This study was designed to observe the body growth and components of edible mugwort(Artemisia sp.) and medicinal mugwort(Kanghwa medicinal mugwort) . Twenty-four young rats of Sprague Dawley strain, body weight of about 89g were used in this study. They were fed on the basal diet(control diet) supplemented with 5% edible mugwort powder ( EM diet) and 5% medicinal mugwort powder( MM diet) for 4 weeks respectively. In proximate composition of nutrients of mugwort in dry basis(100g). crude protein (16.4g) and crude ash(11.8g) contents of EM were higher to about 2% than that of MM, but crude lipid content(4.3g) of EM was lower to about 2% than that of MM. However, the contents in calcium(6.9g) of MM was higher to 5.3 times than that of EM. but in Mn(17mg), Zn(0.5mg), Fe(131mg), Mg(337mg) of EM were higher to 2.8∼2.3 times and vitamin A(39,776 IU) of EM was higher to 2.9 times than that of MM respectively. Body wight gain rate and diet efficiency ratio of EM and MM diet group were similar to that of the control group. The contents of total protein, albumin, urea nitrogen. creatinine, uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, glucose, amylase, transaminase (GOT, GPT) in serum exhibited no remarkable difference among of the EM and MM diet group but the level of LDH activity of MM diet group were significantly lower than that of the control group and EM diet group.
This study was designed to observe the effects of edible mugwort and medicinal mugwort ( Ganghwa medicinal mugwort) on blood components of rats. Eighteen young rats of Sprague Dawley strain that weighted 84${\pm}$9g, were used in this study. They were fed on the basal diet(control diet). 5% edible mugwort powder(EM diet) and 5% medicinal mugwort(MM diet) for 4 weeks respectively. In proximate composition of mugworts, crude protein and crude ash contents of EM were 2% higher than those of MM. Mn, Zn and vitamin A contents of EM were 3 times higher than those of MM, but in Ca content, MM was 5 times higher than that of EM. The contents of albumin and the activity of ALT, AP amylase and CK in serum were significantly increased, but the activity of AST was significantly lowered in EM and MM diet groups. The contents of TG and the activity of LDH were towered in EM diet group and MM diet group resulted in decrease of glucose content and increase of TP content.
This study was aimed to screen edible herbs which control the composition of intestinal microflora. With in vitro experiments, we screened the water or ethanol extracts of about 60 edible herbs and wild plants in terms of the inhibition activity on the growth of the harmful Clostridium perfringens and growth promoting activity for the beneficial Bifidobacteria. The water extracts of mugwort and small water dropwort inhibited the growth of Cl.perfringens both in agar diffusion method and broth culture. On the other hand, the water extracts of petasites, mugwort, yellow day-lily and bitter cress have shown the promotion effect on the growth of Bifidobacterium longum. In the culture test using human feces as starter, the extracts of the above selected herbs increased the population of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus while they reduced the numbers of Cl.perfringens and E.coli.
On the mutagenicity induced by 3-amino-l,4-dimethyl-5-H-pyrido[4,3-b]indol (Trp-P-1) and 2-aminotluorene (2-AF), the antimutagenic effects of edible muntain herb juices were examined by the Ames assay using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. Juices prepared from aralia bud, small water dropwort, mugwort, roots of belltlower and sedum didn't have mutagenicity. Most of sample juices showed the antimutagenicity. Especially, juices prepared from aralia bud, small water dropwort and mugwort were found to possess strong antimutagenic effects. Sedum was moderatly effective and root of belltlower had little effect on mutagenicity caused by Trp-P1 and 2-AF. The experimental results with TA98 were similar to those with TA100 in the antimutagenicity test of edible mountain herb juices. In this study, antimutagenicity on Trp-P-1 was more effective than that on 2-AF.
