Development of "Drink Smart" Alcohol Education Program for University Students: Application of the Intervention Mapping and Transtheoretical Model (대학생 절주교육 프로그램(과음없는 캠퍼스 만들기) 개발: Intervention Mapping과 Transtheoretical Model의 적용)

  • Objectives: This study attempted to apply the Intervention mapping and Transtheoretical models to develop a program to promote moderate alcohol drinking in university students. Methods: Surveyed data from 1,137 university students were analyzed to identify personal and environmental determinants for alcohol drinking. Based on these determinants, program objectives were established. Crossing the objectives with related important determinants resulted in matrices of learning objectives for which educational strategies were developed. Subsequently, an intervention program were designed to achieve those objectives. Results: Identified personal determinants included awareness, attitudes, self-efficacy and behavioral skills. Environmental determinants were binge drinking behaviors of family members and peers, and social pressure for drinking. Program, impact and learning objectives were developed to change the identified determinants. Program activities included provision of information on positive and negative consequences of binge drinking, opportunities for assessing one's drinking pattern, increasing outcome expectancies of and skill building for monitoring drinking, resisting peer pressure and managing stress. To facilitate adoption and maintenance of the program, an intervention diffusion plan was suggested. An evaluation plan was developed by utilizing RE-AIM framework. Conclusions: In order to expand evidence bases for effective theory-based programs, the developed program should be tested in diverse university settings.

  • Clay soils are typical for their swelling properties upon absorption of water during rains and development of cracks during summer time owing to the profile desorption of water through the inter-connected soil pores by water vapour diffusion leading to evaporation. This type of unstable soil phenomenon by and large poses a serious threat to the strength and stability of structures when rest on such type of soils. Even as lime and cement are extensively used for stabilization of clay soils it has become imperative to find relatively cheaper alternative materials to bring out the desired properties within the clay soil domain. In the present era of catastrophic environmental degradation as a side effect to modernized manufacturing processes, industrialization and urbanization the creative idea would be treating the waste products in a beneficial way for reuse and recycling. Bottom ash and ecosand are construed as a waste product from cement industry. An optimal combination of bottom ash-eco sand can be thought of as a viable alternative to stabilize the clay soils by means of an effective dispersion dynamics associated with the inter connected network of pore spaces. A CATIA model was created and imported to ANSYS Fluent to study the dispersion dynamics. Ion migration from the bottom ash-ecosand pile was facilitated through natural formation of cracks in clay soil subjected to atmospheric conditions. Treated samples collected at different curing days from inner and outer zones at different depths were tested for, plasticity index, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), free swell index, water content, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), pH and ion concentration to show the effectiveness of the method in improving the clay soil.

Effects of Action Oriented Breast Self-examination(BSE) Education on Knowledge, Self-efficacy, and Performance Competence in Nursing Students (행위중심적 유방자가검진 교육이 간호학생의 지식, 자기효능감 및 수행능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to test effects of action oriented BSE education on knowledge, selfefficacy, and performance competence in nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent pre-posttest of time serial quasi-experimental design was used to prevent diffusion of the experiment. Out of 53 nursing students selected by convenient sampling in the third grade at a nursing college, 27 students were randomly assigned to the control group and were first given a traditional lecture on BSE. For the experimental group of 26 students action oriented BSE education consisted of lectures, demonstrations with breast models, and BSE skill practice by micro teaching. Results: There was no significant difference in general and BSE-related characteristics between the two groups. Scores of the experimental group in knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance after the intervention were significantly higher than those of the control group. Conclusions: Results showed that action- oriented BSE education was effective in increasing knowledge, self-efficacy and performance competence in nursing students. Education for students should incorporate strategies reinforcing confidence by practicing actual BSE skills as well as acquiring knowledge of BSE, so that students can become competent and practical cancer prevention educators.

