This study intended to analyze the health promoting behaviors by comparing various factors according to the residence areas(Korea or Japan) of Korean Elderly. and to present basic data in planning systematic and effective programs of health promotion for each residence area. The subjects of this study were 164 Korean elders in Daegu, South Korea, and 164 elders in Aichi prefecture, Japan. Data was collected by interviews and self-administered questionnaires from the 1st to the 20th of April in 2000. The tool for this study was based on Walker et al.(1987)'s Health Promotion lifestyle Profiles (HPLP). The analysis was performed with Cronbach's $x^2-test$, t-test. ANCOVA, Kendal tau, Pearson correlation, and Stepwise Multiple Regression test using SPSS program. The results are as follows: 1. There was a significant difference in occupation($x^2$=41.3. p=0.000), the source of the pocket money($x^2$=114.36. p=0.000) by the residence areas in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. 2. There was a significant difference between the two groups on the health promoting behaviors(t=-8.19. p=0.000). The score of elders group in the South Korean group on health promoting behaviors was 2.32. showing 0.33 lower than that of the elders group in Japan(2.65). 3. ANCOVA involving occupation and the source of pocket money as co-variables. showed significant differences (F=15.37. p=0.000) regarding health promoting behaviors according to the residence areas. 4. In consideration of variables that have an influence on health promoting behavior by residence areas, pocket money occupied 11.5% of health promoting behavior in the elders group in South Korea. In the elders group in Japan, pocket money occupied 18.1% of health promoting behavior and 20.6% including education. The suggestions based on the results of this study are as follows.: 1. It is necessary to develop health promoting programs considering the residence areas of Korean elders. 2. It is necessary to develop social programs for improving the education level and solving pocket money problems, which are the significant factors for the health promoting behavior of Korean elders.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of depression and self-efficacy on health promotion behavior in elders living alone in rural area. Methods: This was a descriptive study. The survey participants were 369 elders living alone in rural area. The period of time for data collection was from June 23 to August 7, 2008. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Depression was found to have a statistically negative correlation with health promotion behavior. Self-efficacy was found to have a statistically positive correlation with health promotion behavior. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promotion behavior was depression. Depression, self-efficacy, number of chronic disease, and economic status accounted for 35.2% of the variance. Conclusion: It is necessary to prepare health promotion programs that can reduce depression level and improve self-efficacy in elders living alone in rural area.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of a convergent web-based educational program on cognitive function, depression, and dementia prevention behavior among elders living in the community. Method: Participants were 16 elders over 65 years of age (8 in the experimental group and 8 in the control group). The educational program was given twice a week for 9 weeks. Results: Cognitive function and dementia prevention behavior improved in the experimental group. Cognitive function and dementia prevention behavior were reduced in the control group compared to the results of the pre-inspection; however, no statistically significant difference was found. As homogeneity test was not conducted previously for the assessment of depression, the assessment was conducted based on covariates, Although no significant difference found between the two groups, depression level did increase in the control group. Conclusion: Findings from this study indicate that the educational program prevented worsening of depression and was effective in reducing depression. For further assessment, it is necessary to conduct long-term research including a revision and supplementation of the contents and length of the program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review research trends and show the developmental direction of studies on dementia and nursing interventions for demented elders. Methods: This study analyzed 104 articles on dementia and 23 on nursing interventions for demented elders published until 2007. Results: These dementia studies increased in quantity after 1996, mainly in studies on demented elders and their families and in quantitative studies, Nursing intervention methods were music, light, horticultural therapy, reminiscence and complex therapeutic program, etc. There were experimental studies after 1996, but non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was 8(34.8%) of 23(100,0%). The medium sample size was 16.6 for experimental groups, 13 for control groups. The experimental time range was 10-120 minutes a day, frequency was 1-18 a week, and the total frequency was 4-72. The result variables were cognitive function, dementia behavior, emotion, depression, ADL, social behavior, etc. Conclusion: The findings of this review suggest that studies on dementia have been improved in quantity since 1996, but various and effective research methods should be developed as a way to further improve the quality of studies.
Propose: This study was to identify the factors affecting the oral health status in vulnerable elders receiving home visiting health care service. Methods: A total of 444 elderly people over the age of 65 at 33 public health centers in Daegu and Gyungbuk areas were included in this survey. The data were collected by personal interview with nurses using oral health knowledge, behavior, and status questionnaires from the $10^{th}$ to $22^{nd}$ of July, 2012. The data were analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, and stepwise multiple regression, using SPSS program. Results: Factors affecting the oral health status were chewing satisfaction with denture 14.5% (${\beta}=.391$, p<.001), denture care (wash with water) 3.2% (${\beta}=-.187$, p<.01), and types of health insurance (medical aid type1, 2) 1% (${\beta}=-.111$, p<.05). The factors explained 18.7% of variance in the oral health status of vulnerable elderly subjects. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in order to improve the oral health status of vulnerable elders, it is necessary to provide oral health education that includes the proper usage of denture to elders who receive home-visiting care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify leisure activities, health promotion behaviors, and quality of life and regional differences in urban and rural elderly people. Method: This study was a descriptive research and data were collected from 198 elderly people using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the PASW WIN 18.0 Program. Result: Urban elders showed significantly higher rate for leisure activities compared to rural elders. While urban elders did not show a significant relationship among leisure activities, health promotion behaviors, and quality of life, rural elders showed a significant relationship among leisure activities, health promotion behavior, and quality of life. While the leisure activities and health promotion behaviors were influenced by recreational and social life in the urban elders, these activities and behaviors had no influence for rural elders. Leisure activities and quality of life were influenced by watching and enjoying activities, services and religious activities, and recreational and social life for urban elders but health sports was an influence for rural elders. Conclusion: Findings indicate regional differences and provide basic information to develop programs and leisure guidelines to enhance leisure activities, health promotion behaviors, and quality of life according to regional characteristics of elderly people.
