Many industrialized countries of the world have many problems about the reuse of waste landfill area because the increase of terminated waste disposal landfill. Especially, the effective use of the terminated waste disposal landfill nearby the urban area has been demanded, because of the lack of the usable land. However, the reuse of terminated waste disposal landfill site is needed an adequate stabilization of ground for increasing the bearing capacity and reduce the allowable settlement for the given structure. This study is to evaluate the applicability of geosynthetics for the increment of bearing capacity of solid waste landfill ground. The in-situ cyclic plate loading tests were performed to determine the dynamic and static behaviors of reinforced ground with geosynthetics. Four series of test were conducted with variations of geosynthetics, number of geogrid layer. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the bearing capacity ratio, subgrade modulus of ground, and the elastic rebound ratio were determined.

Expansive soils are renowned for their swelling-shrinkage property and these volumetric changes resultantly cause huge damage to civil infrastructures. Likewise, subgrades consisting of expansive soils instigate serviceability failures in pavements across various regions of Pakistan and worldwide. This study presents the use of polypropylene fibers to improve the engineering properties of a local swelling soil. The moisture-density relationship, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus (E50), California bearing ratio (CBR) and one-dimensional consolidation behavior of the soil treated with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8% fibers have been investigated in this study. It is found that the maximum dry density of reinforced soil slightly decreased by 2.8% due to replacement of heavier soil particles by light-weight fibers and the optimum moisture content remained almost unaffected due to non-absorbent nature of the fibers. A significant improvement has been observed in UCS (an increase of 279%), E50 (an increase of 113.6%) and CBR value (an increase of 94.4% under unsoaked and an increase of 55.6% under soaked conditions) of the soil reinforced with 0.4% fibers, thereby providing a better quality subgrade for the construction of pavements on such soils. Free swell and swell pressure of the soil also significantly reduced (94.4% and 87.9%, respectively) with the addition of 0.8% fibers and eventually converting the medium swelling soil to a low swelling class. Similarly, the compression and rebound indices also reduced by 69.9% and 88%, respectively with fiber inclusion of 0.8%. From the experimental evaluations, it emerges that polypropylene fiber has great potential as a low cost and sustainable stabilizing material for widespread swelling soils.

Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. To apply SHCC to structural member, SHCC must have economical efficiency and workability as well as own excellent tensile performance. For these purposes, four-point bending and direct tensile tests on SHCC with only hybrid synthetic fibers, total fiber volume fraction, $V_f$, is 1.5%, are carried out. The research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene (PE) fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Also, effect of hybrid type and water-cement ratio on the behavior of SHCC was evaluated in this paper.

Silica fume is a very important gradient in UHPC(Ultra High Performance Concrete) and its amount is normally over 25% of cement(wt.%). But we surely need to comprehend the influence of the amount of silica fume on the UHPC. In this paper, it was investigated how the amount of silica fume influence on the properties such as fluidity, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and flexural strength. Furthermore, it was examined the internal micro structure on UHPC through the test of SEM and MIP. In results, If we properly use silica fume in UHPC, fluidity and strength of UHPC was increased. It can be ascertained through the test of MIP that silica fume effectively increased density of UHPC by posolanic reaction and acting as filler. Especially, In case of Cement to silica fume ratio$0.1{\sim}0.25%$, we can be concluded that UHPC has similar to mechanical property.

This study measured the shearing resistance of the roots of the Pinus Koraiensis by the tensile strength gained through their individual tensile test for the Root Reinforcement Model. On the basis of the shearing resistance value calculated through such a process the factor of safety(Fs) was comparatively presented by using the simplified Janbu Method in PCSTABL5M, the slop-analyzing software which had been developed in Purdue University of the U.S.A according to the shape of a slope and the type of soil. The results to have measured a stress and the factor of safety(Fs) by experiment are as follows. 1) The mean root diameter of the Pinus Koraiensis used for this experiment was 2.483mm and the mean tensile stress was calculated as 422.846(kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). In the strain ratio of material and the elastic modulus was measured 7.8%, 9,291.92(kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). 2) The shearing strength including the resistance of soil and root is expressed as Rt=C+Cr+$\sigma$.tan . ΔCr(kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) of the shearing resistance calculated by estimating the areal ratio of roots at 10 is 0.253(kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). 3) As the result of making an analysis of the natural slope stability by the soil parameter, the factor of safety(Fs) was calculated at 1.795 in CL, and the stability analysis of the root reinforcement slope, Fs was calculated at 1.952. However, since a precise analysis of the controlled factors of the slope analyses are demanded for more accurate dynamic analyses, the future demands a study on this.

Recently a lot of researches have been conducted on the progressive collapse of structures which is the total collapse of structures initiated by localized damage. Most of the previous studies on the field of progressive collapse have followed deterministic approach without considering uncertainty involved in design variables, which results in unknown reliability of the analysis results. In this study the sensitivity analyses are carried out with design variables such as yield strength, live load, damping ratio, and elastic modulus on the vertical deflection of the joint from which a column is suddenly removed. The Monte Calro simulation, tornado diagram method, and the first order second moment method(FOSM) are applied for the sensitivity study. According to the nonlinear static analysis results, the vertical deflection is most affected by the variation of yield strength of beams. The nonlinear dynamic analyses show that the behaviour of model structures is highly sensitive to variation of the yield strength of beams and the structural damping ratio.

