  • In this paper lead zirconate titanate transducers (PZT) are employed for damage detection of four reinforced concrete (RC) column specimens retrofitted with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets. A major disadvantage of FRP jacketing in RC members is the inability to inspect visually if the concrete substrate is damaged and in such case to estimate the extent of damage. The parameter measured during uniaxial compression tests at random times for known strain values is the real part of the complex number of the Electromechanical Admittance (Conductance) of the sensors, obtained by a PXI platform. The transducers are placed in specific positions along the height of the columns for detecting the damage in different positions and carrying out conclusions for the variation of the Conductance in relation to the position the failure occurred. The quantification of the damage at the concrete substrate is achieved with the use of the root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) index, which is evaluated for the corresponding strain values. The experimental results provide evidence that PZT transducers are sensitive to damage detection from an early stage of the experiment and that the use of PZT sensors for monitoring and detecting the damage of FRP-retrofitted reinforced concrete members, by using the Electromechanical Admittance (EMA) approach, can be a highly promising method.

  • In this study, the electromechanical property of REBCO coated conductor (CC) tape adopting a stainless steel substrate has been investigated. Sample was subjected to uniaxial tension and measured its mechanical properties at RT and 77 K. $I_c-{\varepsilon}_t$ relations was also studied in which the strain and stress corresponding to the 95% $I_c$ retention and reversible strain limit were measured. In addition, these results were compared to the case of conventional REBCO CC tape adopting a Hastelloy substrate. As a result, by adopting a stainless steel substrate comparable strength and good electromechanical property to Hastelloy one could be achieved.

  • It is proposed that the electromechanical relation of the conductive materials with high electrical resistance may be used to estimate the current stress of prestressing tendons. To choose the best conductive material to this end, we studied the electromechanical relations of carbon fibers and metalic heat wires experimentally. It is found that the relation of carbon fibers can be modelled by a parabolic(or hyperbolic) function in the early stage of deformation. Metallic heat wires show a consistent linear relation during loading and unloading in the elastic deformation and are suitable for this purpose. We propose a new kind of prestressing tendons whose stress can be monitored.

  • The stator tooth is a key component of the electromechanical integrated toroidal drive system. The stator tooth is spiral in shape and the calculation of its displacements is difficult. In this paper, using the coordinate transformation method, the displacements of the stator tooth in the local coordinate system are expressed as the function of the variable in the drive coordinate system. Using the minimum potential energy principle, the equations of the displacements of the stator tooth under the loads are deduced. The displacement distributions within the stator tooth are investigated and the changes of the displacement distributions along with the main parameters are analyzed. This research can offer the basis for the strength and stiffness design of the drive system.

  • The mechanical properties of REBCO coated conductor (CC) wires under uniaxial tension are largely determined by the thick component layers in the architecture, namely, the substrate and the stabilizer or even the reinforcement layer. Depending on device applications of the CC tapes, it is necessary to reinforce thin metallic foils externally to one-side or both sides of the CC tapes. Due to the external reinforcement of brass foils, it was found that this could increase the reversible strain limit from the Cu-stabilized CC tapes. In this study, the effects of differently hardened brass foil laminate on the electromechanical property of CC tapes were investigated under uniaxial tension loading. The tensile strain dependence of the critical current ($I_c$) was measured at 77 K and self-field. Depending on whether the $I_c$ of CC tapes were measured during loading or after unloading, a reversible strain (or stress) limit could be determined, respectively. The both-sides of the Cu-stabilized CC tapes were laminated with brass foils with different hardness, namely 1/4H, 1H and EH. From the obtained results, it showed that the yield strength of the brass laminated CC tapes with EH brass foil laminate was comparable to the one of the Cu-stabilized CC tape due to its large yield strength even though its large volume fraction. It was found that the brass foil with different hardness was mainly sensitive on the stress dependence of $I_c$, but not on the strain sensitivity due to the residual strain induced in the laminated CC tapes during unloading.

  • Abnormally large electromechanical strain properties have been reported in bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics, which cast a promise for replacing the market-dominating PZT-based piezoelectric ceramics in actuator applications. In spite of these large strains in bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics, there still remains a critical issue for its safe transfer to practical applications, representatively, a relatively high operating field required to obtain the large strain properties. To overcome the challenge, much attention has been paid to so-called 0-3(or 3-0) type ceramic/ceramic composite approach to better tailoring the strain properties of bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics. The approach turns out to be highly effective, leading to a drastic decrease in the operating electric field for these materials. Besides, both extensive and intensive search for the related mechanism revealed that the reduction in the operating electric field is largely due to the contribution from polarization coupling or strain coupling model between two different ceramics. This article reviews the status of the art in the development of novel ceramic/ceramic composites to make large incipient piezostrains in bismuth-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics practical.

  • It is proposed that the electromechanical relation of the conductive materials with high electrical resistance may be used to estimate the current stress of prestressing tendons. To choose the best conductive material to this end, we studied the electromechanical relations of carbon fibers and metalic heat wires experimentally. The strain of those materials was controlled instead of the stress during the experiment. It is found that the relation of carbon fibers can be modelled by a parabolic(or hyperbolic) function in the early stage of deformation. However because the relation is not consistent when it is unloaded and reload, carbon fibers are not suitable for this purpose. Metallic heat wires show a consistent linear relation during loading and unloading in the elastic deformation and are suitable for this purpose. To estimate the electromechanics relation of metallic wires, we developed a simple formula based on the rigid plasticity. We propose a new kind of prestressing tendons whose stress can be monitored. As a side result of this study, we found that the electromechanical relation of carbon fibers without epoxy matrix becomes almost linear after a certain strain.

  • Piezoelectric Actuator and electrostrictive Actuator samples were fabricated using PMN-PT-PZ system ceramics with Barium substitution, and the strain properties of them investigated. The largest Piezoelectric coefficient and electromechanical coupling coefficient were observed at sintering temperature $1250^{\circ}C$, Barium 0.05 mol %. The strain of poled samples is observed twice highly then unpoled ones, and the former showed larger hysteresis in strain then the latter, too. Poled multilayered actuator samples showed considerable strain.

  • In this study, piezoelectric actuator samples were fabricated using 0.375PMN-0.37OPT-0.255PZ system ceramics with Barium substitution and the strain properties of them were investigated. Dielectric constant of the specimens increased with the increase of Ba content up to 5mol% and decreased with futher addition of Ba. The largest piezoelectric coefficient and electromechanical coupling coefficient were observed at the sintering temperature of 1250'C and Barium content of 5mol%. The characteristics of strain hysteresis was found largely with varing the sintering temperature on the single round type, and the strain is proportional to piezoelectric coefficient.