  • Far-infrared radiation therapies are becoming more popular for blood circulation disorders, cardiovascular disease, skin diseases, inhibit cancer cell, etc replacing conventional operations. In this research, thermal characteristics of heating part in panel radiators, which is effective on the blood circulation disorders were experimentally analyzed. The heating line supplies heat energy to insulation coatings with heat flux of $150mW/m^2$ in normal status and as a result the coatings reached 20% of the heating line temperature. In other words, the insulation itself could increase surface temperature of heating plates by 20% and raise thermal time constant promote blood circulation effect. We also found that space arrangement of the heating lines was an important factor in designing heating parts and both coefficient of heat conduction and density of the heating plate should be also considered for superimpose of thermal diffusion.

Phytochemicals and antioxidant capacity of some tropical edible plants

  • Objective: To find biological functions such as antibacterial and antioxidant activities in several tropical plants and to investigate the possibility of antibiotic substitute agents to prevent and treat diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria. Methods: Plants such as Poncirus trifoliata fruit (Makrut), Zingiber officinale Rosc (Khing), Areca catechu L. (Mak), Solanum melongena L. I (Makkhuayao), and Solanum melongena L. II (Makhurapro) were extracted by methanol, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. The free radical scavenging activities were measured using 2-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl photometric assay. Antibacterial activities with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were observed by agar diffusion assay against pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli, Burkholderia sp., Haemopilus somnus, Haemopilus parasuis, Clostridium perfringens, and Pantoea agglomerans. Results: Poncirus trifoliata fruit methanol extract showed antibacterial activities against gram-negative and gram-positive pathogens. Additionally, this showed the strongest antibacterial activity against Burkholderia sp. and Haemopilus somnus with MIC $131{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Areca catechu L. water extract showed antibacterial activities against Burkholderia sp., Haemopilus somnus, and Haemopilus parasuis. The MIC value for Haemopilus parasuis was $105{\mu}g/mL$ in this. Antioxidant activity of Zingiber officinale Rosc n-hexane extract showed 2.23 mg/mL effective concentration 50% ($EC_{50}$) value was the highest activity among tropical plants extracts. Total polyphenol content in Zingiber officinale Rosc methanol extract was $48.4{\mu}g/mL$ and flavonoid content was $22.1{\mu}g/mL$ showed the highest values among tested plants extracts. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that tropical plants used in this study may have a potential benefit as an alternative antibiotics agent through their antibacterial and antioxidant activities.

Analysis of Biocompatible TiO2 Oxide Multilayer by the XPS Depth Profiling

  • In this work, analysis of biocompatible TiO2 oxide multilayer by the XPS depth profiling was researched. the manufacture of the TiO2 barrier-type multilayer was accurately performed in a mixed electrolyte containing HAp, Pd, and Ag nanoparticles. The temperature of the solution was kept at approximatively $32^{\circ}C$ and was regularly rotated by a magnetic stirring rod in order to increase the ionic diffusion rate. The manufactured specimens were carefully analyzed by XPS depth profile to investigate the result of chemical bonding behaviors. From the analysis of chemical states of the TiO2 oxide multilayer using XPS, the peaks are showed with the typical signal of Ti oxide at 459.1 eV and 464.8 eV, due to Ti 2p(3/2) and Ti 2p(1/2), respectively. The Pd-3d peak was split into Pd-3d(5/2) and Pd-3d(3/2)peaks, and shows two bands at 334.7 and 339.9 eV for Pd-3d3 and Pd-3d5, respectively. Also, the peaks of Ag-3d have been investigated. The chemical states consisted of the O-1s, P-2p, and Ti-2p were identified in the forms of PO42- and PO43-. Based on the results of the chemical states, the chemical elements into the TiO2 oxide multilayer were also inferred to be penetrated from the electrolyte during anodic process.The structure characterization of the modified surface were performed by using FE-SEM, and from the result of biological evaluation in simulated body fluid(SBF), the biocompatibility of TiO2 oxide multilayer was effective for bioactive property.

