  • In spite of a large amount of previous research, detail study on modified mass in proportional damping system is not well understood. It is common to predict structural dynamic design parameters due to the change of mass, but to predict the amount of modified mass and the location where the mass is being modified are rarely found in previous literature. Such inverse problem required detail analytical study in order to understand structural modification in proportional damping system. This paper predicts the modified mass and the modified mass location in proportional damping system using sensitivity coefficients and iterative method. The sensitivity coefficients are obtained from the change of eigenvectors due to mass modification. This method is applied to a horizontal beam and three degree of freedoms system. To validate the predicted changing mass and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.

  • This paper examines that it is possible to apply RWCIM for determining eigenvector coefficients associated with eigenvalues for V-notched cracks in anisotropic dissimilar materials using the complex stress function. To verify the RWCIM algorithm, two tests will be shown. First, it is performed to ascertain whether predicted coefficients associated with eigenvectors are obtained exactly. Second, it makes an examination of the state of stresses for FEM and RWCIM according to a number of eigenvectors at a location far away from the v-notched crack tip.

  • A technique for damage localization and assessment based on measurements of both eigenvectors curvatures and eigenfrequencies is proposed. The procedure is based on two successive steps: a model independent localization, based on changes of modal curvatures, and the solution of a one-dimensional minimization problem to evaluate damage intensity. The observability properties of damage parameters is discussed and, accordingly, a suitable change of coordinates is introduced. The proposed technique is illustrated with reference to a cantilever Euler beam endowed with a set of piezoelectric transducers. To assess the robustness of the algorithm, a parametric study of the identification errors with respect to the number of transducers and to the number of considered modal quantities is carried out with both clean and noise-corrupted data.

  • In this paper, we study the performance of subspace-based multiuser detection techniques for multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. We propose an improvement in the PASTd algorithm by cascading it with the classical Gram-Schmidt procedure to orthonormalize the eigenvectors after their sequential extraction. The tracking of signal subspace using this algorithm, which we call OPASTd, has a faster convergence as the eigenvectors are orthonormalized at each discrete time sample. This improved PASTd algorithm is then used to implement the subspace blind adaptive multiuser detection for MC-CDMA. We also show that, for multiuser detection, the complexity of the proposed scheme is lower than that of many other orthogonalization schemes found in the literature. Extensive simulation results are presented and discussed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

  • For generally damped linear systems with repeated eigenvalues and defective eigenvectors, this study provides a decomposition method based on residue matrix, which is suitable for engineering applications. Based on this method, a hybrid approach is presented, incorporating the merits of the modal superposition method and the residue matrix decomposition method, which does not need to consider the defective characteristics of the eigenvectors corresponding to repeated eigenvalues. The method derived in this study has clear physical concepts and is easily to be understood and mastered by engineering designers. Furthermore, this study analyzes the applicability of step-by-step methods, including the Newmark beta and Runge-Kutta methods for dynamic response calculation of defective systems. Finally, the implementation procedure of the proposed hybrid approach is illustrated by analyzing numerical examples, and the correctness and the effectiveness of the formula are judged by comparing the results obtained from the different methods.

  • This paper proposes a design methodology for the robust observer using the eigenstructure assignment in multi-output systems so that the observer is less sensitive to the ill-conditioning factors such as unknown initial estimation error, modeling error and measurement bias in transient and steady-state observer performance. The robustness of the observer can be achieved by selecting the desired eigenvector matrix to have a small condition number that guarantees the small upper bound of the estimation error. So the left singular vectors of the unitary matrix spanned by space of the achievable eigenvectors are selected as a desired eigenvectors. Also, this paper proposes how to select the desired eigenvector based on the measure of observability and designs the observer with small gain. An example of a spindle drive system is simulated to validate the robustness to the ill-conditioning factors in the observer performance.

  • We present finite element equations in the Laplace-domain for linear viscoelastic and viscoelstically damped structures governed by a constitutive equation involving factional order derivative opeartors. These equations yield a nonstandard eigenproblem consisted of frequency dependent stiffness matrix. To solve this nonstandard eigenproblem we suggest an eigenvalue iteration procedure in the Laplace-domain. Improved Zenor and GHM material function type constitutive equations in the Laplace-domain are also available for this procedure. From above equations, complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors are obtained. Using obtained eigenvalues and eigenvectors, time domain analysis is performed by means of mode superposition. Finally, finite element solutions of viscoelastic and viscoeleastically damped sandwich beam are presented as an example.

  • This paper presents an efficient eigensolution method for non-proportionally damped systems. The proposed method is obtained by applying the accelerated Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the linearized form of the quadratic eigenproblem. A step length and a selective scheme are introduced to increase the convergence of the solution. The step length can be evaluated by minimizing the norm of the residual vector using the least square method. While the singularity may occur during factorizing process in other iteration methods such as the inverse iteration method and the subspace iteration method if the shift value is close to an exact eigenvalue, the proposed method guarantees the nonsingularity by introducing the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors, which can be proved analytically. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • PCA(Principal Component Analysis) is a well-studied statistical technique and an important tool for handling multivariate data. Although many algorithms exist for PCA, most of them are unsuitable for real time applications or high dimensional problems. Since it is desirable to avoid extensive matrix operations in such cases, alternative solutions are required to calculate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the sample covariance matrix. Erdogmus et al. (2004) proposed Recursive PCA(RPCA), which is a fast adaptive on-line solution for PCA, based on the first order perturbation theory. It facilitates the real-time implementation of PCA by recursively approximating updated eigenvalues and eigenvectors. However, the performance of the RPCA method becomes questionable as the size of newly-added data increases. In this paper, we modified the RPCA method by taking advantage of the mathematical relation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of sample covariance matrix. We compared the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of RPCA, and found that the accuracy of the proposed method remarkably improved.

  • This paper presents a new technique that enhances the performance of the smart antenna system especially in signal environments of wide angular spread by adopting a weight vector obtained from two eigenvectors of theautocovariance matrix of the received data. While the conventional beamformingtechnique employs only one eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue, the proposed algorithm uses two eigenvectors corresponding to the largest and second largest eigenvalue in such a way that it can be robust enough to the signal environments of wide angular spread. An efficient adaptive procedure is shown to verify that the optimal weight vector consisting of the two eigenvectors is obtained with a reasonable complexity(3.5$N_2$+ 12N) and accuracy. it is also shown in this paper that the numerical results obtained from the proposed adaptive procedure well agree with those obtained from a commercial tool computing the eigen-function of MATLABTM.
