The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on the elastic properties of a polymer-based nanocomposite was experimentally investigated and the obtained results were compared with various existing theoretical models. The nanocomposite was consisted of high density polyethylene (HDPE) as polymeric matrix and 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt.% multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prepared using twin screw extruder and injection molding technique. Nanocomposite samples were molded in injection apparatus according to ASTM-D638 standard. Therefore, in addition to morphological investigations of the samples, tensile tests at ambient temperature were performed on each sample and stress-strain plots, elastic moduli, Poisson's ratios, and strain energies of volume units were extracted from primary strain test results. Tensile test results demonstrated that 1 wt.% nanoparticles presented the best reinforcement behavior in HDPE-MWCNT nanocomposites. Due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles at above 1 wt.%, Young's modulus, yielding stress, fracture stress, and fracture energy were decreased and Poisson's ratio and failure strain were increased.

Contrary to an intact rock, the jointed rock mass shows strain-dependent deformation characteristics (elastic modulus and damping ratio). The maximum elastic modulus of a rock mass can be obtained from an elastic wave-based exploration in a small strain level and applied to seismic analyses. However, the assessment and application of the non-linear characteristics of rock masses in a small to medium strain level ($10^{-4}{\sim}0.5%$) have not been carried out yet. A non-linear dynamic analysis module is newly developed for FLAC3D to simulate strain-dependent shear modulus degradation and damping ratio amplification characteristics. The developed module is verified by analyzing the change of the Ricker wave propagation. Strain-dependent non-linear characteristics are obtained from disks of cored samples using a rock mass dynamic testing apparatus which can evaluate wave propagation characteristics in a jointed rock column. Using the experimental results and the developed non-linear dynamic module, seismic analyses are performed for the intersection of a shaft and an inclined tunnel. The numerical results show that vertical and horizontal displacements of non-linear analyses are larger than those of linear analyses. Also, non-linear analyses induce bigger bending compressive stresses acting on the lining. The bending compressive stress concentrates at the intersection part. The fundamental understanding of a strain-dependent jointed rock mass behavior is achieved in this study and the analytical procedure suggested can be effectively applied to field designs and analyses.

Nondestructive test (NDT) provides much information on concrete without damage of structural functions. Of NDT methods, elastic wave propagation methods, such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and impact-echo (IE) method, have been successfully used to estimate the strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio of concrete as well as to detect the internal microstructural change and defects. In this study, the concretes with water-binder ratio ranging from 0.27 to 0.50 and fly ash content of 20% were made and then their longitudinal wave velocities were measured by UPV and IE method, respectively. Test results showed that the UPV is greater than the longitudinal wave velocity measured by the If method, i.e., rod-wave velocity obtained from the same concrete cylinder. It was found that the difference between the two types of velocities decreased with increasing the ages of concrete and strength level. Moreover, for the empirical formula, the dynamic Poisson's ratio, static and dynamic moduli of elasticity, and velocity-strength relationship were determined. It was observed that the Poisson's ratio and the modulus of elasticity determined by the dynamic method are greater than those determined by the static test. Consequently, for the more accurate estimation of concrete properties using the elastic wave velocities, the characteristics of these velocities should be understood.

In this study, we observed the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and low temperature sealing performance of fluorosilicone elastic composites. When the blend ratio of Phenyl vinyl methyl silicone (PVMQ) was increased, the tensile strength, modulus at 100%, and compression set were decreased. The thermal stability of fluorosilicone elastic composites showed a similar tendency. These were caused by poorer green strength of PVMQ than Fluorosilicone rubber (FVMQ). The change in the tensile strength and elongation at -40℃ showed a decreasing tendency with increasing PVMQ blend ratio. By increasing the PVMQ blend ratio, low-temperature performance was improved. The Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed that Tg was decreased and low-temperature performance was improved with increasing PVMQ blend ratio. However tanδ was decreased becaused of the poor green strength and elasticity of PVMQ. From a hysteresis loss at -40℃, the hysteresis loss value was increased and fluorosilicone elastic composites showed the decreasing tendency of elasticity with increasing PVMQ blend ratio. From the TR test, TR10 was decreased with increasing PVMQ blend ratio. FS-4 (45% PVMQ blended composites) showed a TR10 of -68.0℃ that was 5℃ lower than that of FS-1 (100% FVMQ). The gas leakage temperature was decreased with increasing PVMQ blend ratio. The gas leakage temperature of FS-4 was -69.2℃ that was 5℃ lower than that of FS-1. Caused by the polymer chain started to transfer from a glassy state to a rubbery state and had a mobility of chain under Tg, the gas leakage temperature showed a lower value than Tg. The sealing performance at low temperature was dominated by Tg that directly affected the mobility of the polymer chain.

