전기분해에 의한 고농도 유기물질 제거 특성 (Removing High Concentration Organic Matters by Using Electrolysis)

  • 합성폐수의 전기분해에 의한 전류밀도, 체류시간, 전극간격 및 $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ 비에 대한 유기물질 제거 특성을 조사하기 위한 실험을 수행하였다. 양극판은 티타늄에 이산화이리듐을 전착한 $Ti/IrO_2$ 극판으로 하였으며, 음극판은 스테인리스 스틸판을 사용하였다. 판형태와 망형태의 전극을 사용한 경우 $COD_{Cr}$ 제거율은 비슷하게 나타났으나, 전력비는 판형태보다 망형태의 전극에서 저렴한 것으로 나타났다. $COD_{Cr}$ 제거율 70 %를 얻는데 소요되는 $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ 비는 약 $1.3kgCl^-/kgCOD_{Cr}$으로 나타났으며, $COD_{Cr}$을 완전히 제거하는데 약 $2.2kgCl^-/kgCOD_{Cr}$이 필요하였다. 유기물질의 제거는 전류밀도, 체류시간 및 $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ 비에 따라 높게 나타났고, 전극간격에는 반비례하였으며, 운전인자와 제거율과의 관계는 아래와 같이 나타났다. $$COD_{Cr}(%)=80.0360(Current\;density)^{0.4451}{\times}(HRT)^{0.8102}{\times}(Gap)^{-0.4915}{\times}(Cl^-/COD_{Cr})^{0.5805}$$ 유기물질과 질소를 동시에 전기분해할 경우 두 물질의 산화는 경쟁관계에 있으며, 암모니아성 질소를 산화하는데 우선적으로 작용하여 유기물질의 제거는 낮아지지만, 알칼리도 첨가에 의해 유기물질 제거가 증가하였다.

Bio-drying 공법을 이용한 음식물류 폐기물 분해 특성 평가 및 고형연료로서의 가치 평가 (Estimation of Characteristics Treatment for Food Waste and Valuable as Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF) using Bio-drying Process)

  • 본 연구에서는, 높은 함수율을 가진 음식물류 폐기물을 Bio-dying 공법을 이용하여 처리하였을 때 수분과 유기물의 변화정도를 분석하였으며 음식물류 폐기물 처리 시 온도와 염도가 Bio-dying 공법의 운전특성에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 또한, Bio-drying 후 분해산물의 SRF(Solid Refuse Fuel)로서의 가치 평가를 위한 펠렛 제조의 최적조건 도출 및 SRF의 발열량 분석을 통한 고형연료로서의 가치를 평가하였다. 그 결과, 1일 투입량에 따른 온도, $CO_2$ 농도, 유기물 제거율과 무게 감소율 값을 분석하였다. 유기물 제거율과 무게 감소율은 투입량 2.4 kg/day에서 각각 86%, 68%로 최대값을 나타내었다. 이를 통해 최적 음식물류 폐기물 투입량은 2.4 kg/day라 판단되었다. 펠렛 성형 결과, 원료 함수율이 10~25% 이내에서 펠렛 제조가 가능하고, 외형유지와 강도면에서 가장 좋은 품질결과를 보여준 함수율 25%가 가장 적합하다고 판단되었다. Bio-drying 후 분해산물의 SRF 고위발열량은 3,500 kcal/kg 이상의 값을 나타내었다.

인명안전 관점에서 선박 화재 시 급·배기조건에 따른 배연성능 예측평가 (Smoke Exhaust Performance Prediction According to Air Supply and Exhaust Conditions for Shipboard Fires from a Human Safety Point of View)

  • 선박의 기계식 환기시스템은 화재발생 시 연기의 생성과 확산 특성에 영향을 미치고, 이는 피난자의 피난경로 상의 가시도를 방해함으로써 피난자의 연기로 인한 피해를 증가시킬 위험성이 크다. 이에 이 연구에서는 선박 거주구역에서 화재발생 시 기계식 급 배기시스템이 연기확산에 미치는 영향과 위험성에 대하여 FDS를 활용하여 평가하고 화재 시 급 배기시스템을 효율적으로 사용할 수 있는 방안을 제안하였다. 연구결과 화재가 발생한 장소에 급 배기시스템이 함께 작동되고 있는 경우에는 현재 권장되고 있는 급 배기시스템을 멈추는 방법보다 작동을 유지하는 것이 효과적이고, 배기시스템만 작동되는 곳에서 화재가 발생한 경우에는 화재가 발생한 구역 이외의 구역에서 급기시스템을 함께 작동시키는 것이 피난시간을 확보하는데 효과적인 것으로 예측되었다. 그러나 화재가 발생한 곳에 급기시스템만 있는 경우에는 급기시스템이 연기확산을 가속시키기 때문에 급기방식을 중단시켜 연기의 확산을 최대한 억제할 필요가 있음을 확인하였다.

