Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed and monitored at the field demonstration test center (FDTC) in Korea in October 2002. Before long-term field testing of installed PV systems, the performances of PV components were evaluated and compared through short-term performance tests of each of the PV system components such as power conditioning system and PV module under standard test conditions. A data acquisition system has been constructed for measuring and analyzing the performance of PV systems to observe the overall effect of environmental conditions on their operation characteristics. Performances of PV systems have been evaluated and analyzed not only for component perspective (PV array, power conditioning unit) but also for global perspective (system efficiency, capacity factor, electrical power energy) by review of the field test and loss factors of the systems. These results indicate that it is highly imperative to develop an optimum design technology of grid connected PV systems. The objective of this paper is not only to evaluate and analyze the performance of domestic PV systems application through long-term field testing at FDTC but also to develop evaluation, analysis and optimum technology for long-term stability and reliability of grid-connected PV systems in Korea.
3kW grid connected PV(photovoltaic) systems have been constructed for evaluating and analyzing performance of PV system at FDTC(field demonstration test center) in Korea, PV systems installed in FDTC have been operating and monitored since November 2002. As climatic and irradiation conditions have been varied through long-term field test, data acquisition system has been constructed for measuring performance of PV system to observe the overall effect of environmental conditions on their operation characteristics. The performance of PV systems has been evaluated and analyzed for component perspective(PV array and power conditioning system) and global perspective(system efficiency, capacity factor, and electrical power energy) by field test. By the results, it is very important to develop optimal design technology of grid connected PV system.
This study presents a strategy using the synchronized output regulation method (SOR) for controlling inverters operating in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. From the view point of networked dynamic systems, SOR involves nodes with outputs that are synchronized but also display a desirable wave shape. Under the SOR strategy, the inverter and grid are treated as two nodes that comprise a simple network. These two nodes work independently under the stand-alone mode. An intermediate mode, here is named the synchronization mode, is emphasized because the transition from the stand-alone mode to the grid-connected mode can be dealt as a standard SOR problem. In the grid-connected mode, the inverter operates in an independent way, in which the voltage reference changes for generalized synchronization where its output current satisfies the required power injection. Such a relatively independent design leads to a seamless transfer between operation modes. The closed-loop system is analyzed in the state space on the basis of the output regulation theory, which improves the robustness of the design. Simulations and experiments are performed to verify the proposed control strategy.

This paper proposes an optimization approach of a grid-connected photovoltaic and wind hybrid energy system including energy storage considering voltage fluctuation in the electricity grid. A techno-economic analysis is carried out in order to minimize the size of hybrid system by considering the benefit-cost. Lithium-ion battery type is used for both managing the electricity selling to the grid and reducing voltage fluctuation. A new technique is developed to limit the voltage perturbation caused by the solar irradiance and the wind speed through determining the state-of-charge of battery for every hour of a day. Improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods, referred to as FC-VACPSO which combines Fast Convergence Particle Swarm Optimization (FCPSO) method and Variable Acceleration Coefficient Based Particle Swarm Optimization (VACPSO) method are used to solve the optimization problem. A comparative study has been performed between standard PSO method and PSO based methods to extract the best size with the benefit cost. A sensitivity analysis has been studied for different kinds and costs of batteries, by considering variable and constant state-ofcharge of battery. The simulations, performed under Matlab environment, yield good results using the FC-VACPSO method regarding the convergence and the benefit cost of the hybrid system.
This paper describes evaluation results of the wind power penetration limit (WPPL) and the wind energy penetration (WEP) in the Mongolian central power system (MCPS). A wind power plant (WPP) in a power system possesses an output power limit because the power system must maintain a balance between the generation and consumption of electricity at all times in order to achieve an adequate level of quality. The instantaneous penetration limit (IPL) of wind generation at a load is determined as the minimum of the three technical constraints: the minimum output, the ramp rate capability, and the spinning reserve of the conventional generating units. In this paper, a WPPL is defined as the maximum IPL divided by the peak load. A maximal variation rate (VR) of wind power is a major factor in determining the IPL, WPPL, and WEP. This paper analyzes the effects of the maximal VR of wind power on the WPPL, WEP, and capacity factor (CF) in the MCPS. The results indicate that a small VR can facilitate a large amount of wind energy while maintaining a high CF with increased wind power penetration.
To analyze influences under open fault conditions in switching devices, an integrated simulation and condition monitoring scheme for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed grid-connected wind turbine system are presented. Among various faults in power electronics components, the open fault in switching devices may arise when the switches are destructed by an accidental over current, or a fuse for short protection is blown out. Under such a faulty condition, the grid-side inverter as well as the generator-side converter does not operate normally, producing an increase of current harmonics, and a reduction in output and efficiency. As an effective way for a condition monitoring of generation system by online basis without requiring any diagnostic apparatus, the estimation schemes for generated voltage, flux linkage, and stator resistance are proposed and the validity of the proposed scheme is proved through comparative simulations.
For the digital control of systems such as grid-connected inverters, measuring inverter output currents accurately is essential. However, current measurement offsets are inevitably generated by current measurement paths and cause DC current components in real inverter output currents. Real inverter output currents with DC components cause the DC-link capacitor voltage to oscillate at the frequency of a utility voltage. For these reasons, current measurement offsets deteriorate the overall system performance. A compensation strategy to eliminate the effect of current measurement offsets in grid-connected inverters is proposed in this study. The validity of the proposed compensation strategy is verified through simulations and experiments. Results show that the proposed compensation strategy improves the performance of grid-connected inverters.
This paper presents an analysis and a novel strategy for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion system under unbalanced grid voltage and non-linear load conditions. A proportional-resonant (PR) current controller is applied in both grid side converter (GSC) and rotor side converter (RSC). The RSC is controlled to mitigate the stator active power and the rotor current oscillations at double supply frequency under unbalanced grid voltage while the GSC is controlled to mitigate ripples in the dc-link voltage and compensate harmonic components of the network current. Simulation results using Psim simulation program are presented for a 2 MW DFIG to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
Environmental issue is one of the key factors to industry area using fossil fuels, because it accelerates the global warming. So it is supposed to reduce greenhouse gases around the developed nations of the world at times go. This issue is especially for the power industry. Under this background, MicroGrid system that consists of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) system, such as natural power system (wind, solar) and fuel-cell, co-generation, also known as CHP (Combined heat and power), has been developed greatly during the last 10 years. This paper adopts optimal model using GAMS to develop methods for conducting an integrated assessment of MicroGrid system.
Recently, preparing the problems in connection with energy and environment, grid-connected power systems have been intensively researched in the world. In general, the output power of grid-connected inverter (GCI) contains noisy components of inverter switching frequency. Moreover, pre-existing grid voltage disturbances degrade the output power quality. The objective of this paper is to make a GCI output high quality power. A robust current control scheme using neural network is presented in thispaper. To show the feasibility of the proposed scheme, some simulation results are provided.
