A thinner is used to improve the multi-walled carbon nano-tube (CNT) and carbon black (CB) dispersion in a polymer matrix and to make a soft electrode. The electrical and mechanical properties of the soft electrodes are investigated as functions of CNT, CB and thinner content. The optimal mixing condition for the electrode is thinner 80, CNT 3.5, CB 18 (phr) on the basis of matrix (KE-12). The specific resistance of that is 73 (${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$), and tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation of that is 0.45 MPa, 0.21 MPa, and 184%, respectively. Also, a simple structure of the actuator with an optimized electrode and elastomer is fabricated and its characteristic is evaluated. At the operating voltage 25 kV, the displacement of an elastomer KE-12 is 2.24 mm, and that of an elastomer KE-12 with thinner 50 (phr) is 4.05 mm. It shows a higher displacement compared to that of 3M 4910 which has similar modulus. The actuator made with elastomer and electrode of the same material (KE-12) may have advantages for fatigue life and application.
ZITO/Ag/ZITO multilayer transparent electrodes at room temperature on glass substrates were prepared using RF/DC magnetron sputtering. Transparent conductive films with a sheet resistance of 9.4 Ω/㎡ and a transmittance of 83.2% at 550 nm were obtained for the multilayer structure comprising ZITO/Ag/ZITO (100/8/42 nm). The sheet resistance and transmittance of ZITO/Ag/ZITO multilayer films meant that they would be highly applicable for use in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC)-based smart windows due to the ability to effectively block infrared rays (heat rays) and thereby act as an energy-saving smart glass. Effects of the thickness of the PDLC layer and the intensity of ultraviolet light (UV) on electro-optical properties, photopolymerization kinetics, and morphologies of difunctional urethane acrylate-based PDLC systems were investigated using new transparent conducting electrodes. A PDLC cell photo-cured using UV at an intensity of 2.0 mW/c㎡ with a 15 ㎛-thick PDLC layer showed outstanding off-state opacity, good on-state transmittance, and favorable driving voltage. Also, the PDLC-based smart window optimized in this study formed liquid crystal droplets with a favorable microstructure, having an average size range of 2~5 ㎛ for scattering light efficiently, which could contribute to its superior final performance.
Self-sensing was evaluated for carbon nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with two different aspect ratios via electro-micromechanical technique and wettability test. Volumetric electrical resistance was measured to evaluate the comparative dispersion degree indirectly and it decreased due to the increase of electric contacts with increasing CNF concentration. The dispersion degree was evaluated indirectly by calculating coefficient of variation (COV) of volumetric electrical resistance. The CNF type A with a high aspect ratio showed better self-sensing than the case of CNF type B with a short aspect ratio. The CNF type B/epoxy composite showed little self-sensing at a concentration higher than 2 vol% probably due to poor dispersion. The apparent modulus of CNF type B was higher than that of CNF type A due to the orientation effect and the high surface area. The thermodynamic work of adhesion was consistent with the result of apparent modulus.

This study aims at measuring electrical and rheological properties of cosmetic emulsions on the skin under shear flow. The effects of volume ratio and surfactants on structural changes of emulsions were examined by determining the changes of electrical resistance, viscosity, and morphology. As the ratio of the internal phase increased, the phase inversion occurred more quickly. The viscosity change was found to increase with increasing of the variation of electrical resistance of the emulsions. This phenomenon may be caused by decreased resistant force against the shear flow because of the breakdown of the internal phase. Surfactants a]so played a key ro]e on phase transition of emulsions. It is likely that polymeric surfactants anchoring on the emulsion surface reinforced the interfacial mechanical strength. As the concentration of surfactants increased, the phase transition occurred more slowly. It has been demonstrated that the phase changes of emulsions under shear flow can be monitored on the real-time basis by using a JELLI$\^$TM/ chip system, a combination of conductiometry and rheometry. Our approach is expected to a useful experimental tool for predicting the phase transition of the cosmetic products during skin application.
Optimal dispersion and fabrication conditions of carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in phenolic resin were determined by electrical resistance measurement; and interfacial property was investigated between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites by electro-micromechanical techniques. Wettability of carbon fiber was improved significantly after plasma treatment. Surface energies of carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since surface activation of carbon fiber, the advancing contact angle decreased from $65^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$ after plasma treatment. It was consistent with static contact angle results of carbon fiber. Work of adhesion between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites was higher than that without modification. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and apparent modulus also increased with plasma treatment of carbon fiber.

