This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) method to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) for inverters connected in parallel, which increase the capacity of energy storage systems (ESSs). The proposed method is based on subdivided voltage vectors, and the resulting algorithm can be applied to control the inverters. Furthermore, we use more voltage vectors than the conventional MPC algorithm; consequently, the quality of grid currents is improved. Several methods were proposed in order to reduce the CMV appearing during operation and its adverse effects. However, those methods have shown to increase the total harmonic distortion of the grid currents. Our method, however, aims to both avoid this drawback and effectively reduce the CMV. By employing phase difference in the carrier signals to control each inverter, we successfully reduced the CMV for inverters connected in parallel, thus outperforming similar methods. In fact, the validity of the proposed method was verified by simulations and experimental results.
Due to the highly concentrated power plants integrated through the limited transmission lines in Korea, a Special Protection System(SPS) has been applied to stabilize the power systems by instantly tripping the pre-determined generators in a large-scaled power plant when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. Moreover, power outputs of those generators are constrained to avoid any activation of Under Frequency Load Shedding(UFLS) even after those generators are tripped by SPS action. For this, this paper proposes a method for calculating the required capacity of Energy Storage System(ESS) expected to relieve the operating constraints to generators using its fast response for controlling power system frequency. The proposed method uses the generator acceleration energy to derive the stable condition during the SPS action. In addition, its effectiveness is verified by the case studies adopting actual SPS operations in Korean power systems.
This study introduces a new topology to decrease the voltage stress experienced by a 13.56 MHz electrical variable capacitor (EVC) circuit with an asymmetrical switch structure applied to the impedance matching circuit of a radio frequency (RF) plasma system. The method adopts a symmetrical switch structure instead of an asymmetrical one in each of the capacitor's leg in the EVC circuit. The proposed topology successfully reduces voltage stress in the EVC circuit due to the symmetrical charging and discharging mode. This topology can also be applied to the impedance matching circuit of a high-power and high-frequency RF etching system. The target features of the proposed circuit topology are investigated via simulation and experiment. Voltage stress on the switch of the EVC circuit is successfully reduced by more than 40%.
A single and three phase-compatible single-stage EV charger without electrolytic capacitor is proposed in this study. DC battery-charging current is inherently guaranteed in the three-phase grid due to three output currents with a phase shift of 120° between each other. The proposed EV charger can provide a DC battery charging current for the single-phase grid through the integrated active power decoupling circuit without using additional switches. The proposed EV charger ensures ZVS turn-on of all switches with wide grid and battery voltage ranges. The 11 kW prototype of the proposed EV charger demonstrates a peak efficiency of 97.01% and a power density of 5.58 kW/L.
A grid-connected distributed generation system which consists of engine generator, dc link with multiple energy sources and inverter is proposed. All six of the stator leads of the generator, which is a surface mount permanent magnet machine, are brought out to the terminal of the generator. Three leads are connected to the inverter and the others are connected to the utility grid. In this proposed system the power from the engine-generator and the power from dc link can be controlled simultaneously by only one three-phase power converter. A control algorithm for the system is developed and verified by experiment results.
Approximately 520thousand elevators are operating now in Korea, about 40% ~ 60% of the elevator power is generated. In this paper, by using the method of adding regeneration power of the elevator to the grid-tied photo voltaic inverter, PV generation that was dependant on the solar radiation was significantly improved. In order to confirm this, the regeneration power of the elevator has been simulated in 12% of the rating load, and measured the regeneration power of the elevator in the actual condition to assess the differences of it. The 5[kW] hybrid grid-tied photo voltaic invertor has been fabricated to conduct an experiment for the confirmation of the proposing method. The effectiveness of the proposing method has been reassured with the result of experiment that include the transfer interface part of the regeneration power of the elevator.
Large offshore wind farms using high voltage direct current transmission system (HVDC) have been considered and exploited in many countries in the world. The maintenance of the stable operation of wind farm and interconnected system is an important issue, especially in the case of fault. To ensure the stable operation after fault clearance, the PCC voltage must be restored as soon as possible and meet the grid code requirement. This paper will evaluate the PCC voltage recovery ability of a large offshore wind farm as it is connected to a weak grid via a VSC-HVDC.
A novel active damping strategy for the LCL filter resonance is proposed using the grid current and the capacitor voltage. The proposed technique is deduced in the continuous time domain and a discussion for its discrete implementation is presented. According to the proposed technique, instability of the open loop system, which results in non-minimum phase behavior, can be avoided over wide range of resonant frequencies. Moreover, straightforward co-design steps for both the fundamental current regulator and the active damping loops can be used. A numerical example along with experimental results are introduced to validate the proposed strategy performance over wide range of resonant frequencies.
This paper analyzes the losses of the switching device for a full bridge inverter connected to the grid. As the development of power conversion system, losses are dominant factors in judging the efficiency of a system. The losses of a switching device can be divided into switching loss and conduction loss, both of which can be estimated by analyzing periodic switching waveform. The switching loss is generated when the switch is turned on and off, while the conduction loss is generated when the switch is turned on. The estimated losses of the MOSFET switch are compared with the simulation results.
There are many types of grid-connected inverter controllers; Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF)-based controller is the most popular methods. SRF-based controller is capable for reducing both of zero-steady state error and phase delay. However, SRF-based controller has a complex algorithm to apply in real application such as digital processor. Resonant controller is also reduced zero-steady state error, but its transfer function has a high order. In this paper, a simple proportional control is applied for grid connected inverter with LCL filter. LCL filter is a third order system. Applying a simple proportional controller is not increased the order of closed loop transfer function. By this technique, the single phase model is easily obtained. To reduce steady state error, proportional gain is set as high as possible, but it may produce instability. To compromise between a minimum steady state error and stability, the single phase model is evaluate through Root Locus and Bode diagram. PSIM simulation is used to verify the analysis.
