  • For commercialized servo drives of the motion stage to include embedded controller, external terminal is provided for tracking command and encoder output, but internal terminal is not for control input. Thus, it is difficult to combine out signal of embedded controller with that of external compensator such as disturbance observer. In this study, for precise tracking control of motion stage without hardware change of the servo drive, tacking control system is composed of an inner loop of servo drive and an outer loop of disturbance observer. Then, the control system is designed so that the output response of actual plant corresponds with nominal model's in transient state as well as in steady state. Finally, the experiment results show that the designed control system is effective to reconcile actual plant behavior with nominal model under nonlinear friction and parameter perturbation.

  • Stress intensity factors are numerically investigated for interfacial edge crack between two dissimilar composite plates jointed with single side composite patch. Variation of stress intensity factor under Mode I loading condition is examined for different material models and fiber orientation angles of composite plates and patch. ANSYS 12.1 finite element analysis software is used to obtain displacements of crack surfaces in the numerical solution and repaired plates are modeled in three dimensions. Obtained results are presented in the form of graphs. It is found that fiber orientation angle of composites is an effective parameter on interfacial stress intensity factor.

  • In this study, the image processing program for deducing parameters of the elliptic shape of the partially overlapped liquid droplets was developed using the randomized Hough transform and the parameter decomposition. The procedure for the shape detection consists of three steps. For the first step, the candidate centers of ellipses are determined by the geometric property of the ellipse. Next, the rest parameters are estimated by the randomized Hough transform. In the final step for the post-processing, optimally approximated parameters of ellipses are determined. The developed program was applied to the simulated overlapped ellipses, real overlapped droplets, and real spray droplets. The shape detection was very excellent unless there existed inherent problems in original images. Moreover, this method can be used as an effective separating method for the overlapped small particles.

  • This paper proposes the effective compensation method of the rotor time constant of induction motor. An indirect vector control method is highly dependent on the motor parameters. To solve the problem of performance degradation due to parameter variation in an indirect vector control of induction motor, we compensate the rotor time constant by current error feedback. The proposed method is a simple on-line rotor time constant compensation method using the information from terminal voltages and currents. As the current error, difference between current command and estimated current, approaches to zero, the value of rotor time constant in an indirect vector controller follows the real value of induction motor. This scheme is valid transient region as well as steady state region regardless of low or high speed. This method is verified by computer simulation. For this, we constructed the simulation model of induction motor, indirect vector controller and current regulated PWM (CRPWM) voltage source inverter (VSI) using SIMULINK in MATLAB.

  • This article describes the time delay control of the 3-dimensional motion of the container cranes used in dockside container terminals. The container is suspended by four flexible cables via spreader, and due to the disturbances such as the wind and acceleration of cranes, the container undergoes translational(sway) and rotational position errors. And due to the uncertainty of weight and rotational inertia, accurate position control of container crane is difficult to realize. This paper, based on the analysis of 3-dimensional dynamics of container moving systems, develops time delay control algorithm [1]. The developed control algorithm is shown effective in controlling the container position in the presence of gust and parameter uncertainties.

  • This paper discusses the design parameters that are required for the design of high-rise building foundations, and suggests that the method of assessment for these parameters should be consistent with the level of complexity involved for various stages in the design process. Requirements for effective ground investigation are discussed, together with relevant in-situ and laboratory test techniques for deriving the necessary strength and stiffness parameters. Some empirical correlations are also presented to assist in the early stages of design, and to act as a check for parameters that are deduced from more detailed testing. Pile load testing is then discussed and a method of interpreting bi-directional tests to obtain pile design parameters is outlined. Examples of the application of the assessment process are described, including high-rise projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

  • A methodology based on factorial design and Motto Carlo methods is developed and implemented for incorporating uncertainties within a multiphase subsurface flow and transport simulation system. Due to uncertainties in intrinsic permeability and longitudinal dispersivity, the predicted output is also uncertain based on the well-developed multiphase compositional simulator. The simulation results reveal that the uncertainties in input parameters pose considerable influences on the predicted output, and the mean and variance of permeability will have significant impacts on the modeling output. The proposed method offers an effective tool for evaluating uncertainty in multiphase flow simulation system.

  • In this paper, we introduce an encoder design technique of multiple symbol trellis coded modulation for noncoherent continuous phase frequency shift keying (MTCM/NCPFSK) on the interleaved Rician fading channel. To find dominant factors which affects the error probability of MTCM/NCPFSK, we derive the pairwise error probability (PEP) of MTCM/NCPFSK and find that the error probability mainly depends on the effective length of error event and the corresponding squared product distance (SPD) for the small value of Rician parameter K. Using this performance criteria, we search for the optimal encoder of MTCM/NCPFSK for the interleaved Rician fading channel. We also compare that encoder with the encoder designed for additive white Gaussian noise channel.

  • In this study, our primary goal is to classify the EMG(electromyographic) signals including the specific patterns related to hand motions in an arm. To do this, the EMG recognition method based on the LP coefficients and delay between multi-channels obtained by cross-correlation function is presented. The study consists of three functional parts, which are pans for obtaining the EMG signals from am muscle, analyzing LP coefficients and delay parameter obtained by cross-correlation function, and recognizing specific patterns. In the experiment, the result of the present method is compared with the results of the conventional methods. We expect that the results of this study is very effective in the mobile computer and wearable computer environment.

  • The characteristics of conjugated heat transfer in the inclined channel was experimentally investigated. The simulated module is attached to the bottom of the inclined channel and is heated with constant heat flux. The experimental parameters of this study are input power (Q = 3, 7W), inlet air velocity ($V_{i}=0.1{\sim}0.9m/s$) and inclined channel angle (${\varphi}=0{\sim}90^{\circ}$). The results show that input power was most effective parameter on the temperature differences between module and air. As the inclined channel angle increases, the temperatures of the module are increased. And we obtained the best condition on the conductive board when ${\varphi}=0^{\circ}$.
