  • Cause of struggling to escape from dependency of fossil fuels, the fuel cell and the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) draw attention in the all of the world. Especially, the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) systems have been anticipated for next generation's energy supplying system, and we can predict the PHEV will enlarge the market share in the next few years to reduce not only the air pollution in the metropolis but the fuel-expenses of commuters. This paper presents simulation results about the strategy of smart charging system for PHEV in the residential house which has 1 kW PEMFC cogeneration system. The smart charging system has a function of recommending the best time to charge the battery of PHEV by the lowest energy cost. The simulated energy cost for charging the battery based on the electricity demand data pattern in the house. The house which floor area is $132\;m^2$ (40 pyeong.). In these conditions, the annual gasoline, electricity, and total energy cost to fuel the PHEV versus Conventional Vehicle (CV) have been simulated in terms of cars' average life span in Korea.

함수 주성분 분석을 이용한 한국의 장기 에너지 수요예측 (Long-term Energy Demand Forecast in Korea Using Functional Principal Component Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 장기 전력 수요와 GDP 사이의 소득계수를 시간과 GDP의 값에 따라 변화하도록 모형화한 Chang et al.(2016)에 기반을 두어 장기 에너지 수요의 예측에 관련된 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서는 장기 에너지와 GDP 사이의 소득계수를 함수로 표현하고, 함수 주성분 분석(Functional Principal Component Analysis)을 통하여 함수계수(Functional Coefficient)를 예측하고 이를 장기 에너지 수요 예측에 적용한다. 또한 함수계수를 비모수적으로 추정할 때 너비띠 모수를 예측 실험 오차를 최소화하도록 설정하는 방식을 제안하였고 개별 국가의 함수계수 변화 패턴을 반영하여 개별 국가의 특수성을 반영하는 예측 방법도 제시한다. 실증분석에서는 전 세계 에너지 데이터를 이용하여 한국의 장기 에너지 수요 예측을 본 논문에서 제시한 방법으로 예측하고, 기존의 방법들 보다 안정적인 장기 에너지 수요 예측이 가능함을 보였다.

  • The accelerating of industrial development causes electricity demand to increase. By that power equipments need high power, multi function and intelligence. Also consumers demand for guarantee power supplying of good quality and reasonable operating equipment. Also they require for reliance and stabilization of power facility. Therefore preventive maintenance of electric installation must be developed and improvement of domestic technical level is needed in the maintenance management of equipment. The diagnosis of trouble existence is technique that compares steady state with unusual condition, whereas the prediction technique makes a diagnosis of remaining equipments life. It is difficult for us to diagnose trouble existence of electric installation and to develop prediction method in building because of a wide scope for electric installation in building. And in this paper we will investigate diagnosis and prediction method for only switch part of electric installation in building.

Impact of User Convenience on Appliance Scheduling of a Home Energy Management System

  • Regarding demand response (DR) by residential users (R-users), the users try to reduce electricity costs by adjusting their power consumption in response to the time-varying price. However, their power consumption may be affected not only by the price, but also by user convenience for using appliances. This paper proposes a methodology for appliance scheduling (AS) that considers the user convenience based on historical data. The usage pattern for appliances is first modeled applying the copula function or clustering method to evaluate user convenience. As the modeling results, the comfort distribution or representative scenarios are obtained, and then used to formulate a discomfort index (DI) to assess the degree of the user convenience. An AS optimization problem is formulated in terms of cost and DI. In the case study, various AS tasks are performed depending on the weights for cost and DI. The results show that user convenience has significant impacts on AS. The proposed methodology can contribute to induce more DR participation from R-users by reflecting properly user convenience to AS problem.

