  • This study investigates the hatching periods and hatchability of the eggs of Pochazia shantungensis at different collection times from 2011 to 2014, and the effect of temperature on the growth of P. shantungensis nymphs in an area of its outbreak. The hatchability of P. shantungensis eggs varies with their collection time; their hatchability in late November was higher than that in March of the next year, but no difference was observed in their hatching periods. The hatching periods of the eggs were 51.2, 31.3, 24.8, 19.4, 17.1, and 19.4 days at 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The hatchability was above 70% at temperatures ranging from 18 to $27^{\circ}C$. The hatching time of the overwintered eggs in the Gurye region in Korea was reduced by 9 days from 2011 to 2014. The hatching rate was relatively higher when the average temperature in the winter season was relatively warmer. The dvelopmental periods of the first to fifth nymphs were 82.8, 58.0, 45.8, and 39.6 days at 18, 21, 24, and $27^{\circ}C$, respectively, at the relative humidity of 40~70%, and a photoperiod off 14 h light:10 h dark. The higher the temperature, the shorter the developmental period. At $30^{\circ}C$, all life stages after the fourth nymph died. Thus, the optimum growth temperature was estimated to be $27^{\circ}C$. For all life stages from the egg to the fourth nymph, the relationship between the temperature and developmental rate was expressed by the linear equation Y = 0.0015 X - 0.014. The lower developmental threshold was $9.3^{\circ}C$ and the effective cumulative temperature was 693.3 degree-days. The lower developmental threshold of approximately $3.8^{\circ}C$ was the lowest at the fourth nymph stage.

  • It is well known that the mid gut polyhedroses can be a cause of serious disease of silkworm in Japan. In our country, however, this disease has not been discussed up to the present. Author made the experiments to know whether this disease aws infectious or not in our country. The results are as follows: 1. The mid-gut polyhedroses was induced by some artificial treatments, of which the most effective one was low temperature treatment (at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours) at the 5th instar before first feeding. 2. Author found a few infected silkworms which were reared by a farmer in fall in 1964. It was supposed that the induction of this disease was due to the cumulative effects of the bad conditions on the silkworms. Especially the great cause of this disease depended on the quality of the mulberry leaves.

  • The swelling and hydration properties of Korean red ginseng tails and yield of total solids in extract were studied during extraction with ethanol solution having a concentration of 0-90% at $60-100^{\circ}C$. Extraction was carried out 5 times which was taken 8 hours per each time of extraction. The swelling, hydration and total solids yield were increased as the ethanol concentration decreased and as the extraction temperature raised. The cumulative value of solids yield suggested that three times of extractions with water or 70% ethanol were effective to recover more than 84%. Linear regression analysis on the properties investigated and extraction conditions showed a linear logarithmic relationship .

  • We investigated the reproductive behavior of Octopus minor, order Octopoda, class Cephalopoda under laboratory conditions. Each mature female octopus was kept in an aquarium with a plastic tube for shelter, and one mature male was introduced for the purpose of copulation. Before spawning, the female coated the roof of the shelter with a light-green material, upon which it then fixed its eggs one by one. This spawning behavior lasted 1 to 3 days. Fertilized females spawned 54 eggs on average, ranging from 21 to 112 eggs at 72 to 98 days after copulation. The attached eggs were 18.1-19.0 mm in length, 5.0-6.1 mm in width, and 0.30-0.38 g in weight. The mother octopods did not feed; they attended to the eggs by using their arms to rub the egg surfaces and used their funnel to blow sediments off of the eggs. At water temperatures of $20.9-21.5^{\circ}C$, the fertilized eggs hatched within 73 to 90 days after being spawned. The effective cumulative water temperature was $1,569-1,892^{\circ}C$. At the end of incubation, the body weight of the mother octopods was reduced to approximately 56% of the initial weight, and most mother octopods died soon after the young hatched.

  • In this study, the removal of Ciprofloxacin (CPX) from aqueous solutions was investigated by a new activated carbon adsorbent prepared from orange peel (ACOP) with chemical activation using ZnCl2. The physicochemical properties of orange peel activated carbon were characterized by proximate and ultimate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, BET surface area determination and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopic studies. According to Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherm and non-local-density functional theory, the cumulative surface area, pore volume and pore size of ACOP were determined as 1193 m2 g-1, 0.83 cc g-1 and 12.7 Å, respectively. The effects of contact time, pH, temperature and ACOP dose on the batch adsorption of CPX were studied. Adsorption equilibrium data of CPX with ACOP were found to be compatible with both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. CPX adsorption capacity of ACOP was calculated as 181.8 mg g-1 using Langmuir isotherm. The CPX adsorption kinetics were found to be harmonious with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Conclusively, ACOP can be assessable as an effective adsorbent for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CPX) from aqueous solutions.