The wormwood is one of the plants which occur widely throughout the world. Though the precise data on the entire chemical composition of mugwort leaves are not available, the major principles which have been found so far include inulin, alkaloid, thujon, sesquiterpene and several vitamins. Santonin, a parasiticide, is one of the glucosides extracted from the limited species of wormwood. It has long been known in herb medicine that the plants of this family has not only strong hemostatic, analgesic and parasiticidal actions but also therapeutic effects for diarrhea, stomachache and asthma. In recent pharmaceutical botany the wormwood is introduced to have antipyretic and astringent actions also. The mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) is the most common species of wormwood that occurs in Korea. The usage of this edible leaves of mugwort is rather various. It is used not only for wormwood bath but also as forage, moxa and medicinal agents. Recently Kim et al reported from their study on the effect of mugwort on the motility of isolated intestine of rabbits that tonus and motility were markedly enhanced by mugwort but this effect of mugwort on intestinal motility was almost completely blocked by atropine suggesting that activity of mugwort was exerted through its cholinergic effect. It was the findings of Kim et al that prompted the authors to do the present experiment. The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) juice on the respiration and blood pressure in cats. And also studied was the mechanism of depressor action of Artemisia asiatica Nakai Juice (AAJ). The results obtained are as follows; 1) It was observed that mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate were decreased markedly by AAJ. Following administration of 0.15 ml/kg and 0.3 ml/kg AAJ into cats the maximum depressor responses observed were $77.5{\pm}2.2\;mmHg$ and $94.0{\pm}3.7\;mmHg$ respectively. 2) Depressor responses to AAJ were blocked markedly by atropine whereas the responses were not affected by propranolol and dibenamine. Therefore it is strongly inferred that depressor action of AAJ results mainly from its cholinergic effect. This inference was further substantiated by the fact that heart rate change which invariably accompanies depressor responses to AAJ was almost completely abolished by atropinization. 3) After administration of AAJ into cats frequency of respiration was markedly increased while depth of respiration decreased during first 2-3 seconds.
The contents of total flavonoids, total antioxidant status and superoxide scavenger activity of edible plants were measured. Among twenty one samples of leafy vegetables and teas, mugwort (Artemesia capillaris) and green teas gave high total flavonoids contents, 48.2 mg/g sample and 44.7 mg/g sample, respectively. The highest concentration of total flavonoids among eighty nine samples analyzed was 52.1 mg/g sample from propolis. When samples were tested for total antioxidant status, a kind of groundsel showed the highest Total Antioxidant Status(TAS) value, 13.4 mM among leafy vegetables and teas and green tea gave high TAS value, 11.84 mM. On the other hand, purslane gave the lowest TAS value, 0.01 mM. The superoxide scavenge activity was measured from the extracts of all edible plants. The superoxide scavenge activity of polygonatum(81.1%) and chrysantemum (78.5%) were the highest among leafy vegetables, teas and medicinalplants. On the other hand, ginseng, poria, cassiae semen and dioscoreae rhizoma showed no superoxide scavenge activities.

Three separate feeding trials were performed to evaluate the dietary inclusion of pigments on growth and pigmentation of Semisulcospira coreana. In the first trial (Exp-1), snails (80 mg/snail) were fed diets containing green laver Enteromorpha intestinalis, seaweed fulvescens Capsosiphon fulvescens, chlorella Chlorella vulgaris, green tea, mugwort, kale, broccoli, sea tangle, dried laver Pyropia yezoensis, a synthetic edible dye, and a diet containing no pigment (control) for 12 weeks. Results showed that dietary treatments had no significant effects on growth performance. However, total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents of the snail's edible portion were markedly affected and the highest values were found in snails fed green laver. In the second (Exp-2) and third (Exp-3) experiments, the effect of green laver and chlorella were examined in diets for relatively smaller (35 mg/snail) and bigger (139 mg/snail) snails than those examined in the Exp-1, respectively. Feeding the bigger snails with chlorella significantly enhanced their growth rates compared to control group. Total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents of the edible portions of snails were significantly increased by dietary chlorella supplementation. These findings suggest that dietary green laver or chlorella could improve the pigmentation of S. coreana without any adverse effects on growth.
