Ethanol extract of 20 botanicals in 3 concentrations i.e., 2.5%, 5% and 10% were evaluated for their efficacy to improve reproductive performance of mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mod L.) through feeding botanical enriched mulberry leaves during $2^{nd}$ day of $4^{th}$ age as well as $1^{st}$ and $3^{rd}$ day of $5^{th}$ age larvae. The preliminary screening was done by ranking the botanicals based on influence in most important reproductive contributing parameters such as single cocoon weight, effective rate of rearing, pupation rate, fecundity and recovery of eggs/kg cocoon. Five botanicals viz., Asparagus recemosus, Achyranthes aspera, Tribulus terrestris, Withania somnifera, Parthenium histerophorus ranked first were further evaluated at 8% 5% and 3% concentrations to confirm their effectiveness and standardize effective concentration. Among the rearing parameters, mature larval weight, shell ratio and number of cocoons/kg were not significantly influenced by the treatments. However, reproductive parameters such as effective rate of rearing (wt), pupation rate (%), fecundity (No.) and egg recovery (g)/kg cocoon were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the botanicals. Higher fecundity and egg recovery were obtained on treatment with Withania somnifera irrespective of concentrations. However at 5% concentration, pupation rate, fecundity as well as egg recovery were found significantly higher than that of other concentrations, confirming its effectiveness for improving reproductive efficiency.

71 cycles of 67 women were treated for superovulation induction in our IVF & ET program from May to September in 1988. Endogenous LH surges were occurred in 21 cycles out of 71 cycles. And then, we selected 50 cycles without endogenous LH surge treated in the same period as control group. We compared egg recovery rate, egg maturity, fertilization rate, cleavage rate and pregnancy rate of study group with those of control group. We were able to detect more than 90% of endogenous LH surge by commencing daily LH monitoring on MCD 9. The egg recovery rate, egg maturity, fertilization rate, and pregnancy rate of the study group were not statistically different from those of the control group. Significantly lower cleavage rate was seen in the study group compared with that of control group. Above results suggested that the cycles with endogenous LH surge do not have to be abandoned and can be treated continuously to achieve successful pregnancy.
A pretreatment procedure was performed to improve recovery of selenium from enriched egg and dried pork. Samples were digested with only $HNO_3$ in beaker at $150^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs, and Se was determined by ICP-MS. Recovery of selenium was 94.2%, and its C.V. value was 2.48%. The analytical results of Se by this method were 0.13 - 2.71 mg/kg for egg and 0.36 - 4.19 mg/kg for dried pork.

The aim of this study was to develop sample preparation method and evaluate the exact cholesterol content in egg and egg powder purchased from Korean markets, and to determine whether significant differences exist among various egg products, since a variety of products are available in Korean markets and there are no recent databases for cholesterol. To evaluate the cholesterol content in chicken egg sold in Korean local market, a simple method using non-heated saponification to determine cholesterol for emulsified foods was applied. The results of recovery for egg and egg powder were in a range of 92.4-105.0%, with a relative standard deviation between 1.1% and 2.8% by using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector. Therefore, the total cholesterol content in whole egg was estimated between 160.8 and 226.3 mg/egg (AV(average) $186.8{\pm}3.5$), which is similar or lower than previously reported levels. The value for cholesterol in egg powder was estimated between 2.94 and 3.49 mg/g (AV $3.23{\pm}0.15$). We suggested method that can be applicable to chicken egg and egg powder matrix as providing rapid and accurate determination of cholesterol in egg and egg powder. This information will be helpful for processed food producers for deciding food labels of cholesterol content.
The Hen's egg is widely used in many processed foods as an ingredient and is one of the most prevalent food allergens in children. To detect egg proteins in processed foods, we developed a competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ciELISA) using an anti-ovomucoid (OM) antibody, which was produced by immunization of rabbits with OM, the most heat-stable component of the egg proteins. The detection limit of this quantitative assay system was 30 ng/mL. Cross-reactivity of the anti-OM antibody toward OM, ovalbumin, skim milk, casein, whey protein isolate, and isolated soy protein was 100, 0.4, 0.2, 0.04, 0, and 0%, respectively. In the spike test of egg white powder in milk replacer, commercial sausage, and in-house sausage, the assay recoveries ($mean{\pm}SD$) were $129{\pm}13.7%$, $73.9{\pm}12.5%$, and $65.5{\pm}13.6%$, respectively. When egg white in a commercial crab meat analog and sausage was determined by ciELISA, the assay recovery was found to be 108% and 127%, respectively. The combined results of this study indicate that this novel ciELISA for OM detection could be applied for the quantification of hen's egg proteins in processed foods.

Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid) has been used as feed additives in poultry industries to improve production and control coccidiosis. The effect of high dietary levels of Roxarsone (ROX) on the performance and function of internal organs and the kinetics of recovery as well as its after-effects were examined in laying hens. The inclusion rates of ROX were 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg per kg feed. Inclusion up to 200 mg did not show any adverse effects (p>0.05), whereas in the 300 and 400 mg groups, significant effects, particularly in the latter, were observed for three weeks after ROX addition (p<0.05). Recovery of the physical appearance occurred soon after ROX addition was withdrawn. Recovery of performance and internal organs, however, appeared to be dependent on the amount of residual ROX in the body; as the amount of ROX decreased, the toxic effect of ROX also decreased. In the third week after the withdrawal of ROX, complete recovery was observed in the lower dosage groups (100 or 200 mg groups) (p>0.05), whereas in the higher dosage groups (300 or 400 mg groups), recovery took at least five weeks; when complete recovery was observed in egg production and in liver weight (p>0.05). On the other hand, ROX might have damaged the liver and other tissues. The recovery of liver weight was probably due to accumulation of fatty particles rather than repair. It appeared, therefore, there were little after-effects of ROX on the hen's physical appearance, but some internal organs were probably damaged.
In this study, we improved the eggshell-membrane separation process by separating the shell and membrane with EDTA solution, evaluating effects of three different extraction solutions (acetic acid, EDTA, and phosphate solution), and co-purifying multiple eggshell proteins with two successive ion-exchange chromatography procedures (CM Sepharose Fast Flow and DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow). The recovery and residual rates of eggshell and membrane separated by the modified method with added EDTA solution were 93.88%, 91.15% and 1.01%, 2.87%, respectively. Ovocleidin-116 (OC-116) and ovocalyxin-36 (OCX-36) were obtained by loading 50 mM Na-Hepes, pH 7.5, 2 mM DTT and 350 mM NaCl buffer onto the DEAE-FF column at a flow rate of 1 mL/min, ovocleidin-17 (OC-17) was obtained by loading 100 mM NaCl, 50 mM Tris, pH 8.0 on the CM-FF column at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The purities of OCX-36, OC-17 and OC-116 were 96.82%, 80.15% and 73.22%, and the recovery rates were 55.27%, 53.38% and 36.34%, respectively. Antibacterial activity test suggested that phosphate solution extract exhibited significantly higher activity against the tested bacterial strains than the acetic acid or EDTA extract, probably due to more types of proteins in the extract. These results demonstrate that this separation method is feasible and efficient.
This experiment was carried out to improve a simple and effective procedure of egg transfer which is considered to be the most useful technique for the improvementand proliferation of domestic animals. Several experiment procedures such as superovulation, surgical recovery of ovulated egg, in vitro capacitation of ejaculated spermatozoa, in vitro fertilization and culture of embryo were conducted. The results obtained in this experiment were summarized as follows: 1. In rabbits treated with PMS in combination with estradiol and HCG, 10 to 43 eggs were obtained in one rabbit and the average ovulation number of 20 rabbits was 21 eggs. 2. Six to 24 eggs (average 13 eggs) were recovered from the removed oviducts by the methods of flushing technique and the average recovery rate of 20 rabbits was 61.9 percent. 3. Most rabbit spermatozoa ejaculated by artificial vagina were capacitated in vitro by the culture of the spermatozoa with PBI medium at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours after removal of seminal plasma. 4. Normal fetilization following in vitro fetilization was observed in 88 (42.7%) of 206 eggs. 5. The number of eggs developed to 2-, 4-, and 8-cell stage following in vitro culture with PBI medium at 37$^{\circ}C$ was 26 (70.3%), 20 (54.1%) and 17 (45.9%) of 37 eggs used for in vitro culture.
The high density mixed mode adsorbent known by the trade name of Mimo-AD was used to purify lysozyme directly from the hen egg white (HEW). The homogenized hen egg white was treated with the adsorbent in a stirred vessel for lysozyme adsorption, and then the adsorbent, easily separated from the HEW by sedimentation, was packed into a column. The remaining HEW and contaminant proteins were removed by washing with pH 11 distilled water in an expanded-bed state, and subsequently the elution was performed with pH 12 distilled water in a packed-bed state. By this simple and rapid adsorption, washing, and elution procedure, lysozyme was purified to>95% with an overall recovery yield of 66%. This process offers a great potential for industrial application by allowing the extraction of lysozyme while retaining the commercial value of HEW.
Batch enzymatic hydrolysis of egg yolk protein by protease was carried out at laboratory scale coupled to an ultrafiltration module. Effect of ethanol concentrations on the performance of enzymatic hydrolysis was studied to determine the optimum condition of recovery of hydrolysate. The enzymatic hydrolysis was conducted stepwise with following conditions, $50^{\circ}C$, pH 10.0 and pH 6.5. Ethanol concentration was changed from 10 to $40\%$ (w/w). As ethanol concentration was increased, the recovery yield of total solid and protein in enzymatic hydrolysate was also increased. The content of sialic acid and protein in hydrolysate was independent of ethanol concentration. We also investigated the effect of ethanol concentration on the performance of ultrafiltration. As the concentration of ethanol in yolk protein was increased, the recovery yield of product was increased. Ultrafiltration of egg yolk protein hydrolysate was conducted to increase the content of sialic acid. Four ultrafiltation modules were used in this study, and we evaluated the performance of the UF modules. When Amicon module was used, the recovery percentage of total solid in retentate was $6.0\%$, which is the highest among the modules used. In spite of the difference in the recovery yield of total solid, the purity of sialic acid in retentate was about $2.0\%$, which was 5 times higher than that in feed. It was concluded that the recovery yield and the purity of sialic acid did not correlate with the types of modules and the size of MWCO.
