  • The electrical resistivity prospecting method with dipole-dipole array was applied to the Mooreung landfill site in order to survey the existence of leachate around the landfill site. Moreover, if there is leachate within Mooreung landfill site, the analysis of potential pathways to exterior environments was tried. Within the landfill site, the over-all characteristics of the electrical resistivity anomalies suggest that the leachate induced from the landfill materials has infiltrated the basement rock and fill the pores of basement rock in some parts of the landfill site. The consistency of the anomaly locations (left part of each survey line), anomaly geometries, and absolute resistivity value of anomaly through the 3 survey lines suggests that the resistivity anomaly be connected from the upstream to the downstream and correspond to the leachate material. Finally, the result from the electrical resistivity survey line near the gateway of the landfill site suggests that some of the leachate induced from landfill material leaks to the exterior groundwater system. It is necessary that more surveys using both geochemical and geophysical methods should be performed to find out potential pathways and depths of the leachate more precisely.

  • To investigate the applicability of physical prospecting technique in soft ground assessment, the resistivity monitoring data of 6 months are acquired. The Multichannel Analysis Surface Wave (MASW) has been additionally performed to identify the shear wave velocity and strength distribution of soft ground. Moreover, by using the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) and laboratory tests of drilling samples, a relationship with the physical prospect data is checked and the reliability of the physical prospect data is increased. Through these activities, the behavior patterns of soft soil are identified by long term monitoring, and the significant relationship between the shear wave velocity and laboratory tests has been confirmed, both of which can be useful in the surface wave exploration to evaluate the strength of soft ground. Finally, using the geostatistical method, 3-dimensional soil base distribution images are obtained about the combined physical prospecting data with heterogeneous data. Through the studies, the nature of entire area can be determined by long term resistivity monitoring for the soft ground assessment in wider area. It would be more economic and reliable if additional exploring and drilling samples can be analyzed, which can reinforce the assessment.

  • A model study was conducted for the interpretation of simple geologic structures. Experiments were carried out for the cases of two horizontal beds and dipping beds in a water tank by using Wenner and Schlumberger arrays respectively. As a geologic stratum of experimental model, cement be (cement: sand=1:2) of $70cm{\times}60cm{\times}10cm$ was used. It was found out from a preliminary experiment that a measuring sounding of Wenner arrays is one third of the distance between two current electrodes, and Schlumberger arrays is one fourth of the distance which is a half of the value determined by usual method of calculation. Equi-resistivity curves were obtained for the cases of horizontal beds and dipping beds, and mapped on the longitudinal and cross sections of the water tank. These curves delineate the shape and degree of dip of bed to some extent. The calculation of depth to beds by using a master curve is somewhat complicated and inexact. In this study, new method for this calculation using a ${\rho}_a/{\rho}_1-a$ graph was proposed, and turned out that this method is simpler and exact.

  • Electric resistivity monitoring was applied to evaluate the soft ground in reclaimed land in order to figure out the applicability of physical prospecting. For this, electrical resistivity monitoring data were acquired for total three months and analyzed those data with independent inversion, time-lapse inversion, and 4D inversion methods. The result was compared for various inversion methods so as to figure out what showed the soft soil most properly. Moreover, drilling and CPT(Cone Penetration Test) data were also used in order to find out if each of those inversion methods could distinguish either bed rock or the soft soil clearly. And according to the result, time-lapse inversion showed less inversion artifacts than independent inversion, so it could indicate the soft soil better. If data gained for a longer period than three months are used, 4D inversion has been found to be a more efficient analysis method than the time-lapse inversion method. Electrical resistivity monitoring on the soft soil has been found to be a useful method that can analyze the spatio-temporal electric state of the ground serially.

  • Since the depth of tunneling with tunnel boring machine (TBM) becomes deeper and deeper, the expense for site investigation for coring and geophysical survey increases to obtain the sufficient accuracy. The tunnel ahead prediction methods have been introduced to overcome this limitation in the stage of site investigation. Probe drilling can obtain the core and borehole images from a borehole. However, the space in TBM for the probe drilling equipment is restricted and the core from probe drilling cannot reflect the whole tunnel face. Seismic methods such as tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) can forecast over 100 m ahead from the tunnel face though the signal is usually generated using the explosive which can affect the stability of segments and backfill grout. Electromagnetic methods such as tunnel electrical resistivity prospecting system (TEPS) offer the exact prediction for a conductive zone such as water-bearing zone. However, the number of electrodes installed for exploration is limited in small diameter TBM and finally the reduction of prediction ranges. In this study, the theoretical equations for the electrical resistivity survey whose electrodes are installed in the face and side of TBM to minimize the installed electrodes on face. The experimental tests were conducted to verify the derived equations.