This survey investigated on the degree of acknowledgment, intake frequency and using methods of wild grasses of the residents in Kyeonggi, Kangwon, Chunnam, Chungbook, Kyeongnam & Cheju area. The results were as follows: 1. An answer that impression of wild grasses is 'nature food' was the highest(42.6%). It was founded that interest of nature food has been increasing. 2. It has been shown that the most common method for elimination of astringent taste is to blanch and then wash several times with water.(62.9%) 3. The most common obtaining routes was traditional market. It has been shown that rate of gathering in the fields is higher in rural community and the group of over 60 years old than that of urban community and the other groups. 4. In rural area, people(28.7%) ate wild grasses more frequently than in urban area. Family with the old and the group of over 40 years old eat wild grass often. 5. More than 95% of answerers were familiar with the names of wild grasses, codonopsis lanceolata, chinese bellflower, braken, mugwort, wild rocambole and edible shoots of a fatsia & Korean lettuce are known to them with over 88.6%, 85.1% respectively. Frequently eaten wild grasses were braken, chinese bellflower, wild tocambole, codonopsis lanceolata, mugwort and korean lettuce orderly. But in Chunnam & Kyeongnam, they were braken, chinese bellflower, mugwort, wild rocambole and Korean lettuce orderly. 6. Wild grasses eaten with rice were total 25 species, and mugwort had the highest usage rate with 41.9%. Mugwort was used for $D'{\breve{o}}k$(rice cake)(77.8%), T'wigim $J{\breve{o}}n$(deep fat fried dish swallow fat fried dish)(50.1%) and liquor(4.6%). In the cooking of Guk(soup), Chigae(stew), Sengch'ae(raw vegetable) and kinds of wild grasses for Namul(cooked seasonal vegetable) & Bokkum(saute) are the most various with 58 species, especially braken was most commonly used for saute. Sedum & Korean lettuce were the common ingredients of Kimch and codonopsis lanceolata was used in liquer & Jangachis(pickle) with 40%, 46% each. Chinese bellflower was used with the most variable cooking method. 7. 43 species of wild grasses were stored by blanching and drying, and braken had the highest rate(32.3%) then aster scaber, flowering fern, Pimpinella brachycarpa, mugwort and ligularia orderly.

In order to search for blood anticoagulant substance from herbal extracts, we extracted with cold water (Fr. I), methanol (Fr. II) and hot water (Fr. III) from 93 commercially available herbs. The anticoagulant activity of herbal extracts was examined through the intrinsic pathway by activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), the extriansic pathway by prothrombin time (PT) and the common pathway by thrombin time (TT). Onion, garlic, clove, fenugreek, mugwort, thyme and sage had on anticoagulant activity with intrinsic pathway and mint, italian seasoning, rosemary, turmeric, tarragon and wasabie had on anticoagulant activity with common pathway. Nobody had on anticogulant activity with extrinsic pathway. Among commerical herbs tested, clove cultivated in holland was selected because it showed the most potent anticoagulant activity among the samples investigated.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effects of commonly consumed vegetables in Korea on lipid accumulation and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines related to obesity/metabolic syndrome. Using KNHANES (Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) raw data ($1^{st}$; 1998, $5^{th}$; 2010, 2011) and a literature search, we selected vegetables for study. Edible portions of samples were prepared, ethanol-extracted, and then freeze-dried. 3T3-L1 adipocytes and HepG2 hepatocytes cells were used as in vitro models. Lipid accumulation determined by Oil-red O staining showed that all samples except bracken had inhibitory effects on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Especially, crown daisy and mugwort effectively reduced accumulation of lipids, and their inhibition rates were more than 60% of the control group. Young pumpkin, leeks, crown daisy, and mugwort showed significantly decreased MCP-1 levels compared to the control group. However, adiponectin protein level did not increase in the vegetables experimental group. In HepG2 hepatocytes, all samples showed inhibitory effects on lipid accumulation at one of the two concentrations. Although adiponectin protein levels did not increase, MCP-1 protein levels decreased in adipocytes. Further, lipid accumulation in adipocytes and hepatocytes decreased. In conclusion, all samples showed one or more improved obesity/metabolic syndrome indicators. Among them, young pumpkin, leeks, crown daisy, and mugwort were selected as the most effective portions of vegetables based on improvement of obesity/metabolic syndrome-related indicators.