This study wag performed to evaluate the engineering properties of permeable polymer concrete with stone dust and fly ash and unsaturated polyester resin. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. The highest strength was achieved by stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete, it was increased 17% by compressive strength, 188% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 2. The water permeability was in the range of 3.O76~4.152${\ell}/ cm{^2}/h$, and it was largely dependent upon the mix design. These concrete can be used to the structures which need water permeability. 3. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.15{\times} 10^5kg/cm^2$, which was approximately 53 56% of that of the normal cement concrete. 4. The poisson's number of permeable polymer concrete was in the range of 5.106~5.833, which was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 5. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.29{\times} 10^5~1.5{\times} 10^5 kg/cm^2$, which was approximately less compared to that of the normal cement concrete. Stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete was showed higher dynamic modulus. The dynamic modulus of elasticity were increased approximately 7~13% than that of the static modulus. 6. The compressive strength, bending strength, elastic modulus, poisson's ratio, longitudinal strain and horizontal strain were decreased with the increase of poisson's number and water permeability at those concrete.
An analytical solution based on the neutral surface concept is developed to study the free vibration behavior of simply supported functionally graded plate reposed on the elastic foundation by taking into account the effect of transverse shear deformations. No transversal shear correction factors are needed because a correct representation of the transversal shearing strain obtained by using a new refined shear deformation theory. The foundation is described by the Winkler-Pasternak model. The Young's modulus of the plate is assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law formulation, and the Poisson ratio is held constant. The equation of motion for FG rectangular plates resting on elastic foundation is obtained through Hamilton's principle. Numerical examples are provided to show the effect of foundation stiffness parameters presented for thick to thin plates and for various values of the gradient index, aspect and side to thickness ratio. It was found that the proposed theory predicts the fundamental frequencies very well with the ones available in literature.

In this paper, when stress waves are propagated along the reinforced direction of the composite, the characteristic equation of Rayleigh wave is derived. The relationships between velocities of stress waves and Rayleigh wave are studied for anisotropic ratios(E(sub)11/E(sub)12 or E(sub)22/E(sub)11). The increments of anisotropic ratios is made by using known material properties and being constant of basic properties. When the anisotropic ratios are increased, Rayleigh wave velocities to the shear wave velocities are almost equal to 1 with any anisotropic ratios. Rayleigh wave velocities to the longitudinal wave velocities and Shear wave velocities ratio to the longitudinal wave velocities are almost identical each other, they are between 0.12 and 0.21. When the anisotropic ration is very high, that is, E(sub)11/E(sub)22=46.88, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are almost constant with Poissons ratio, longitudinal wave velocities are very slowly increased with the increments of Poissons ratios. When E(sub)11(elastic modulus of the reinforced direction)and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are steeply decreased with the increments of anisotropic ratios and the velocities of longitudinal wave are almost constant with them. When E(sub)22(elastic modulus of the normal direction to the fiber) and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayeigh wave velocities is slowly increased with the increments of anisotropic ratios, the shear wave velocities are almost constant with them, the longitudinal wave velocities are steeply increased with them.

Structural capacity of water channel fabricated of concrete including blast furnace slag were investigated in this paper. An experimental study was consisted of materials test and structural test of concrete water channel. The mechanical properties of concrete including blast furnace slag were investigated. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was used as basic binder and the effect of the replacement of blast furnace slag for OPC was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength, elastic modulus and modulus of rupture. Test results show that the compressive strengths and modulus of ruptures of mixtures containing blast furnace slag were equivalent to those of OPC concrete. In addition, the structural capacity of concrete water channel with up to the replacement ratio of blast furnace slag of 45% was greater than the required strength in KS specification.
In this paper a semi-analytical approach is proposed to study the lateral behavior of a piled footing under horizontal loading. As accurate computation of stresses is usually needed at the interface separating the footing (pile) and the soil, this important location should be appropriately modeled as zero-thickness joint element. The piled footing is embedded in elastic soil with either homogeneous modulus or modulus proportional to depth (Gibson's soil). As the pile is the principal element in the piled footing system, a limited parametric study is carried out in order to investigate the influence of footing dimensions and the interface conditions on the lateral behavior of the pile. Hence, the pile behavior is examined through its main governing parameters, namely, the lateral displacement profiles, the bending moments, the shear forces and the soil reactions. The numerical results are presented for Poisson's ratio of 0.2 to represent a large variety of sands and Poisson's ratio of 0.5 to represent undrained clays.

The structures have intrinsic uncertainties in analysis/design parameters contrary to the assumptions of perfect constant over the structural domain. The material and geometrical parameters are the exemplary ones. The influences of uncertainties in Young's modulus, which are the representative random design variables, on the structural response have been the center of focus in the realm of stochastic analysis. In this study, a formulation to obtain the response variability due to the randomness in the Poisson's ratio is given. In that the previous researches in the literature deal with the response variability due mainly to the uncertainty in the elastic modulus, with the results of this research, it can be asserted to obtain the response variability taking into consideration of uncertainties in all the material constants becomes possible.
