Deflections and rotations in rectangular beams with straight haunches under uniformly distributed load considering the shear deformations

  • This paper presents a model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams with straight haunches under uniformly distributed load and moments in the ends considering the bending and shear deformations (Timoshenko Theory) to obtain the deflections and rotations on the beam, which is the main part of this research. The traditional model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams under uniformly distributed load considers only the bending deformations (Euler-Bernoulli Theory). Also, a comparison is made between the proposed and traditional model of simply supported beams with respect to the rotations in two supports and the maximum deflection of the beam. Also, another comparison is made for beams fixed at both ends with respect to the moments and reactions in the support A, and the maximum deflection of the beam. Results show that the proposed model is greater for simply supported beams in the maximum deflection and the traditional model is greater for beams fixed at both ends in the maximum deflection. Then, the proposed model is more appropriate and safe with respect the traditional model for structural analysis, because the shear forces and bending moments are present in any type of structure and the bending and shear deformations appear.

Effects of Taping on Balance and Gait in Patients With Stroke: A Meta-analysis

  • Background: Stroke is one of the causes affecting gait and balance. Taping is considered an effective method for improving balance and gait in stroke patients. Numerous studies have confirmed the functional effects of taping in stroke patients. However, there is still no consensus regarding the use of taping to improve gait and balance. Objects: The purpose of this review was to investigate the effects of taping on the balance and gait of patients with stroke through meta-analysis of studies. Methods: PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Review, RISS, DBPia, and Science on were used to collect articles on Kinesio and non-elastic taping. The key terms were "Stroke", "Hemiplegia", "Taping", "Tape", "Balance", and "Gait" with cut-off of October, 2022. Taping group was compared with control groups with sham, placebo, and no taping. The outcome measures included the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and gait speed (cm/s). Eighteen studies (524 patients) were selected for the meta-analysis. Results: Overall, taping improved balance and gait in stroke patients, and Kinesio and non-elastic taping had similar effect sizes. Taping improved the BBS and TUG, and was most effective on gait speed. Contrary to the expectation that a longer duration of taping would be more affective, taping was most effective when the total taping duration was shorter than 500 minutes. In addition, the effect size of taping was greater when it was simultaneously attached to multiple locations. Conclusion: This meta-analysis supports the use of taping to improve gait and balance in stroke patients, and provides guidelines for the location, duration, and type of tape to increase taping efficiency.

Free Vibrations of Circular Uniform Strips Resting on Two Parameter Elastic Foundation (두 변수 탄성지반으로 지지된 원호형 등단면 띠기초의 자유진동)

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of circular strip foundations which have uniform solid rectangular cross-section. The ground which supports circular strips was modeled as the two parameter elastic foundation. Differential equations governing the flexural-torsional free vibrations of circular strips supported by such foundation were derived, and solved numerically for obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Boundary condition of free-free ends was considered for numerical examples. Four lowest natural frequencies according to the variations of five system parameters i.e. subtended angle, depth ratio, contact ratio, elasticity ratio and soil parameter are reported in the non-dimensional forms. Also, typical mode shapes of both deformations and stress resultants are presented in the figures. Experiment was conducted for validating the theory developed in this study.

A Study on Settlement according to Height and Ground stiffness on the MSEW on the IPM Bridge (토압분리형 교량의 보강토옹벽의 높이와 기초지반 강성에 따른 침하량 검토)

  • The mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSEW) of the IPM bridge is an important structure that constitutes the bridge, and supports the horizontal earth pressure and approach slab. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully analyze the settlement of MSEW of the IPM bridge. This study examined the settlement according to the height and ground stiffness on the MSEW on the IPM Bridge. According to the design guideline, the IPM Bridge (2016) was designed to have a height of 4.0 ~ 10.0m and the elastic settlement was calculated. The base area and the grounding pressure of the MSE wall increased linearly with the height, and the elastic settlement also increased linearly. In addition, the stiffness of the foundations satisfying the allowable settlement of the approach slab is a N value of 35 or more. The settlement of finite element analysis was estimated to be smaller than the elastic settlement, and the stiffness of the foundation ground satisfied the allowable settlement of the approach slab above N value of 20. Because the elastic settlement of the MSEW of the IPM Bridge was overestimated, it will be necessary to examine it carefully by finite element analysis.