Purpose: Recently there are scientific evidences for the health effects of Asian dust-storms. Particularly in 2002, the daily average of $PM_10$ exceeded 600 and 700 $\mu{g}/m^3$ in March and April respectively. We examined the effects of Asian dust‐storms on perceived symptoms and preventive behaviors among children, adults, and elders. Method: The subjects of this study were 425 children, 444 adults and 60 elders. A questionnaire survey was carried out on the children and the adults by teachers and on the elders by interviewers to obtain information on demographic variables, perceived symptoms and preventive behaviors, previous respiratory disease, environmental tobacco smoke, and proximity between the house and the road during Asian dust-storms. We analyzed using descriptive statistics, $X^2$ test and multiple logistic regression models. After adjustment for potential confounders, we estimated the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the children and the elders for perceived symptoms and preventive behaviors. Result: The elders had a significantly higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms than the other groups. The children had a significantly higher prevalence than the adults in getting URI (1.51), coughing (1.68), rhinorrhea (1.46), fever (2.39) and medication for allergy or asthma (1.90). The children had better behaviors than the elders in closing windows (3.57), taking less outdoor recreational activity (2.59) and staying home (2.60). Conclusion: This study suggested that children and elders are susceptible to the effects of Asian dust on health. Health educators should inform these populations about the influence of Asian dust and provide health education for preventive behaviors.
Purpose: This study investigated various factors relatied to wandering behavior of Korean elders with dementia (KED). Methods: A sample of 160 ambulatory residents with dementia from 14 long term care facilities was used to examine demographic, individual, cognitive, physical health, and environmental characteristics by comparing wanderers (N=108) to nonwanders (N=52). Subjects were evaluated by Korean versions of the Mini-mental State Exam (K-MMSE), the Physical and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (K-PIADL), and the Revised Algase Wandering Scale Nursing Home version (KRAWS-NH) along its six dimensions. Demographic and environmental data were also obtained. Independent sample t-tests, Chi-square test, Fisher's Exact tests, and ANCOVAs were used to examine differences between wanderers and nonwanders. Results: Wanderers were significantly (p<.05) older and had more limitations in K-PADL and K-IADL. The degree of overall wandering and certain features of wandering were significantly different (p<.05) by total number of residents in the facility, type of bedroom (i.e., "Ondol"), and color of bedroom and living-room walls (i.e., sky blue). Conclusions: Findings of this study may be useful in understanding wandering behavior of KEDs and thus developing more culturally specific management strategies.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to identify the effect of a community based health promotion program for elders in Korea. Methods: The PICO-SD (Participants, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Study Design) strategy was established. A search of the electronic bibliographic database of NDSL, RISS, KMbase, and KoreaMed etc. was performed and 28 articles met inclusion criteria. Results: Both exercise and health education were in most programs and were more effective than one of the two. The health education included stress management, mental health, health promotion lifestyle, chronic disease, and medication. Various exercises such as walking, stretching, gymnastics, rhythmic activity, muscle strength, and joint exercise were performed. The programs for elders showed an association with significantly improved muscular strength, flexibility, depression, quality of life, subjective health status, satisfaction with life, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior. Conclusion: Intervention programs including both exercise and health education are effective in improving health promotion behavior and physical and psychological health status in elders. Therefore, these results could provide useful guidelines for development of effective health intervention programs for the elderly.
With the overall revision of the Welfare of the Aged Act in 1997, elderly welfare facilities have developed differently according to the size of locality, capacity, and social and economic characteristics. In response to the problem, various plans are being executed for expanding services and facilities for the aged. However, such efforts by the government have been focused on quantitative increase rather than on qualitative improvement, and there are not many high-quality elderly welfare facilities that meet the needs of the consumers, namely, the aged. In contrast, elderly welfare centers in Japan began to be founded from the 1960s and increased significantly from the 1970s and, as a result, 2,214 elderly welfare centers were in operation in 1995, maintaining a high level in quantity as well as in quality. Therefore, the present study surveyed using a checklist how elderly welfare centers in Japan, which are playing central roles in welfare facility services for the aged in Japan, design their indoor spaces reflecting elders' behavior and characteristics and, based on the results of the survey, classified spaces into shared spaces and individual service spaces and analyzed the spaces of each center using the checklist. The results from this case study will be used as basic data to establish standards for the space composition of elderly welfare facilities in Korea, which has 10 years' short history of elderly welfare facilities.
