Electroencephalographic(EEG) is used to record activities of human brain in the area of psychology for many years. As technology developed, neural basis of functional areas of emotion processing is revealed gradually. So we measure fundamental areas of human brain that controls emotion of human by using EEG. Hands gestures such as shaking and head gesture such as nodding are often used as human body languages for communication with each other, and their recognition is important that it is a useful communication medium between human and computers. Research methods about gesture recognition are used of computer vision. Many researchers study Emotion Recognition method which uses one of EEG signals and Gestures in the existing research. In this paper, we use together EEG signals and Gestures for Emotion Recognition of human. And we select the driver emotion as a specific target. The experimental result shows that using of both EEG signals and gestures gets high recognition rates better than using EEG signals or gestures. Both EEG signals and gestures use Interactive Feature Selection(IFS) for the feature selection whose method is based on the reinforcement learning.
Objectives The power spectral analysis of electroencephalogram has been widely used to reveal the pathophysiology of the alcoholic brain. However, the results were not consistent and the three dimensional study can be hardly found. The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the three dimensional electroencephalographic (EEG) activity of alcohol dependent patients using standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA). Methods The participants consisted of 30 alcohol dependent patients and 30 normal healthy controls. All the participants were males who had refrained from alcohol at least one month and were not taking any medications. Thirty two channel EEG data was collected in the resting state with eyes-closed condition during 30 seconds. The three dimensional data was compared between two groups using sLORETA for delta, theta, alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 frequency bands. Results sLORETA revealed significantly increased brain cortical activity in alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 bands each in alcohol dependent patients compared to normal controls. The voxels showing the maximum significance were in the left transverse temporal gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus, left anterior cingulate, and left fusiform gyrus in alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 bands respectively. Conclusions These results suggest that chronic alcohol intake may cause neurophysiological changes in cerebral activity. Therefore, the measuring of EEG can be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of cognitive impairements in alcohol dependence.
This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic parameters, such as correlation dimension $D_2,$ by comparing spectral electroencephalographic (EEG) parameters. These parameters are used to estimate the depth of halothane anesthesia as defined by the presence of body movement in response to a tail clamp. Six rats were used and each of them was exposed to halothane sequentially at the concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% for 30 min. A tail clamp was applied every five min and the movements were recorded at each concentration level. The spectral parameters and the dynamic parameters were derived from 20-sec and 10-sec segments, respectively, from the last 5-mins of EEG recording at each concentration level. Correlation coefficients between the parameters and the movements were calculated. Standardized values of three parameters, betaL power, median power frequency (MPF), and $D_2$ were derived by calculation based on the number of animals showing the movement in response to a tail clamp. The betaL power had the largest correlation coefficient to spontaneous movement and to the response to a tail clamp than any other band parameter. MPF had a better correlation with the movement than 90% spectral edge frequency. Among the dynamic parameters, $D_2$ on the parietal cortex had a better correlation with the movement. The level of deviation and variation of standardized $D_2,$ MPF, and betaL were significant (p<0.01). The order of deviation and variation was; betaL power > MPF > $D_2.$ The correlation dimension serves as a better index for the depth of halothane anesthesia defined in forms of a response to external stimulation.
30명의 건강한 대학생 지원자들이 IADS(International Affective Digital Sounds) 실험에 참여하였다.
The effects of an antipsychotic, chlorpromazine, on the electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed while rats were awake but immobile. The time course and the dose-dependency of the EEG changes were examined. The method of the power spectrum analysis was used to examine the EEG changes by the drug. The bands were divided into delta $(1{\sim}3.5\;Hz),$ theta $(3.5{\sim}8\;Hz),$ alpha $(8{\sim}13\;Hz),$ beta1 $(13{\sim}21\;Hz),$ beta2 $(21{\sim}30\;Hz)$ and gamma $(30{\sim}50\;Hz).$ In rats, the low dose of chlropromazine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a significant increase in the power of the beta1 band. The higher doses (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a significant increase in the power of the delta, theta, alpha and beta1 bands, and the decrease in the power of the gamma band. The powers of the bands changed dose-dependently. Then, the authors discussed whether the EEG effects produced by a drug are associated with the accompanying behavioral changes specifically.
Intensity of background noise is a factor significantly affecting both subjective evaluation of experienced stress level and associated electroencephalographic (EEG) responses during mental load in noisy environments. In the study on 27 subjects we analyzed the influence of the background white noise (WN) intensity on psychophysiological responses during a word recognition test. Electrocortical activity were recorded during baseline resting state and 40 s long performance on 3 similar Korean word recognition tests with different intensities of background WN (55, 70 and 85 dB).. An important finding in terms of physiological reactivity was similarity of all physiological response profiles between 55 and 70dB WN, i.e., none of physiological variables differentiated the two conditions, while 85dB WN resulted in a significantly different profile of reactions (higher fast beta power in EEG spectra). This condition was characterized by highest subjective rating of experienced stress, had more fast beta activity and had tendency of right hemisphere dominance, emphasizing the role of brain lateralization in negative affect control.
Hemispheric asymmetry in prefrontal activation have been proposed in two decades ago, as measured by electroencephalographic (EEG) power in the theta band (4-8Hz), is related to reactivity to affectively pleasure audio stimuli. In this study, we designed an emotional audio stimulus experiment in order to verify frontal EEG asymmetry by analyzing ERSP results. Thirty healthy college students volunteered the stimulus experiment with the standard IADS affective sounds. These affective sound clips are classified in three emotion states, happy, neutral and fear. ERSP image results revealed that there are the stronger responses of high arousal (fear and happy) in the left prefrontal lobe, while the stronger responses of low arousal (neutral) in the right pre-frontal lobe. However, the high pleasure emotions (happy) can elicit greater relative right EEG activity, while the low and middle pleasure emotions (fear and neutral) can elicit the greater relative left EEG activity. Additionally, the most response differences of theta band have been found out in the medial frontal lobe, which is proved as the frontal midline theta.
The display of biological signals in monitors often involves a multirate sampling operation which consists of decimation and intenolation. All electroencephalographic (EEG) samples of 10 to 30 seconds must be displayed in the computer screen to keep the aspect ratio of the paper polygraph output. Since the current affordable display technology plots at most 2,000 pixels per row, some samples need to be discarded. This paper studies methods to perform this operation characterizing them from the signal processing viewpoint and compares the display quality among several decimations. Experimental results show that a nonlinear operation such as the peak detection could be preferable than the canonical linear filtering to reduce aliasing.
Harmful algae blooms have become a serious environmental problem in major river basins in Korea. They are known to produce various algal organic matters (AOMs) including intracellular organic matters (IOMs) and extracellular organic matters (EOMs). Generally AOMs cannot be easily removed by coagulation/flocculation process in conventional drinking water plants. AOMs produced by blue-green algae also include various toxins such as Microcystins, Anatoxin-a, and Saxitoxin known to have harmful effects on living organisms in aquatic environment. In this study, toxic effects of EOMs produced by three different algae species (Microcystis sp., Anabaena sp., and Oscillatoria sp.) on zebrafish were investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) recording method, a technology for recording brain activity. Electroencephalographic changes in zebrafish revealed that a low EOM had a negative effect on zebrafish compared to both Anabaena sp. and Oscillatoria sp. at 30 ppm EOM exposures. This result might be due to Microcystins present in EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. As a result of power spectrum density anallysis, exposure to EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. caused a state of vigilance in zebrafish. This EEG based toxicity test can be used to examine effects of harmful materials at low levels on living organisms in an aquatic system.
