  • The optimal woodchip production system was developed and the production cost of a forest woodchip fuel was calculated for utilizing the pitch pine, which covers around 480,000ha nationwide. the marginal price of the woodchip fuel considering the factor of supply price, electricity and heat selling price as well as capacity factor were suggested and the economic sensitivity analysis was conducted for various scenario. The most important variable which determine economic feasibility was a fuel cost for the power generation facility. If the electricity price is higher than the current SMP(System Marginal Price) or the capacity factor is higher than 80%, there fully is a benefit to consume the woodchip fuels produced in the suggested production system in this study. In addition, the additional benefit becomes more obvious when considering REC(Renewable Energy Certificate) and CDM(Clean Development Mechanism). Therefore, it is strongly suggested for domestic power generation sector to utilize the forest biomass fuel to achieve the obligatory target of RPS.

  • Recently the power system consists of the more complicated structure, due to increase of power demands. In this circumstance, the congestion and loss capacity in transmission line is also increased. Accordingly, the investment planning of transmission system is required to reduce the congestion and loss of the transmission line. This paper proposes a method to compute the congestion and loss costs which are the key elements in economic assessment of the power system planning. And the benefit of market participants in CBP (Cost Based Pool) is computed. To demonstrate the efficient of the suggested methods, these methods are applied to peak load system of 2016 in the 4th Basic plan of Long-Them Electricity Supply and Demand.

  • In the present work, for various energy and electricity generating systems to be compared in view of integrated social impacts, nuclear, coal-fired, heavy oil-fired, and LNG, and hydroelectricity systems are considered as electricity generating options. The following assessment factors are selected: economic effect, health effect, environmental effect, and benefit at the national level. As a preliminary study, these factors are represented as power generation cost, estimated mortality, Carbon Dioxide gas emission, and fuel supply stability, respectively. For integrated representation of a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem, radar charts are introduced to facilitate a comparative recognition of estimates. In the near future, based on the estimates, a MCDM methodology for both qualitative and quantitative comparison will be developed.

  • There are many successful cases in power interconnection among European and South American countries. However, that is not the case in Northeast Asian countries. Even though there will be a considerable benefit in power interconnection in Northeast Asian countries, there will be some difficulties due to various interest relationship and constraints among countries in Northeast Asia. GTMax(Generation and Transmission Maximization) Program is a very useful tool to analyze competitive electricity market and power interconnection developed by Argonne National Laboratory under the Department of Energy in the USA. This study tried to verify applicability and usefulness by GTMax model to domestic electric power system and power transfer from Russia Far East by power interconnection. When the power by importing from Russia is 2,000MW(around 2% of domestic installed capacity in 2017), there is no impact on domestic electricity market because of small power transfer. The power by importing should be large enough for achieving greater cost reduction by power interconnection. Besides, it would be better to supply power to Kyung-In region directly in reducing overall cost when the power by importing from Russia are sold at low price. In the case of interconnecting Young-Dong region, if it is not possible to upgrade transmission line with power transfer capabilities between Young-Dong and Kyung-In region, then the power by importing from Russia can replace the power produced in Jung-Bu region and the relative benefit of importing power can be reduced.

  • This paper is the second part of a literature review describing the current status of biomass energy use in the USA. The bioenergy technologies that convert biomass resources to a form of energy were presented, in particular focused on existing coal fired boiler, high efficiency gasification combined cycle. We presented latest biomass power energy supply, economic issues such as its production and plant investment cost in the Part I. In the Part II, our review summarized policy and market issues for electricity consumers, benefits from biomass power which could offer an alternative to conventional energy sources in the form of environmental, rural economic growth, and national energy security in the USA.

  • Small scale hydropower is one of most attractive and cost-effective energy technologies for installation within sewage treatment plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a semi-kaplan micro-hydropower (MHP) system for application to sewage treatment plants with high flow fluctuations and a low head. The semi-kaplan MHP is equipped with an adjustable runner blade, and is without a guide vane, so as to reduce the incidence of mechanical problems. A MHP rating 13.4 kWp with a semi-kaplan turbine has been considered for Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant, and this installation is estimated to generate 86.8 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply electricity to over 25 households, and equivalent to an annual reduction of 49 ton $CO_2$. The semi-kaplan turbine showed a 90.2% energy conversion efficiency at the design flow rate of 0.35 $m^3/s$ and net head of 4.7 m, and was adaptable to a wide range of flow fluctuations. Through the MHP operation, approximately 2.1% of total electricity demand of Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant will be achievable. Based on financial analysis, an exploiting MHP is considered economically acceptable with an internal rate of return of 6.1%, net present value of 15,539,000 Korean Won, benefit-cost ratio of 1.08, and payback year of 15.5, respectively, if initial investment cost is 200,000,000 Korean Won.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a business model that efficiently converts diesel power generation systems to renewable energy microgrids (MG) in large-scale islands. Most of the previous studies on the conversion of renewable energy MG in islands had limitations dealing with efficiency from the perspective of suppliers. However, the microgrid has the characteristic of getting benefits through the interaction between the consumer and the supplier. In addition, the efficient MG business model from the perspective of new institutional economics is a structure in which consumers and suppliers jointly participate. Therefore, this study assumed that the MG business model in which the supplier's MG and the consumer's community solar participated would benefit all participants, and verified the assumptions using domestic island data. In terms of supplier investment, the cost of power supply (LCOE) of assumed model was calculated to be 14.0% lower than that of the diesel model and 3.7% lower than that of the supplier-only MG model. From the perspective of consumer investment, electricity bills are expected to be reduced by more than 200,000 won per household per year through self-generation of solar power. Social benefits are expected to reduce external environmental costs. The CO2 emissions of the assumed model were calculated to be 39.5% lower than the diesel model and 1.5% lower than the supplier-only MG model. Therefore, the MG business model with consumer participation proposed in this study is expected to be an efficient alternative to renewable energy MG conversion in domestic islands, and is meaningful as an energy plan that improves the benefits of local residents.