  • It is not possible to define the earth's interior because of it complicity. However, it can be interpreted directly and/ or indirectly. Geophysics is the subject of this study. To study the possibility of construction supervision by geophysical method, geophysical prospecting was performed and studied at the SamYang pumping well area in Cheju Island, where, although underground dam was constructed, the saline water invade the pumping well area. This study focuses on the construction supervision by electrical measurements. Two electric resistivity survey lines are installed in the pumping well site, and at each line electric survey was conducted at ebb and flow tides. To increase the data quality SP (self-potential) survey was also performed. As a result the geophysical exploration methods explained the defect of construction well, and It shows that geophysical probe can be a useful tool for the construction supervision.

  • The use of the geophysical method in mining prospecting has been studied in the Asdaf region (South-East of Morocco). The objective of the study is to examine the aptitude of the electrical technique, in this case induced polarization (IP) and electric tomography, combined with the electromagnetic method (VLF), in the exploration of barite . The result obtained by the pseudo-sections of electrical tomography and that of KH filtration highlighted anomalies of resistant contact (greater than 400Ω.m) and of high charge chargeability (5mV / V). These contacts are hosted in less resistant Devonian age shale and sandstone. The resistivity response obtained at their level is characteristic of the venous structures associated with barite mineralization. The direction of the mineralized veins is parallel to the direction of the fractured zones (NE-SW), which indicates that the mineralization in place is due to the tectonic movements of the Hercynian orogeny (from Devonian to Permian). These veins are aligned with the locations of abandoned mine shafts and with surface mining areas. Geophysical technique therefore seems to play a key role in barite mining exploration.

  • The safety diagnosis of cultural assets is Primarily focused on its non-destructiveness. Research on the nondestructive diagnosis and conservation of masonry cultural heritage is the key which is considered by technologic kernel. Geophyscial Prospecting as nondestructive diagnostic technology plays an important role in the characterization of the foundation of stone pagodas. It is natural that understanding of shallow subsurface condition beneath them is essential for their structural safety diagnosis. As an example, the nondestructive geophysical methods were applied to two three-story stone pagodas, Seokgatap (height 10.8 m, width 4.4 m, weight 82.3 ton) and Dabotap (height 10.4 m, width 7.4 m, weight 123.2 ton) which were built in 791 at Bulkuksa temple. An earlier archaeological investigation shows that stone pagodas have experienced severe weathering process and are slightly leaning, which will threaten their stability At the base part of Dabotap, an offset of the stone alignment is also observed. Direct measurements of ultrasonic velocities was introduced for the mechanical properties of the stone The velocity ranges of ultrasonic waves for Dabotap and Seokgatap are 1217${\~}$4403 m/s and 584${\~}$5845 m/s, respectively, and the estimated averages of the uniaxial compressive strength are 463 kg/$cm^2$ and 409 kg/$cm^2$, respectively. Site characteristics, around the pagodas are determined by the measurement of multiple properties such as seismic velocity, resistivity, image of ground-penetrating radar, On the basis of the higher velocity structure, the site of Seokgatap appears to have solider stability than the Seokgatap site. Near the pagodas, higher(up to 2200 $\Omega$m) resistivity is present whereas their outskirts have as low as 200 $\Omega$m. By the combined results of each geophyscial methods, the subsurface boundaries of two stone pagodas are revealed. The Dabotap site is in the form of an octagon having 6-m-long side with the depth of ${\~}$4 m, whereas the Seokgatap site is the 8 ${\times}$ 10 m rectangle with the depth of 3 m. These subsurface structures appear to reflect the original foundations constructed against the stone load of ${\~}8 ton/m^2$. At the subsurface beneath the northeast of each pagoda, low seismic velocity as well as low resistivity is prominent. It is interpreted to represent the weak underground condition which Is the possible cause of the slightly leaning pagodas toward the NNW.

  • The marine seismic prospecting using a research vessel in the shallow sea near the coastal area has certain limits according to the water depth and survey environment. Also, for the electrical resistivity survey at seashore area, one may need a specially designed high-voltage source to penetrate the very conductive surface layer. Therefore, we have conducted a feasibility study on the application of magnetotelluric method (MT), a passive geophysical method, on investigating of shallow marine environment geology. Our study involves both theoretical modeling and field survey at the tidal flat area which represent the very shallow marine environment. We have applied the audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) method to the intertidal deposits of Gunhung Bay, west coast of Korea, and analysed the field data both qualitatively and quantitatively to investigate the morphology and sedimentary stratigraphy of the tidal flat. The inversion of AMT data well reveals the upper sedimentary layer of Holocene intertidal sediments having a range of 13-20 m thickness and the erosional patterns at the unconformable contact boundary. However, the AMT inversion results tend to overestimate the depth of basement (30-50 m) when compared with the seismic section (27-33 m). Since MT responses are not significantly sensitive to the resistivity of middle layer or the depth of basement, the AMT inversion result for basement may have to be adjusted using the comparison with other geophysical information like seismic section or logging data if possible. But, the AMT method can be an effective alternative choice for investigating the seashore area to get important basic informations such as the depositional environment of the tidal flat, sea-water intrusion and the basement structure near the sea shore.