The aim of this study was to confirm the feasibility of the electro-coagulation process as a pre-treatment for the membrane separation of anaerobic digestion effluents to minimize membrane fouling. The reduction of membrane fouling was evaluated according to the number of electrodes (immersed surface area of electrodes), current density and contact time. In the case of the small surface area of electrodes, the increased electric field strength resulted in a soluble COD increase due to the destruction of the microbial flocs and/or cells, whereas large changes in the soluble COD were not observed in the case of the high surface area of electrodes. On the other hand, the T-P concentration decreased as a result of the precipitation of aluminum ions and phosphates. The membrane permeation flux increased and the fouling resistance (Rc+Rf) decreased with increasing electric current density. Although the particle size of the anaerobic digestion effluent increased slightly, it was not related directly to the reduced fouling phenomena. The main mechanism for the enhanced flux was attributed to the inorganic particulate produced during electrocoagulation, such as $AlPO_4$, which acted as a dynamic membrane deposited on the membrane surface.

Composite plating is a method of co-deposition of plating layer with metallic and/or non-metallic particles to improve the plating layer properties such as high corrosion resistance and photolysis of organic compounds. The properties of nickel-ceramic composite plating are significantly depend on the surface characteristics of co-deposited particles as well as the quantity in electrolyte. In this study, Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coating layer was produced by electrodeposition technique from non-aqueous eletrolyte and its surface characteristics as well as photolytic properties were investigated. The amounts of immobilized $TiO_2$ particles increased with increasing the initial $TiO_2$ particles contents in the bath. Samples electroplated with the current density of $0.5\;A/dm^2$ showed the significantly improved homogeneous $TiO_2$ particles distribution. The corrosion resistance of Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coating layer also improved with increaing the amounts of $TiO_2$ particles. Etched sample showed about 10% increased photolytic rate of organic matter compare to that of the non-etched.

The mechanical and electrical properties of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ electro conductive ceramic composites were investigated as functions of the transition metal of $TiB_2$. The result of phase analysis for the SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H). $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density showed the lowest 84.8% for the SiC-$TiB_2$ composites added with 39vol.%$TiB_2$. Owing to crack deflection, crack bridging and YAG of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest value of $7.8\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 39vol.%$TiB_2$ under a pressureless annealing at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the SiC-27vol.%$TiB_2$ composites was negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR), and the electrical resistivity of the besides SiC-27vol.%$TiB_2$ composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

In this study, the degradation mechanism of mounted chip resistors with Ag-epoxy isotropic conductive adhesives (ICAs) under the humidity exposure ($85^{\circ}C$/85%RH) was examined by electrical resistance change and microstructural study. The effect of the chloride content in Ag-epoxy ICA on joint stability was also examined. The increasing range of the electrical resistance in the typical ICA joint was greater than that in the low Cl content ICA joint. In the case of the typical ICA joint, Sn oxides such as SnO, $SnO_2$, and Sn-Cl-O were formed inhomogeneously on the surface of the Sn plating during the $85^{\circ}C$/85%RH test. In contrast, no Sn-Cl-O was found in the low Cl content ICA joint during the $85^{\circ}C$/85%RH. It is suggested that Cl in Ag-epoxy ICA accelerate the electrical degradation of Sn plated chip components joined with Ag-epoxy ICA.

An evaporated Ti/Pd/Ag contact system is most widely used to make high-efficiency silicon solar cells, however, the system is not cost effective due to expensive materials and vacuum techniques. Commercial solar cells with screen-printed contacts formed by using Ag paste suffer from a low fill factor and a high shading loss because of high contact resistance and low aspect ratio. Low-cost Ni and Cu metal contacts have been formed by using electroless plating and electroplating techniques to replace the Ti/Pd/Ag and screen-printed Ag contacts. Ni/Cu alloy is plated on a silicon substrate by electro-deposition of the alloy from an acetate electrolyte solution, and nickel-silicide formation at the interface between the silicon and the nickel enhances stability and reduces the contact resistance. It was, therefore, found that nickel-silicide was suitable for high-efficiency solar cell applications. The Ni contact was formed on the front grid pattern by electroless plating followed by anneal ing at $380{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for $15{\sim}30$ min at $N_{2}$ gas to allow formation of a nickel-silicide in a tube furnace or a rapid thermal processing(RTP) chamber because nickel is transformed to NiSi at $380{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The Ni plating solution is composed of a mixture of $NiCl_{2}$ as a main nickel source. Cu was electroplated on the Ni layer by using a light induced plating method. The Cu electroplating solution was made up of a commercially available acid sulfate bath and additives to reduce the stress of the copper layer. The Ni/Cu contact was found to be well suited for high-efficiency solar cells and was successfully formed by using electroless plating and electroplating, which are more cost effective than vacuum evaporation. In this paper, we investigated low-cost Ni/Cu contact formation by electroless and electroplating for crystalline silicon solar cells.
