and nelfilcon A, respectively, was measured before and after the deposition of artificial tear. Also, bacteria adherence on lenses were observed by a scanning electron microscope. Results: Adherence of C. albicans was significantly different according to lens materials. The amount of adsorption was not different between clear lenses and circle lenses made of etafilcon A however, the number of bacteria absorption was bigger in hilafilcon B and nelfilcon A lenses. More absorption of C. albicans was found in the non-pigmented central area compared the pigmented area, and non-pigmented peripheral area has more bacterial absorption than non-pigmented central area. The number of C. albicans decreased in the case that tear protein was pre-deposited. The maintenance of antibacterial activity against C. albicans was different according to lens materials thus, etafilcon A has the longest period of its maintenance. Conclusions: It was revealed that the number of C. albicans was different according to the characteristics of lens materials, pigmentation or non-pigmentation, the pigmented area of soft contact lenses. Thus, it is suggested that the management method should be different according to the adsorption characteristics of C. albicans.

  • Morphological changes of Drosophila ocellar corneagenous cells were studied to the development with electron microscopy, and the movement of produced proteins was traced with autoradiography. Corneagenous cells of immediate postemergence showed very active secretion pattern. However, a few days after the emergence, the secretory activity of corneagenous cell was supposed to be dropped suddenly. In autoradiography, almost of proteins that produced by corneagenous cells moved toward lens. From this, it was supposed that the corneagenous cells do not function in photoreceptor cells rather in the formation of lens at the postemergence stage. Corneagenous cells of pupal stage were well developed. In the period of lens formation, rER of corneagenous cells were well developed and it suggested very active material metabolism. Granules and microtubules were also frequently observed and the later would be a pathway of the movement of materials. In conclusion, corneagenous cells were well developed at vigorous lens forming stage. After emergence, when the lens formation was completed, both the function and the size of corneagenous cells were reduced.
