  • In this study, The cation exchange membrane and the anion exchange membrane affect in electrical conduction of metal fuel cell was investigated. Magnesium material as anode electrode and the NaCl solution dissolved with 5~15wt% as electrolyte were used for the metal fuel cell. It was found that magnesium slag where flows toward the air electrode was suppressed by using ion exchange membrane. The open circuit voltage variation during discharge has very flat pattern by using ion exchange membrane, but the case which is not the exchange membrane, the open circuit voltage increased according to time. When using the anion exchange membrane, the electric current was higher case of the cation exchange membrane, as a result of higher equivalent conductivity in anion Cl-. The cation exchange membrane was observed with the fact that the output power is excellent in compared with anion exchange membrane.

  • We investigated the electrochemical behavior of an electrode coated with a nickel hexacyanoferrate/graphene oxide (NiPB/GO) composite to evaluate its potential use for the electrochemical separation of radioactive Cs as a promising approach for reducing secondary Cs waste after decontamination. The NiPB/GO-modified electrode showed electrochemically switched ion exchange capability with excellent selectivity for Cs over other alkali metals. Furthermore, the repetitive ion insertion and desertion test for assessing the electrode stability showed that the electrochemical ion exchange capacity of the NiPB/GO-modified electrode increased further with potential cycling in 1 M of $NaNO_3$. In particular, this electrochemical treatment enhanced Cs uptake by nearly two times compared to that of NiPB/GO and still retained the ion selectivity of NiPB, suggesting that the electrochemically treated NiPB/GO composite shows promise for nuclear wastewater treatment.

  • We fabricated a composite carbon electrode to remove nitrate ions selectively from a mixed solution of anions. The electrode was fabricated by coating the surface of a carbon electrode with the nitrate-selective anion exchange resin (BHP55, Bonlite Co.) powder. We performed capacitive deionization (CDI) experiments on a mixed solution containing chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions using a BHP55 cell constructed with the fabricated electrode. The removal of nitrate ions in the BHP55 cell was compared to that of a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell constructed with ion exchange membranes. The total quantity of ions adsorbed in BHP55 cell was $38.3meq/m^2$, which is 31% greater than that of MCDI cell. In addition, the number of nitrate adsorption in the BHP55 cell was $15.9meq/m^2$ (42% of total adsorption), 2.1 times greater than the adsorption in the MCDI cell. The results showed that the fabricated composite carbon electrode is very effective in the selective removal of nitrate ions from a mixed solution of anions.

  • Chloromethylated polysulfone(CMPSf) and a number of mono- and diamine compounds were used to prepare anion-exchange membranes(AEMs) and an ionomer binder solution. The properties of the AEMs were investigated such as $OH^-$ conductivity, water content and dimension stability. Chloromethylation and amination of PSf were optimized in terms of the properties. Membrane-electrode assemblies were fabricated using anion-exchange membranes and the ionomer binder for solid alkaline fuel cells and direct borohydride fuel cells.

  • The motion of a conductive spherical particle under uniform electric field is investigated in order to find a suitable method for removing the conducting solid impurities contained in liquid plastic. When the positive dc voltage applied to the upper electrode, the vertical up-and-down motion of a charged particle by electrostatic force is observed by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a high-speed video camera. The experimental data of the static threshold voltage by which the particle starts to move toward the counter electrode in air or silicone oil are in good agreement with theoretical value. When the applied voltage is larger than the static threshold voltage, the particle motion pattern in silicone oil consists of four stages: upward motion, stopping at the upper electrode, downward motion and stopping at the lower electrode. The stopping motion on the electrode is thought to be caused by the liquid flow accompanied by the particle motion. The particle charge calculated by integrating the pulse current, which is generated by the charge exchange between the electrode and the particle, is approximately 0.1~0.25 times of the theoretical value. This study is expected to help understand the electric properties of microparticles in oil circuit breaker (OCB) and oil transformer and improve their performance and longevity.