Compost, Peatmoss, GAC의 복합 메디아로 충전된 Biofilter의 Toluene 제어특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Toluene Control Characteristics of Biofilter Packed with Compost, Peatmoss and GAC)

  • The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effect of media on the performance of biofilters. Two types of experiments were carried out in this study. The first type of experiment used a biofilter with the media composed of three different packing materials of compost, peatmoss and GAC(granular activated carbon), whereas the second type used a biofilter with the media composed of compost only. It was found from the two experiments that the biofilter composed of compost, peatmoss and GAC showed better performance than the one composed of compost only with the higher toluene removal efficiency, lower pressure drop, and more uniform media moisture content. In particular, no appreciable media compression occurred for the biofilter composed of compost, peatmoss and GAC, whereas significant media compression took place in the biofilter composed of compost only. As suggested by the other researchers, it is likely that GAC may be responsible for the higher toluene removal efficiency in the case of the biofilter composed of mixed media especially for the early stage of biofiltration due to its adsorption capability of toluene of such high concentration as 300 ppm. It was also regarded that GAC may playa major role in maintaining lower media pressure drop in the case of the mixed media than the media with compost only because of its mechanical strength resisting to the compression. Nonetheless, further refined experiments may need to draw more accurate conclusion. The results of the additional test run using the same mixed media showed that the biofilter system using the mixed media can be consistently operated for more than 100 days very stably despite sudden change in operating conditions of temperature and flow rate.

자동차 엔진 폐열 회수 동력시스템에서 용적형 팽창기의 설계 팽창비 최적화 (Optimization of Design Pressure Ratio of Positive Displacement Expander for Engine Waste Heat Recovery of Vehicle)

  • 본 연구에서는 가솔린 엔진 자동차의 엔진 폐열 회수를 위한 이중 회로 랭킨 사이클 시스템에서 용적형 팽창기의 설계 팽창비에 따른 성능 해석이 수행되었다. 자동차 엔진 폐열 이용 랭킨 사이클 시스템에 사용되는 용적형 팽창기는 운전 조건에 따라 설계 팽창비가 운전 압력비보다 낮은 저팽창 조건과 설계 팽창비가 운전 압력비보다 높은 과팽창 조건으로 운전되므로 탈설계 조건에서 성능 예측이 중요하다. 또한 용적형 팽창기는 자동차 적용시 팽창효율 뿐만 아니라 부피와 무게를 최소화하는 것이 매우 중요하므로 이를 고려한 설계 팽창비의 최적화가 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 용적형 팽창기의 탈설계 조건에서 성능 예측을 통해 팽창효율과 팽창기의 용적을 동시에 고려하여 설계 팽창비를 목표 운전 압력비보다 낮도록 하여 저팽창 운전을 하도록 설계 하는 것이 유리함을 제시하였다.

Bioaugmentation이 간헐폭기 오수처리장치의 운전효율에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Bioaugmentation on Performance of Intermittently Aerated Sewage Treatment Plant)

  • In order to improve reactor performance of existing sewage treatment plants, the feasibility of enhancing reactor performance by bioaugmentation using EM as bioaugmentation agent and the effects of anoxic: oxic time ratio on reactor performance were investigated. Continuous and intermittent aeration modes were compared under the 6 hr of HRT. Three different types of intermittent aeration modes, that is, 15 min, of anoxic:45 min of oxic, 30 min of anoxic: 30 min of oxic, and 45 min of anoxic: 15 min oxic respectively were chosen as test modes to study the effects of anoxic : oxic time ratios on reactor performance. The optimum anoxic: oxic time ratio was 30 min:30 min when considering simultaneous removal of organic, nitrogen and phosphorus. When applying EM into a continuously aerated reactor under the varying dosing rates of 50-200 ppm, reactor performance in terms of organic and nitrogen removal efficiencies was not improved at all. Nitrogen removal efficiency was increase when the EM dosing rate was increased. However the degree of improvement was slight when the EM was injected above 100 ppm. However optimum phosphorus removal was found at the EM dosing of 200 ppm. Thus it was found that optimum injection concentration of EM is 200 ppm. It is apparent that putting EM into a sewage treatment plant significantly affects the T-N removal efficiency of the reactor by enhancing denitrification efficiency especially in operational conditions of relatively long anoxic periods. To achieve reciprocal condition in a reactor with intermittent aeration it is necessary to enhance the reactor performance by EM injection. In the case of modifying existing continuously aerated reactors into intermittent aerated reactors, it is obvious that operating costs of aeration would be reduced by reducing aeration time when compared with existing conventional sewage treatment plants.

Comparison of a Cation Exchange Membrane and a Ceramic Membrane in Electrosynthesis of Ammonium Persulfate by a Pilot Experimental Study

  • In order to improve the current efficiency and reduce the energy consumption in the electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate, electrolytic properties of a perfluorosulfonic cation exchange membrane named PGN membrane and the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane in the electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate were studied and compared in a pilot electrolytic cell using a welded platinum titanium as the anode and a Pb-Sb alloy as the cathode. The effect of cell voltage, electrolyte flow rate and electrolysis time of the electrolytes on the current efficiency and the energy consumption were studied. The results indicated that the PGN membrane could improve current efficiency to 95.12% and reduce energy consumption to $1110kWh\;t^{-1}$ (energy consumption per ton of the ammonium persulfate generated) under the optimal operating conditions and the highest current efficiency of the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane was 72.61% with its lowest energy consumption of $1779kWh\;t^{-1}$. Among 5 times of the electrolysis of the electrolytes, the lowest current efficiency of the PGN membrane was 85.25% with the highest energy consumption of $1244kWh\;t^{-1}$ while the lowest current efficiency of the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane was 67.44% with the highest energy consumption of $1915kWh\;t^{-1}$, which suggested the PGN membrane could be used in the 5-stage electrolytic cell for the industrially continuous electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate. Therefore the PGN membrane can be efficient to improve the current efficiency and reduce the energy consumption and can be applied in the industrial electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate.

