  • A noncollinear-phase-matching cone of second harmonic generation(SHG) was observed in a LiNbO3 crystal doped with l mol% MgO. Birefringence refractive indices can be accurately evaluated by analysing the temperature phase matching characteristic for SHG combined with the measurement of the half cone angle. The electro-optic coefficient can also be determined form the observed change of the half cone angle when a DC electric field is applied along the optic axis.

  • We report on an analog electro-optic effect in a nonchiral smectic C (NSC) liquid crystal (LC) mode with negative dielectric anisotropy in a transverse electrode configuration. Two-dimensional numerical simulations are executed to evaluate the display performances. The analog gray scales in the NSC LC mode are obtained in a dielectrically driving scheme.

  • Polymer dispersed liquid crystal mode can be classified into two cases, normally scattering mode (NS) and normally transparent (NT) mode according to an initial state. Electro-optic characteristic NS/NT PDLC mode can be improved by controlling the factors to influence the phase separation. In case of NS PDLC mode, we inspected change of a phase separation as a function of curing temperature for the mixture of E7 and NOA65 with different ratios. When the LC concentration is less than polymer such as LC : NOA65 = 40 : 60wt%, the PDLC cell is influenced strongly by the curing temperature. However, when LC concentration is much less than polymer such as LC : NOA65 : 80 : 20wt%, it is influenced slightly by the curing temperature. In case of NT PDLC mode, we observed change of a phase separation as a function of the ratio of the mixture and UV conditions such as curing temperature, UV intensity The cell made with strong UV intensity and curing temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, in case that the ratio of LC to polymer is 70:30wt%, showed good electro-optic characteristics.

  • We report experimental results demonstrating a novel metal defined polymer optical waveguide with a low loss in electro-optic polymers for the first time. The polymer optical waveguides are created using a metal film on the top of upper cladding without any conventional etching process. The fabricated waveguides have an excellent lateral optical mode confinement at both 1.31 ${\square}m$ and 1.55 ${\square}m$ wavelength, resulting in a fiber-to lens optical insertion loss of ~ 7 dB at 1.55 ${\square}m$ and ~4.5 dB at 1.31 ${\square}m$ wavelength in a 3.5cm total length for TM polarizations, respectively. We also present the optical loss dependence of the waveguide as a function of optical wavelengths. These results may be used in the complex design of integrated polymer optical circuits that need simpler and cheaper fabrication process.

  • In this paper, we propose a silicon-based electro-optic (EO) modulator which can modulate a sign of a topological charge number l of |l|=1 orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode. The proposed EO modulator consists of position-dependent doped Si waveguide core and undoped SiO2, cladding, which enables control of the effective index and propagation loss of two OAM constitutive eigenmodes. The modulator functions as OAM mode maintaining waveguide at -0.33V and as topological charge sign inverter at 10V. The output OAM mode purity is calculated through electric field distribution, showing high purity of |l|>0.92 in both cases.

  • We fabricated a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) cell using LC with negative dielectric anisotropy and UV curable monomer exhibiting transparent state initially (called normally transparent (NT)) and studied the electro-optic characteristics. The NT PDLC cell made with the ratio of LC : monomer = 70/30 wt%, curing temperature of 20 $^{\circ}C$ and strong UV intensity of 198 ㎽/$\textrm{cm}^2$ had high contrast ratio and showed good electro-optic characteristics. In this condition, LC is aligned vertically on the substrate due to the vertical alignment layer and the polymer made with the UV exposure does not influence the alignment of the LC much. Therefore, the transmittance at the zero voltage is very high and the scattering state of the cell is good after applying the voltage because LC with negative dielectric anisotropy tries to align perpendicular to the field. And also, the NT PDLC cell showed better viewing angle characteristics than that in the normally scattering (NS) PDLC.

  • In this paper, we report that selective etching on N-polar face by EC (electro-chemical)-etching effect on the reduction of bowing and strain of FS (free-standing)-GaN substrates. We applied the EC-etching to concave and convex type of FS-GaN substrates. After the EC-etching for FS-GaN, nano porous structure was formed on N-polar face of concave and convex type of FS-GaN. Consequently, the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN substrate was decreased but the bowing in the concave type of FS-GaN substrate was increased. Furthermore, the FWHM (full width at half maximum) of (1 0 2) reflection for the convex type of FS-GaN was significantly decreased from 601 to 259 arcsec. In the case, we confirmed that the EC-etching method was very effective to reduce the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN and the compressive stress in N-polar face of convex type of FS-GaN was fully released by Raman measurement.

  • Electro Explosive Devices can be susceptible to electromagnetic interference. When these components are exposed to external electromagnetic fields, it may cause to induce sufficient current to generate enough heat for an inadvertent detonation. It is almost impossible to monitor the event of firing throughout the electromagnetic environment test. The survivability of EED for hazards of electromagnetic radiation is investigated. A fiber optic sensor is installed near the bridge wire after removing explosive material in order to measure the induced current on the bridge wire. The length of lead-wire of the EED fabricated is around 15 cm.
