  • In this study engineered steel fibres used as reinforcement for concrete were characterized by number of key mechanical and spatial parameters, which are easy to measure and quantify. Such commonly used parameters as length, diameter, fibre intrinsic efficiency ratio (FIER), hook geometry, tensile strength and ductility were considered. Effective classification of various fibres was demonstrated using simple multivariate computations involving principal component analysis (PCA). Contrary to univariate data mining approach, the proposed analysis can be efficiently adapted for fast, robust and direct classification of engineered steel fibres. The results have revealed that in case of particular spatial/geometrical conditions of steel fibres investigated the FIER parameter can be efficiently replaced by a simple aspect ratio. There is also a need of finding new parameters describing properties of steel fibre more precisely.

  • With the Hertzian contact theory, it is possible to determine the bearing load distributing pattern among the balls and rollers and also variations of the load-displacement relationships for rolling elements contacting raceways according to bearing clearance, load distribution, contact forces and dimensions of bearing components (i.e diameter of raceway and rolling elements), etc. In this paper the calculation theories of contact load and normal approach between two raceways under radial load are reviewed, and compared these calculation results with those of experimental results. A new calculation theory for elastic displacement of outer-race of ball bearing under radial load is developed by authors by application of energy method, which is independent on the effects of roughness, bending or eccentricity of bearing with driving shaft, and is effective in measuring the location of its defect.

  • In the present work the influence of various physical parameters on the two-phase flow behavior in a self-heated porous medium has been studied using a numerical model, that is, the effects of heat generation rate, of porosity, of particle size, and of system pressure on the dryout process. To analyze the effect of these parameters, the variation of both liquid volumetric fraction (i.e., liquid saturation) and liquid axial velocity is evaluated at the steady state or at the onset of a first boiled-out region. The analysis of computational results indicate that a qualitative tendency exists between the parameters such as heat generation rate, porosity, effective particle diameter and the temporal development of the liquid volumetric fraction field up to dryout. In addition to these parameters, a variation of fluid properties such as phase density, phase viscosity due to a change of system pressure can be used for gaining insight into the nature of two-phase flow behavior up to dryout.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out for two circular cylinders having different groove configurations(U and V-shape). The results were compared with those for the smooth circular cylinder. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number $Re=8000{\sim}14,000$ based on the cylinder diameter. As a results, the U-groove circular cylinder was found to be most effective riblet shape with reducing the drag up to 21%. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency of the grooved cylinders becomes a little larger, compared to the smooth cylinder. The flow visualization using the smoke-wire technique was also carried out to see the flow structure qualitatively.

  • Recently, the power consumption and heat generation in an electronic equipment increase as the components are miniaturized and the computing speed becomes faster. Effective cooling method is required to ensure the guaranteed performance and reliable operation of the electronic devices. The aim of the present study is to investigate the cooling characteristics of a pin-fin heat exchanger as a candidate for cooling system of the electronic devices. Various configuration of the pin-fin array is selected in order to find out the effect of spacing and diameter of the pin-fin on the heat transfer characteristics. The results are compared with the experimental data or correlations of several researchers for the channel flow with pin-fin arrays.

  • An effective light-managing structure has been achieved by using a nano-imprint method. A transparent conductor of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) was periodically nanodome-shaped to have a height of 200 nm with a diameter of 340 nm on a p-type Si substrate. This spontaneously formed a heterojunction between the ITO layer and Si substrate and effectively reduced the light-reflection. The ITO nanodome device response was significantly enhanced to 6010 from the value of 72.9 of a planar ITO film. The transparent conducting ITO nanodome structure efficiently manipulates the incident light driving into the light-absorber and can be applied in various photoelectric applications.

  • The effect of fuel composition and coaxial air on the nitrogen oxide emission index was studied in a non-premixed turbulent jet flame. Validity of experimental setup and methodology is checked. The NOx emission trend is similar with previous works in hydrogen flame, but it's not well in $H_2/CO$ flame. Normalized EINOx scaling with modified $S_G$ applying near-field concept was conducted. Experimental data don't collapse single correlation curve, but partially same trend is observed in all cases.

  • A propeller type mistblower was designed and manufactured. The machine consisted of a 770 millimeters diameter propeller driven by the power take off of a tractor. It delivered 26,400 cubic meters of air per hour and has the outlet speed about 180 kilometers per hour. Spray liquid was injected at 30 bars pressure through hollow cone type nozzles which were located around the air outlet of the machine bya poston type pump. Power consumption of the machine was found to be 12.46 kilowatts and the effective forward travel speed was about 2.7 kilometers per hour. Upon spraying mango trees, it was shown that the density of spray partices was about 100 microns and consumed 3.12 liters per tree. Working speed in 6 meters row spacing mango orchard was about one hectare per hour.

  • The large deformation at cryogenic temperature is expected as one of the effective methods to produce large bulk ultrafine grained materials. The effects of annealing temperature, 150∼$300^{\circ}C$, on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated, in comparison with those at room temperature. Annealing of 5083 Al alloy deformed 85%, at $200^{\circ}C$ for an hour,. resulted in the considerable increase of tensile elongation without the great loss of strength and the occurrence of equiaxed grains less than 300nm in diameter.

  • In this paper, we investigate a new method to measure the thickness of thin transparent objects utilizing a step index multi-mode optical fiber sensor. The method mainly depends on the refraction rate of transparent target, the diameter of optical fibers and the distance to reflector. We confirmed the effects of these parameters through the experimental verification tests. The comparison between the theoretical vs. analytical results shows good agreements with each other. The proposed model also enables users to measure the thickness of thin transparent objects without considering the reflection from the target. This approach provides simple, cost-effective and non-contact solutions to measure the thickness.