Tunnel wall convergence prediction using optimized LSTM deep neural network

  • Evaluation and optimization of tunnel wall convergence (TWC) plays a vital role in preventing potential problems during tunnel construction and utilization stage. When convergence occurs at a high rate, it can lead to significant problems such as reducing the advance rate and safety, which in turn increases operating costs. In order to design an effective solution, it is important to accurately predict the degree of TWC; this can reduce the level of concern and have a positive effect on the design. With the development of soft computing methods, the use of deep learning algorithms and neural networks in tunnel construction has expanded in recent years. The current study aims to employ the long-short-term memory (LSTM) deep neural network predictor model to predict the TWC, based on 550 data points of observed parameters developed by collecting required data from different tunnelling projects. Among the data collected during the pre-construction and construction phases of the project, 80% is randomly used to train the model and the rest is used to test the model. Several loss functions including root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were used to assess the performance and precision of the applied method. The results of the proposed models indicate an acceptable and reliable accuracy. In fact, the results show that the predicted values are in good agreement with the observed actual data. The proposed model can be considered for use in similar ground and tunneling conditions. It is important to note that this work has the potential to reduce the tunneling uncertainties significantly and make deep learning a valuable tool for planning tunnels.

Study on the effect of long-term high temperature irradiation on TRISO fuel

  • In the core of the WWR-K reactor, a long-term irradiation of tristructural isotopic (TRISO)-coated fuel particles (CFPs) with a UO2 kernel was carried out under high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR)-like operating conditions. The temperature of this TRISO fuel during irradiation varied in the range of 950-1100 ℃. A fission per initial metal atom (FIMA) of uranium burnup of 9.9% was reached. The release of gaseous fission products was measured in-pile. The release-to-birth ratio (R/B) for the fission product isotopes was calculated. Aspects of fuel safety while achieving deep fuel burnup are important and relevant, including maintaining the integrity of the fuel coatings. The main mechanisms of fuel failure are kernel migration, silicon carbide corrosion by palladium, and gas pressure increase inside the CFP. The formation of gaseous fission products and carbon monoxide leads to an increase in the internal pressure in the CFP, which is a dominant failure mechanism of the coatings under this level of burnup. Irradiated fuel compacts were subjected to electric dissociation to isolate the CFPs from the fuel compacts. In addition, nondestructive methods, such as X-ray radiography and gamma spectrometry, were used. The predicted R/B ratio was evaluated using the fission gas release model developed in the high-temperature test reactor (HTTR) project. In the model, both the through-coatings of failed CFPs and as-fabricated uranium contamination were assumed to be sources of the fission gas. The obtained R/B ratio for gaseous fission products allows the finalization and validation of the model for the release of fission products from the CFPs and fuel compacts. The success of the integrity of TRISO fuel irradiated at approximately 9.9% FIMA was demonstrated. A low fuel failure fraction and R/B ratios indicated good performance and reliability of the studied TRISO fuel.

인천항 고철 하역 작업시 발생하는 비산분진 억제를 위한 계면활성제의 적용 및 기초 성능 평가 (The Application of Surfactants to the Suppression of Fugitive Dust Generated from the Scrap Metal Loading Field in Inchon Port and Preliminary Evaluation on Their Wetting Capability)

  • The objective of this study is to develop the water spraying which can effectively by applied to the control or suppression of the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon. As a first step toward this goal, we carried out some preliminary analyses on the chemical composition, physical shape, and particle size distribution of the sample dust. Next, to quantitatively investigate the effect of adding surfactants to the spraying water on the wettability of the sample dust, the Standard Sink Test was carried out for four different surfactants and at six different concentrations using the surfactants considered in this study. Results of from the preliminary analysis indicated that the main chemical component consisting of the sample dust is Goethite(FeO(OH)) and that the particles smaller than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter occupy about 36% of the sample dust in mass. This result implies that the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon should affect the environment nearby more than we have expected. This is because of relatively large mass percentage of the small metal particles less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter, what we may call respirable particles. As for the results of the Standard Sink Test, higher surfactant concentration tends to result in the higher wettability of the sample dust for the surfactants considered in this study, which in turn ensures the high particle collection efficiency of the droplets generated from the water spraying system. Based upon this preliminary results, studies to develop more sophisticated scaled model for dynamic test in underway and the effort to find the best surfactants as well as the optimum operating conditions are being made at the same time.
