Strength and strain enhancements of concrete columns confined with FRP sheets

  • The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. The effect of local reinforcements constitute by single strips applied at corners before the continuous wrapping and the effect of round corners are also considered. Analytical results are compared to experimental values available in the literature.

Failure Criterion of Straight Pipe with Outer Local Wall Thinning under Internal Pressure (내압을 받는 외부 국부 감육 직관의 파손 기준)

  • This study was carried out an experimental and finite element analysis on the fracture behavior of straight pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area has an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.92 and an eroded length of l=25, 50 and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate failure behaviors. In regards to the relation ship between pressure and eroded ratio, the criterion that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from this calculation. The results of this calculation were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.

  • Wrinkling is one of the major defects in sheet metal products and may be also attributable to the wear of the tool. The initiation and growth of the wrinkles are influenced by many factors such as stress state, mechanical properites of the sheet material, geometry of the body, and contact condition. It is difficult to analyze the wrinkling initiation and growth considering the factors because the effects of the factors are very complex and the wrinkling behavior may show wide variation for small deviation of the factors. In this study, the bifurcation theory is introduced for the finite element analysis of wrinkling initiation and growth, All the above mentioned factors are conveniently considered by finite element method. The finite element formulation is based on the incremental deformation theory and elastic-plastic material modeling. The finite element analysis is carried out using the continuum-based resultant shell elements considering the planar anisotropy of the sheet metal. The proposed method is verified by employing to column buckling problem. And then, the initiation and growth of wrinkling in deep drawing of cylindrical cup are analyzed.

A Review of Corrosion and Hydrogen Diffusion Behaviors of High Strength Pipe Steel in Sour Environment

  • A brief overview is given of the corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behaviors of high strength pipe steel in sour environment. Firstly, hydrogen adsorption and diffusion mechanism of the pipe steel is introduced. Secondly, the effect of iron sulfide film precipitated as a result of the corrosion reaction on the steel surface on hydrogen reduction reaction and subsequent hydrogen permeation through the steel is discussed. Moreover, the hydrogen diffusion behavior of the pipe steel under tensile stress in both elastic and plastic ranges is reviewed based on a number of experimental permeation data and theoretical models describing the hydrogen diffusion and trapping phenomena in the steel. It is hoped that this paper will result in significant academic contributions in the field of corrosion and hydrogen related problems of the pipe steel used in sour environment.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of elastic and inelasitc behavior of ductile moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame subhected to reversed lateral loading such as eqrthquake excitations. For this purpose, a 2-bay 2-story R.C. plane frame with seismic detail was designed and one 1/2.5-scale subassemblage was manufactured according to the required similitude law. Then the reversed load test under the displacement control was performed statically to this subassemblage. Finally the results of this test were analysed regarding to (1) the design load vs actual strength, (2) degradation in stiffness and strength, (3) failure mode or main plastic mechanism in energy dissipation, (4) local deformations.

  • The fatigue crack initiation life is studied on automotive spot weldment made from cold rolled carbon steel(SPC) sheet by using DCPDM and local strain approach. It can be found that the fatigue crack initiation behavior in spot weldment can be definitely detected by DCPDM system. The local stresses and strains are estimated by elastic-plastic FEM analysis and the alternative approximate method based on Neuber's rule were applied to predict the fatigue life of spot weldment. A satisfactory correlation between the predicted life and experimental life can be found in spot weldment within a factor of 4.

  • In this paper, we conducted finite element analysis to investigate the residual stress redistributions of weldment due to cutting. To evaluate the effect of the residual stress on the fatigue behavior of weldment, test specimens are commonly cut from the weldment, but the distributions of the residual stress in the cut specimen should be different from those in the original weldment. Our work is to evaluate the difference between the residual stresses before and after weldment-cutting to understand the effect of cutting on the residual stress. Transient heat analysis, elastic-plastic mechanical analysis and element removal technique are used to simulate the welding and cutting procedures on the commercial finite element code ABAQUS.

Estimation of Preceding Displacement at Tunnel Excavation by NATM (NATM 시공에 의한 터널 굴착시 선행변위 추정에 관한 연구)

  • Field instrumentation and numerical analysis by the finite difference method were applied to estimate the relaxed zone in a subway tunnel of shallow depth in soft rock, excavated by NATM. The convergence and ground displacement can be used to estimate the deformation behavior and the relaxed zone. Parameters for the several models previously suggested were measured using regression analysis techniques adopting a function of time and the face advance. The estimated relaxed zone by the MPBX and FDM analysis were 1.5~3.0 m and 1.5~2.0 m, respectively. It was concluded that the visco-elastic model and the time-dependent elasto-plastic model correlate very well ($r^2$>0.9) with results of the numerical analyses.

  • A series of parametric study was performed for the investigation on the influence of analysis parameters to the solution behavior in the elastic-plastic-static analysis of several sheet metal forming processes, such as deflection by a point force under plane strain and axisymmetric conditions, plane strain bending by a punch, axisymmetric stretching by a punch, axisymmetric bulging by hydraulic pressure, and axisymmetric deep drawing by a punch. The parameters considered are kind of element, number of elements, integration scheme for elemental equation and friction coefficient. Results obtained for different selections of those parameters were compared with each other, experimental measurements and analytical solution.