  • It is difficult to treat wastewater involved in heavy metal in electroplating industry. Recently, many industries adopt the clean technology to prevent production of pollutant in the process or reuse after the appropriate pollutant treatment. In this study, we estimate the ability of recovery of nickel and the efficiency using lab-scale ion exchange and electrodialysis process with electroplating industry wastewater. In the ion exchange experiments with 5 types of resin, the result showed that S 1467(gel-type strong acidic cation exchange resin) has the highest exchange capacity. And it showed that the 4 N HCl has the highest in regeneration efficiency and maximum concentration in the regeneration experiments with various kinds md concentration of the regenerant. During the electrodialysis experiments, we varied the current density, the concentration of electrode rinse solution, the flow rate of concentrate and electrode rinse solution in order to find the optimum operating condition. As a result, we obtained $250A/m^2$ of current density, 2 N $H_2SO_4$ of concentration of electrode rinse solution, 30 mL/min of flow rate of concentrate and electrode rinse solution as the best operating conditions. We performed the scale-up experiments on the basis of ion exchange and electrodialysis experiments. And we obtained the experimental result that exchange capacity of S 1467 was 1.88 eq/L resin, and regeneration efficiency was 93.7% in the ion exchange scale-up experiment, we also got the result that concentration and dilution efficiency increased, and current efficiency kept constant in the scale-up experiments.

  • Electrochemical Ion Exchang(EIX) electrode containing Amberlite IRP-64 as a cation ion exchange resin and Stylene-Buthylene-Rubber(SBR) as a binder was fabricated by the compressed diecasting method. The adsorption and elution characteristics in copper sulfate solution were investigated at the various electrode potentials and electrolyte pHs. In the adsorption process, it was found that the maximum adsorption rate of copper was obtained at -1800 mV and the ratio of adsorption was 92% during 90 min. In the elution process, the elution rate of copper was increased in proportion to anodic potential in the present experimental range and the ratio of elution was 88% during 50 mins at 3600 mV. The adsorption and elution processes were significantly affected by the variation of local pH in the vicinity of electrochemical ion exchange electrode. The higher performances of adsorption and elution were elution were obtained at basic and acidic eletrolytes.

  • A solid state Hg(Au)/HgO reference electrode was prepared utilizing gold amalgam solid particles. Solid fine powder of the gold amalgam was prepared by chemical reduction of Au(III) with NaBH4 followed by reduction of Hg(II) in the presence of gold fine particles. The solid content in the suspension of the gold amalgam particles and fine mercury oxide particles in DMF containing PVC was precipitated by the addition of a large amount of water to give solid Hg(Au)/HgO/PVC mixture. After drying, the mixture was pressure-molded to a physically stable Hg(Au)/HgO composite reference electrode material. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrode as a reference electrode were very similar to an ordinary Hg/HgO reference electrode. The electrode material can be molded and fabricated in any desired shape and size. The surface can be renewed by a simple polishing process whenever contaminated or deactivated. The applicability of the electrode in the electrochemical detection of carbohydrates after anion exchange separation was evaluated.

  • This paper presents a novel simple method for introducing gold nanoparticles in a poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) polymer layer over a glassy carbon (GC) electrode with the aim of forming a tunable electrochemical interface against a cationic ruthenium complex. Initially, AuCl4 ? ions were spontaneously incorporated into a polymer layer containing positively charged pyridine rings in an acidic media by ion exchange. A negative potential was then applied to electrochemically reduce the incorporated AuCl4 ? ions to gold nanoparticles, which was confirmed by the FE-SEM images. The PVP layer with an appropriate thickness over the electrode blocked electron transfer between the electrode and the solution phase for the redox reactions of the cationic Ru(NH3)6 2+ ions. However, the introduction of gold nanoparticles into the polymer layer recovered the electron transfer. In addition, the electron transfer rate between the two phases could be tuned by controlling the number density of gold nanoparticles.