  • With the propagation and spread of the new regeneration energy and increase in electricity demand, power systems tend to be decentralized, and accordingly, the use of a power system stabilizer tends to expand for the stabilization of the distribution system. Thus, typical power system stabilizer, Static Var Compensator (SVC) is developed on a variety of topologies. In addition, the trend of technology leads from SVC to Static Synchronous Compensator(STATCOM) technology development. Recently, to overcome STATCOM's conversion losses and economic disadvantages, studies of a hybrid method using STATCOM and SVC in parallel have actively been conducted. This study proposes a new Soft-Step Switching method to limit inrush current problematic in Thyristor Controlled Capacitor (TCC) method in SVC function. In addition, to reduce Statcom's capacity, groups of reactive power compensation reactor and condenser for SVC were designed.

  • This paper presents a game theory application for an analysis of uniform price auction in a simplified competitive electricity market and analyzes the properties of Nash equilibrium for various conditions. We have assumed that each generation firm submits his bid to a market in the form of a sealed bid and the market is operated as a uniform price auction. Two firms are supposed to be the players of the market, and we consider the maximum generation quantity constraint of one firm only. The system demand is assumed to have a linear relationship with market clearing prices and the bidding curve of each firm, representing the price at which he has a willingness to sell his generation quantity, is also assumed to have a linear function. In this paper, we analyze the effects of maximum generation quantity constraints on the Nash equilibrium of the uniform price auction. A simple numerical example with two generation firms is demonstrated to show the basic idea of the proposed methodology.

Performance comparison of 10kW scale horizontal axis tidal turbines

  • Horizontal axis tidal turbines are machinery inherited from the principle of wind turbines to enable the application of utilizing ocean's current energy. Its function does not differ from that of wind case, which is to convert fluid's kinetics energy to mechanical torque, therefore generates electricity. Since the ocean has been an enormous source of untapped power, tidal turbines have been being investigated recently to meet human's demand of energy with respect to environment friendly approach. This paper introduces a couple of turbine designs which are anticipated to have high performance. A comparison among recent works on the same topic is also made for validation.

  • Recently, Korea's electric industry has experienced substantial changes in its structure and function including the introduction of competition in the generation sector. Korea is in the early stages of market competition where the market price is determined by generation costs. In the future, the market Price will be determined by generators'bids. Therefore, the generators'profit is determined by market pool price, the prospects of pool price are very important for new capacity investment decision made by generators and IPPS. This study analyzes hourly marginal costs and LOLP considering basic generation mix and characteristics develops the relationship of pool price and Profit by generation-type using the change in reserve margin, and proposes basic direction for profits variation and supply-demand analysis in the electricity market in future.

주택 및 사무용 빌딩 내 전기기기의 전력 수요 패턴 분석 (Power demand pattern analysis for electric appliances in residential and commercial building)

  • Recently, Smart Grid is a emerging topic in power and communication industry. Smart Grid refers to a evolution of the electricity supply infrastructure that monitors, protects, and intelligently optimize the operation of the interconnected elements including various type of generators, power grid, building/home automation system and end-use consumers. In order to successful implementation of Smart Grid, energy management function will be the key factor that coordinates and optimally controls the various loads according to the operating condition and environments, and the load patterns in residential and commercial building will be required as fundamental element for load management. In this study, we collects many types of energy usage data of electric appliances, analyze their load curves, and make the general load patterns for electrical appliance.

스마트에너지하우스 구현을 위한 에너지 수요관리 알고리즘의 개발 (Development of an Energy Management Algorithm for Smart Energy House)

  • Recently, many actions are taking to accelerate progress toward social consensus and implementation of Smart Grid. Smart Grid refers to a evolution of the electricity supply infrastructure that monitors, protects, and intelligently optimize the operation of the interconnected elements including various type of generators, power grid, building/home automation system and end-use consumers. The most distinguished element will be Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that will be installed to every end-use consumer's home or building and optimize the energy consumption of the end-use consumer. The key function of AMI is energy management capability that coordinates and optimally controls the various loads according to the operating condition and environments. In this study, we figure out the basic function of AMI in Smart Energy House that can be defined as a model house implementing in Smart Grid. This paper proposes the energy management algorithm that will be implemented in AMI at Smart Energy House. The paper also show how energy saving in Smart Energy House can be achieved applying the proposed algorithm to an actual house model that has mainly lighting, air-conditioning, TV loads.