Antimicrobial activities of Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) against oral bacteria (싸리버섯 추출물의 구강세균에 대한 항균활성)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to find out the antimicrobial activities of Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) extracts against oral pathogens. Methods: The antimicrobial activities of Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) extracts were evaluated against oral pathogens by the disc diffusion assay, and the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ethyl acetate extracts were determined by broth dilution method. The strains used in this study were Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus ratti, Streptococcus criceti, Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces viscosus and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Results: The ethyl acetate extract of Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) effectively inhibited the growth of oral bacteria compared with acetone or ethanol extract. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited MIC values ranging from 3.75 to 15.00 mg/ml, and it showed antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and negative oral bacteria. Conclusions: The ethyl acetate extracts from Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) showed the antimicrobial activities against ten oral bacteria. Thus, the extract of Ramaria botrytis (Fr.) may be considered as an effective natural antimicrobial agent for the prevention of oral pathogens.

  • There has been rapid diffusion of digital innovation technology(DIT) such as 3 D CAD, CAE, simulation software which enable firms to see the future results of intended product designs through 3 D diagram and simulated results. This technology helps firms to reduce trial and error process by solving later stage problems in earlier stages. The DIT being the technology reflecting the real world, as a tool representing the simplified form of the real world, the degree of reflecting the real world(fidelity) is important in utilizing the DIT. This study is an exploratory research examining the process of reviewing the fidelity of the DITs and developing the complementary process necessary for utilizing the DIT with 'not good enough' fidelity. This study could draw out, from its case study, an exploratory hypothesis about the process of developing the complementary process. In the process, there is an analysis of the corresponding relationship between the actual data and the output data of the DIT, e.g. simulated result. Then the input data or output data are adjusted on the basis of the analysis of the corresponding relationship so that the discrepancy between the actual data and the expected interpretation of the output data, through the adjustment, of the DIT, can be reduced. This process is sometimes accompanied by the process of generating experimental data, which reflect the unique situation of the product development process of a company, to be put to the data base of DIT. The complementary process is the process requiring knowledge sharing and adjustment activities across different divisions. This study draw outs implications for effective management of the fidelity of DIT tools.

Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Efficacy of Helminthostachys zeylanica against Foodborne Bacillus cereus

  • Helminthostachys zeylanica is a rare plant grows in lightly shaded areas. The fern was traditionally used as antipyretic and antiphlogistic agents. This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial potential of H. zeylanica on foodborne Bacillus cereus. The chemical composition of its ethanolic extract was also determined. The plant samples were collected at Kampung Kebun Relong, Kedah, Malaysia. The ethanolic extract showed significant inhibitory activity on B. cereus with a sizeable clear zone detected on disc diffusion assay. On broth microdilution assay, the MIC of the extract on B. cereus was 6.25 mg/ml and the MBC was 12.5 mg/ml. The inhibitory activity of the extract on B. cereus was bactericidal. In the growth dynamic study, the antibacterial efficacy of the extract was concentration dependent, where a lower colony forming unit count was obtained with increased extract concentration. The SEM micrograph of extract treated B. cereus cells showed invaginations of cell wall. The bacterial cell structure collapsed after 24 h exposure to the extract. The GCMS analysis of the extract showed that the major constituents of the extract were phenol (36.26%) and quercetin (29.70%). This study is important as it shows the potential use of H. zeylanica as an effective agent to control B. cereus related infections.

Carbon tip growth by electron beam deposition (전자빔 조사에 의한 탄소상 탐침의 성장)

  • Carbon tips were grown on Si cantilevers by applying an electron beam to them directly with Scanning Electron Microscope. A carbon tip was fabricated by aligning the electron beam directly down the vertical axis of Si cantilever and then irradiating a single spot on the cantilever for a proper time in the dominant atmosphere of residual gases generated by the oil of the diffusion pump. A number of control parameters for SEM, including exposure time, acceleration voltage, emission current, and beam probe current, were allowed to make various aspect ratio feature. The growth of carbon tips was not affected by the surface morphology of substrates. We could acquired the tip whose effective length is 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$, bottom diameter is 90 nm and cone half angle $3.5^{\circ}$ The growth technique of the high aspect ratio carbon tips on the tip-free cantilevers is available to reduce the complexities of fabricating sub-micron scale tips on the PZT thin film actuator integrated AFM cantilevers.