The Analysis of Tunnel Excavation using Finite Difference Method (유한 차분법을 이용한 터널 단면 해석)

  • Using FLAC, which is an explicit finite difference code written for analysis of problems in geotechnical engineering, a particular example 2 in the Korean Geothechnical Society News has been analysed. The elastoplasticity formulation in FLAC assumes an elastic, perfectly plastic solid in plane strain which conforms to a Mohr-Coulomb yield condition. During tunnel excavations by stages, stresses and diaplacements in region around the tunnel varies according to distance from the face of tunnel and installation of tunnel supports, and soon. In this analysis, the three dimensional support effect of the rock mass during the process of excavation is simulated by using the stress distribution method, and varying the material constants of shotcrete in each stage also considered. The maximum convergency is occured at the crown of the tunnel and estimated to be about 12mm.

On the Description of Constrained Static Behavior of Continuous System

  • The static behavior of continuous system is described by the elastic curve method or is approximately analyzed by a finite element method to be modeled as a discrete system. If a continuous system is constrained by linear constraints which restrict its static behavior, its behavior can be approximately described by the finite element method. It is not easy to describe the constrained behavior by continuous coordinate system. Starting from the generalized inverse method provided by Eun, Lee and Chung, this study is to expand the equation to the continuous systems, to perform the structural analysis of the beam under a uniform loading with interior spring supports, and to investigate the validity of the proposed method through applications.

  • This paper proposes a novel framework for virtual content delivery networks (CDNs) based on cloud computing. The proposed framework aims to provide multimedia content delivery services customized for content providers by sharing virtual machines (VMs) in the Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud, while fulfilling the service level agreement. Furthermore, it supports elastic virtual CDN services, which enables the capabilities of VMs to be scaled to encompass the dynamically changing resource demand of the aggregated virtual CDN services. For this, we provide the system architecture and relevant operations for the virtual CDNs and evaluate the performance based on a simulation.

A Couple Vibration Analysis of Railway Track System with Consideration of Contact Stiffness (접촉 강성을 고려헌 차량-레일계의 연성 진동 해석)

  • Corrugation of railway track can be caused by the various dynamic behaviors of traveling wheels and track. In this paper, the coupled vibrations of traveling wheel and railway track are analyzed as the cause of corrugations. To analyze the coupled vibration, the track supported by the sleepers and the traveling wheels are identified to the elastically supported infinite beam and the spring-mass system which runs at constant speed. The Hertzian contact spring is considered between the infinite beam and spring-mass system are calculated. The cause and development of rail corrugation are discussed in the view point of contact force fluctuation affected by the elastic supports and the corrugated surface profile on the track. By the obtained results, the possibilities of resonance are checked between the excitation by the corrugated surface profile and the natural frequency of contact spring-mass system. It may be thought to a development of railway corrugation.

  • Railroad track consists of relatively simple structures such as rail, sleeper, ballast. Roadbed shares vertical pressure by train load which passed through rail to ballast as base that supports the track. For evaluating stress and displacement of roadbed due to the railroad load is an important role on the track as a basic data for estimation of the durability and design of the roadbed thickness. GEOTRACK program applied multi-layered theory was developed for analyzing railroad track structure. GEOTRACK program is a sort of numerical analysis program which has advantage that can analysis component of track by simple method. In this study, this program was used to preform the numerical analysis by changing track conditions and roadbed conditions such as tie, reinforced roadbed, dynamic wheel load, Resilient modulus and so on. Dynamics of Track/Wheel Systems on High-Speed Vehicles

  • For high speed railway vehicles, we consider a vibration of flexible track/wheel system. It is very important to deal with the complex phenomena of high-speed vehicles that can be occurred in the vertical vibration of the system. From a viewpoint of multibody dynamics, this kind of problem needs accurate analysis because the system includes mutual dynamic behaviors of rigid body and flexible body. The simulation technique for the complex problems is also discussed. We consider the high-speed translation, rail elasticity, elastic supports under the rail and contact rigidity. Eigen value analysis is also completed to verify the mechanism of the coupled vertical vibration of the system.