Statement of problem. In dentistry, the minimally prepared inlay resin-bonded fixed partial denture (FPD) made of new ceromer / fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) was recently introduced. However, the appropriate dimensions for the long-term success and subsequent failure strength are still unknown. Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the most fracture-resistible thickness combination of the ceromer / FRC using a universal testing machine and an AE analyzer. Material and Methods. A metal jig considering the dimensions of premolars and molars was milled and 56-epoxy resin dies, which had a similar elastic modulus to that of dentin, were duplicated. According to manufacturer's instructions, the FRC beams with various thicknesses (2 to 4 mm) were constructed and veneered with the 1 or 2 mm-thick ceromers. The fabricated FPDs were luted with resin cement on the resin dies and stored at room temperature for 72 hours. AE (acoustic emission) sensors were attached to both ends, the specimens were subjected to a compressive load until fracture at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The AE and failure loads were recorded and analyzed statistically. Results. The results showed that the failure strength of the ceromer/FRC inlay FPDs was affected by the total thickness of the connectors rather than the ceromer to FRC ratio or the depth of the pulpal wall. Fracture was initiated from the interface and propagated into the ceromer layer regardless of the change in the ceromer / FRC ratio. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, the failure loads showed significant differences only in the case of different connector thicknesses, and no significant differences were found between the same connector thickness groups. The application of AE analysis method in a fiber-reinforced inlay FPD can be used to evaluate the fracture behavior and to analyze the precise fracture point.

Various failure modes occur in the concrete beams reinforced with GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) under initial condition and repairing patterns. In this study, the failure behaviors of concrete beams restrengthened with GFRP sheet with slightly higher elastic modulus than concrete were investigated. For the tests, concrete beams with 24 MPa were manufactured, and the effects of initial notch, overlapping, end-strip reinforcement, and fiber anchors were analyzed on failure load. The cases of GFRP overlap around notch and the initial notch showed increasing failure loads similar to those of normal restrengthened case since the epoxy of the saturated GFRP sufficiently repaired the notch area. Compared to the control case without restrengthening of GFRP, the concrete with initial notch showed 0.78 of loading ratio and normal restrengthening showed 4.43~5.61 times of increasing ratio of failure loading, where interface-debonding from flexural crack were mainly observed. The most ideal failure behavior, break of GFRP, was observed when end-strip over 1/3 height from bottom and fiber anchor were installed, which showed increasing failure load over 150 % to normal restrengthening.

Polymer composite are increasingly considered as structural components for use in civil engineering, on account of their enhanced strength-to-weight ratios. Unsaturated polyester (UP) resin have been widely used for the matrix of composites such as FRP and polymer composite, due to its excellent adhesive. Polymer nanocomposites are new class of composites derived from the nano scale inorganic particles with dimensions typically in the range of 1 to 1000 nm that are dispersed in the polymer matrix homogeneously. Owing to the high aspect ratio of the fillers, mechanical, thermal, flame, retardant and barrier properties are enhanced without significant loss of clarity, toughness or impact strength. To prepare the MMT (Montmorillonite)-UP exfoliated nanocomposites, UP was mixed with MMT at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours by using pan mixer. XRD (X-ray diffraction) pattern of the composites and TEM (Transmission Electron Micrographs) showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified MMT were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified MMT were higher than those of the composites with unmodified MMT. The thermal stability of MMT-UP nanocomposite is better than that of pure UP, and its glass transition temperature is higher than that of pure UP. The polymer concrete made with MMT-UP nanocomposite has better mechanical properties than of pure UP. Therefore, it is suggested that strength and elastic modulus of polymer concrete was found to be positively tensile strength and tensile modulus of the MMT-UP nanocomposites.

The best way of investigating the physical and mechanical properties of subsurface materials is the combined interpretation of data from borehole geophysical surveys and geotechnical experiments with rock samples. In this study two surface seismic surveys with refraction and surface-wave method are alternatively conducted for downhole seismic surveys in test site for geological field trip in Jeungpyung, Chungbuk. P- and S-wave velocity structures are delineated by refraction and MASW (multichannel analysis of shear waves) methods, respectively. Possion's ratio section, reconstructed from P- and S-wave velocities, is correlated to the outcrop geological features consisting of reddish sedimentary rock, gray volcanic rock, and joints/fractures. In addition, rock samples representative for reddish sedimentary and gray volcanic features are geotechnically analyzed to provide physical, mechanical properties, and elastic modulus. Dynamic elastic moduli estimated from geophysical data is found to be higher than the one from geotechnical data. Reddish sedimentary rock characterized with low porosity and moisture content corresponds to the zone of low electrical resistivities and their small variations in the resistivity sections between the rainy and dry days. This trend suggests that the weathered gray volcanic rock and the nearby fractures with higher low porosity and moisture content are interpreted to be good carrier especially in rainy season.