  • The development of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was studied at temperatures ranging from 15 to $32.5^{\circ}C$ under $70{\pm}5\%$ RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). Mortality of 1st-2nd nymph was higher than that of 3rd-4th nymph at the most temperature ranges whereas at high temperature of $32.5^{\circ}C$, more 3-4nymph stage individuals died. The total developmental time ranged from 12.4 days at $15^{\circ}C$ to 4.9 days at $27.5^{\circ}C$, suggesting that higher the temperature, faster the development. However, at higher end temperature ranges of 30 and $32.5^{\circ}C$, the development took 5.0 and 6.3 days, respectively. The lower developmental threshold temperature and effective accumulative temperatures for the total immature stage were $4.9^{\circ}C$ and 116.5 day-degrees. The nonlinear shape of temperature related development was well described by the modified Sharpe and DeMichele model. When the normalized cumulative frequency distributions of developmental times for each life stage were fitted to the three-parameter Weibull function, attendance of shortened developmental times was apparent with pre-nymph, post-nymph, and total nymph stages in descending order. The coefficient of determination $r^2$ ranged between 0.87 and 0.94.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on the developmentof Delia platura (Meigen) under a laboratory condition at five different temperatures. The developmentalperiods of D. platurcr from egg to adult emcrgence at the temperatures of 11, 15, 19, 23, and 27$^{\circ}$C were67.8k 14.5, 43.7t-9.4, 31.2-t-7.0, 22.4k4.9, and 18.3k4.1 days, respectively. Based on these results, threshold temperature of development and effective cumulative degree-day (DD) for overall developmentwas 0.6"C and 579.8 DD, respectively. Generation of time D. pluturci averaged 30.8 days, and meannumber of eggs produced per female was 246.5 k 16.9 at 23$^{\circ}$C. Hatching rate and emergence rate curvesin relation to the temperature was dome shaped with the peak of 90.0 and 85.2% at 23"C, it wassuggesting that hatching and emergence were inhibited by high temperature above that temperature.Pupation rate of the insect reared on garlic and on onion were higher than those reared on other diets.Oviposition of D. platum usually began 7-9 days after emergence at 23$^{\circ}$C. Females laid about 3-4 eggsin a day. Oviposition of the females peaked at the age of 12- 18 days after emergence. of 12- 18 days after emergence.

  • The Hawaiian beet webworm (Spoladea recurvalis) is one of the serious insect pests found on red beet (Beta vulgaris var. conditiva) in Korea. The study was conducted to investigate the development period of S. recurvalis at various constant temperatures, 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5 and $35.0^{\circ}C$, with $65{\pm}5%$ RH and a photoperiod of 16L:8D. The developmental period from egg to pre-adult was 51.0 days at $17.5^{\circ}C$ and 14.6 days at $35.0^{\circ}C$. The developmental period of S. recurvalis was decreased with increasing temperature. The relationship between the developmental rate and temperature was fitted well by linear regression analysis ($R^2{\geq}0.87$). The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperature of the total immature stage were $10.4^{\circ}C$ and 384.7 degree days, respectively. The nonlinear relationship between the temperature and developmental rate was well described by the Lactin model. The relationship between the cumulative frequency and normalized distributions of the developmental period for each life stage were fitted to the Weibull function with $R^2=0.63{\sim}0.87$.

  • The effect of water temperature on spawning induction, larval development, spat settling and its growth of the cockle shell, Fulvia mutica, were investigated to obtain the basic data for effective seed production. The eggs, which were randomly divided into 6 groups of water temperatures of 14, 17, 20, 23, 26 and $29^{\circ}C$, were transferred into 1 L beaker, respectively. The relationships between the water temperature and the required time (1/h, hour) by each egg developmental stage were calculated. Biological minimum water temperature and the cumulative water temperature until egg development of the veliger stage were calculated to be $0.1^{\circ}C$ and $397.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimal water temperature for developmental bioassay of F. mutica was clarified to be $23^{\circ}C$. The required time for the embryo to become veliger larvae was 20 hours at $23^{\circ}C$.

  • Improvement in rice grain yield has been approached by means of genetic amendment, cultural management, and environmental adaptation. Subjecting the plant during the grain filling period to an appropriate environment plays a key role in achieving a high grain yield in temperate rice. Field experiments were conducted for two consecutive years with two planting times to assess the relations among grain filling traits, loss of leaf activity during the ripening period, and the grain yield of temperate japonica rice with wide environmental variation. Higher grain yields were attained in 2017 than in 2016 and with late planting than with early planting. The high grain yield accompanied a comparatively lesser increase in grain weight at the early filling stage but more gain in grain weight occurred during the late filling stage. Final grain weight correlated positively with grain filling duration but negatively with grain filling rate. Extended grain filling duration was associated with higher cumulative temperature and cumulative solar radiation for an effective grain filling period. The reduction in SPAD value ${\times}$ leaf dry weight from heading to harvest significantly correlated with final grain dry weight in a positive manner. No significant relation was found between grain filling duration and the decrease in SPAD value ${\times}$ leaf dry weight during the grain filling period. The results suggest that grain filling duration and loss of leaf activity during ripening independently contribute to environmentally induced yield improvement in temperate japonica rice.
